(source: Koreatimes 4/25/07) Top Movie Star Cho In-sung Dropped From University By Chung Ah-young Staff Reporter ![]() Actor Cho In-sung Top actor Cho In-sung has been expelled from Dongguk University as he failed to meet the school's attendance requirements. The university said that the 26-year-old actor was asked not to return to the Department of Theater, which has strict regulations controlling student behavior, as he skipped many classes last semester. Cho originally went to Chunnam Techno College in South Cholla Province and later entered Dongguk University in 2003 to further his study of performing arts. However, after moving to the university, Cho didn't have much time to attend classes from 2005 as he started acting in the film, "A Dirty Carnival," which was released last year. Sidus HQ, Cho's management agency, said that he tried to balance both his acting career and studies, but failed to do so because of his tight schedule. The agency said that he is considering resuming his studies through seeking reentrance, while continuing his work. After his setback at the school, Cho will likely have his military service. He deferred his duty while attending the school, but now has no excuse to delay serving the duty since his expulsion from the school. His agency said that Cho will fulfill his military duty although he has not been called up yet. Cho's popularity began with the drama "Piano" in which he played a minor role under SBS, co-starring Ko Soo, which was aired in 2001. In 2004, he enjoyed the peak of his popularity with a TV drama again, titled "What happened in Bali," playing opposite actress Ha Ji-won. He starred in major films such as "Madeleine" (2002), "Love of South and North" ( 2003), "The Classic" ( 2002) and "A Dirty Carnival." ( 2006) ================================= |

(source: koreatimes 5/30/07) '200 Pounds Beauty' Charms Overseas Film Fans By Lee Hyo-won Staff Reporter Korean made movie "200 Pounds Beauty" is taking audiences by storm abroad _ smashing box office records across Singapore and Hong Kong and signaling actress Kim A-jung’s rise as a hot new hallyu star. Three weeks after its opening last month in Singapore, "Beauty" had already grossed a whopping $550,000 in that country alone according to a release by local distributors InnoForm Media and Shaw Organization. The film opened on April 19 and now exceeds figures of previous Korean record-holder "The Wishing Stairs" (2003) and last year’s hit "The Host," which drew $550,000. The film’s producer KM Pictures refused to release exact numbers. "We bought the film at the AFM (American Film Market) last year and were surprised when our distribution partner Shaw suggested that we take it as wide as 18 prints," InnoForm general manager Lim Teck was quoted as telling "Variety." "We enjoyed a clear run without much competition in the two weeks before 'Spider-Man 3,' and it has proved a really smart piece of counterprogramming," said Lim. "Like all Korean films, it has very good production values, but this is a romantic comedy that has good songs and a theme of beauty and dieting that works well with female audiences," he said. The romantic comedy features Kim A-jung as a gifted yet obese singer who, after going under the knife, transforms into a slim beauty. Only then can she pursue her musical career and the love of her life. The allure of "Beauty" does not stop in Singapore. After opening on May 17 across 21 screens in Hong Kong, the sassy film came in second at the box office __ tailing just behind "Spider-Man 3." "Beauty" scored $190,000 in under four days. With the recent release of "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End," the film maintains a strong ranking in third place. "Kim A-jung is the reason to watch this film," wrote a movie critic in "BC Magazine," a Hong Kong and Singapore-based magazine. "Not only does she look great, but does all of the singing on her own and displays a nice instinct for comedy." The local Chinese media have also noted Kim as eclipsing the fame of Jun Ji-hyun, the heroine of "My Sassy Girl" (2001). The romantic comedy enjoyed enormous popularity in Hong Kong when released several years ago. "Beauty" was a huge hit in Korea when released last December. Attracting 6.62 million viewers, the movie ranks eighth in the all-time Korean box office and first in the admissions record of comedy films. The upcoming 2007 Daejong (Grand Bell) Film Festival officially announced "Beauty" as the most nominated film. It is set to compete in 12 of the festival’s 19 categories, including Best Film, Best Director and Best Actress. This exceeds the 11 nominations for "The Host" at last year’s festival. Meanwhile, Kim is in Vietnam to promote Korean film and will participate in the 2007 Dynamic Korea Film Festival, to take place May 31-June 3 in Hanoi. "Beauty" will be screened along with five other works including Park Chan-wook’s award-winning "Old Boy." ----- (source: BROasia 6/6/07) The movie '200 Pounds Beauty' will be made into a musical production. ![]() The production company Shownote revealed on the 5th that they will be creating a musical version of the movie with the movie production company KM Culture. The movie '200 Pounds Beauty' which gathered more than 6.62 million to the theatres late last year is a romantic comedy that brought Kim Ah Joong to stardom. The musical production comes amidst a recent boom of 'movicals,' movies revised to musical format productions, and as a result of early interest of the musical potential of the movie. Shownote commented, "Songs such as 'Maria,' 'Byul(Star),' and others will be used in the musical as well along with a few other new pieces. The production will be placed in a theatre with approximately 1,000 seats late next year." ================================= |

================================= Kim Jonghak Production, apologized for delay on airing of 'TWSSG' [Yonhap News]6/8/07 10:43 MBC labor union, announcement to urge to press responsibility for delaying broadcasting Kim Jonghak Production express their stance of apology about delaying of airing 'Tae Wang Sa Shin Gi' (script by Song Jina, Directed by Kim Jonghak). The Kim Jonghak Production told on 8 that they are regretable and feel very much sorry as they could not keep promise with TV viewers including they could not meet production schedule on time on the date of promised airing date. Kim Jonghak PD, producing director in charge, told, "We caused trouble of not showing the drama to TV viewers on the scheduled broadcastiing date and postponing its airing time, and to the broadcasting station also, I deeply apologize for creating many problems because we could not meet the scheduled production cut off date." The production company told that about 65% of filming of the 'TWSSG', which was scheduled to be aired on 25, has progressed, and filming of 17 among 24 episodes has been partially completed at present. They say, as Director Kim decided to stop the filming in the midst of its progression and begin touch-up work on script with writer Song, to show a drama with further more degree of completion and more wonderful drama, filming team evacuated from Jeju Island location in the past early May, and Director Kim and writer Song are progressing touch up work on the scrpit. While touching up on the script is going on, the production team is progressing post-production work on the parts which have been shot. The explanation by the production company is that, starring actors Bae Yongjoon, Moon Sori, & Lee Jia, etc. who have been enveloped in rumors including rumor of conflict with the production company, all the while, are faithfully participating in the post-production work including recording after filming, poster shooting , etc. from early May until now. The production told that they plan to resume shooting around middle of this month in the Jeju Island location as much as director and writer have agreed ib tge direction of the script with an aim to make drama with degree of completion. On the other hand, prior to this in the afternoon on 7, MBC labor union made announcement titled, 'We are asking responsibility of the company regarding repeated delays in broadcasting schedule of the 'TWSSG' ', and criticized that the broadcasting is continuoously delayed as the station(MBC) is pulled around by the outside production company. The announcement urged, "We ask company to strictly discipline associated people in charge, who brought on current situation by giving up company image that has higher value than the competetive ability, and to clearly tell definite schedule on broadcasing from now on." http://news.chosun.com/site/data/htm...060800357.html Copyright (c) Yonhap News Agency ================================= |

A press conference was held at Seoul Imperial Palace Hotel on the 8th.
(copied/pasted from BYJ's Quilt) ================================= TWSSG will be ready to broadcast in September, KJH says. Yonhap News, Seoul Reporter: Kook Ki Heon Director Kim Jong Hak said that he will make TWSSG available till early September at a press meeting held on June 8th. Kim said, "We found our way. We changed the plot and are working on the scenario. The shooting will start in mid-June, and TWSSG will be ready to broadcast by early September." He also said, "I've never done such a difficult and hard project." He also admitted that there were some mistake in the process of combining fantasy and history. Following is the Q&A of the press meeting. Q: Why is it getting so late? A: It would have been already finished if the drama was only about a historical figure. I expected it to be hard, but didn't know it would be this hard. There was a mistake in combining fantasy and history. While I tried to catch the life of King Kwang-gaeto, I lost the aspect of fantasy. I put too many things in the story, and it didn't work well. I could keep making the drama like that by mixing history and fantasy, but I felt as if I was struck on my head when I thought of what our initial goal was. Bae Yong Joon said that this drama was the last pride of Hallyu, and if this drama fails, it doesn't only mean the failure of Yong Joon and me, but it could mean the failure of Hallyu. He also said that we should show the viewers a well-made drama no matter how much it will take, even working without sleeping for days. I agreed with him. I am not desiring more, I am just thinking of our initial aspiration. Q: Can you give us the accurate date that will be broadcasted? A: I made a contract with NHK, but the date is not settled. I cannot give you the date. We are working on the new scenario, and aiming at a new goal. As we made a decision on which way to go, we will re-start shooting in mid-June. TWSSG will be prepared to broadcast by early September. Please wait for the drama. You will understand once you see it. Q: Will it be broadcasted abroad before it is broadcasted in Korea? A: Basically, it should be broadcasted in Korea first. In reality, subtitle must be prepared, and most of all, I think domestic broadcasting is the norm that we should keep. Q: Where did you spend most of the production cost? A: Many of the part went to the studio set. You will know once you see the drama. Q: Are you planning to show us the computer graphics before the broadcast? A: No, I don't have such plan. Please wait and see. The scenes are not shocking, but it is confidential. The CG of the scene that was taken in March was finished several days ago. Some CG scene need six to twelve months to make. We are not good at waiting. I also thought that it could be made earlier if I press the CG team, but I was wrong. Q: Why did the shooting stop? A: It is not only because of CG. It is a combination of scenario, art, and so on. I agonized on why should we revive King Kwang-gaeto in 21st century, and decided to check things out rather than to go easy. Q: How is the teamwork? A: We often exchange informations. The actors have other schedules, but basically they are proud of this drama. They often sacrifice for this drama. We are trying together to make good result. Q: Did you read the statement of the labor union of MBC? A: Yes, I did. I have nothing to reply. I am sorry for the delay, and will try to solve things out. Q: Is there any preview of the drama? A: Yes, there is. I will give the first four part before June 14th. Please wait till the drama is finished. ================================= KJH, realign the plot of TWSSG after hearing BYJ's advice Source: Hankooki.com Reporter: Kim Sung Hanwing@sportshankook.co.kr Director Kim JH said that he stopped shooting the drama after hearing BYJ's advice. On 8th at 2 o'clock, Director Kim had a press meeting at Seoul Imperial Palace Hotel. He apologized for the delay, and started his word with "I realized something while I talked with BYJ." "BYJ asked me, 'who is King Kwang-gaeto? Why is he so outstanding among thousands of kings in our history? How could he rule such a large territory?'" "BYJ also said, 'if this drama goes like this, it would be a failure to both of us. I don't care about the failure of myself, but it could be a major failure of Hallyu. I think Hallyu should not stop like this.'" Kim said that he felt as if he was struck on his head when BYJ advised, and fully agreed with BYJ. He eventually decided to stop shooting and rewrite the scenario, and the broadcast was postponed inevitably. Kim said, "I reconsidered on how should I combine history and fantasy. Maybe I tried to show too much. I will make TWSSG available by early September, and do my best to make good-quality drama." The press meeting was so heated as if it were a Congressional hearing. Kim apologized to the viewers repeatedly. Among 24 parts of TWSSG, shooting of 16 parts are finished. The new scenario is under work from May, and shooting will restart from mid-June. http://sports.hankooki.com/lpage/ent...9284158390.htm ================================= Kim said, "BYJ was an acter from the beginning to the end" Source : Newsen.com Reporter: Ko Hong Ju Director Kim JH officially expressed his position about the delay of TWSSG. At a press meeting held at Imperial Palace Hotel at 2pm on 8th, director KJH started the interview with his apology. "I think my ambition was too big. I apologize for not keeping the promise with the viewers. I was so greedy about the drama that I wanted a better story, to make a mistake." On a question asking whether the delay was because of BYJ, Kim answered "I definitely don't agree with that point." Kim also said, "BYJ was an actor throughout the project. He is a very well organized person, and showed such a sincere effort to act his character that people were moved." "He never worked in means of business, nor to make up his image as a Hallyu star. I am also the head of KJH Production, but we never talked about profit." "It is true that BYJ feels pressure by the fact that he is representing Hallyu, which seems to be fading." About the delay, Kim said, "In May, the TWSSG staffs decided to suspend the shooting schedule. It was inevitable to rewrite the scenario. There was some mistake in combining the fantasy and history." Kim continued, "BYJ once asked me, 'what kind of person King Kwang-gaeto really was?' I couldn't answer. I was losing the focus I aimed when I started this project. If we don't enjoy making the drama, viewers won't enjoy it either. Even if it was very late, I decided to rearrange the schedule." "Shooting of new scenes are stopped, but the afterward process of previous scenes are under work as scheduled. BYJ and other actors are faithfully cooperating. Every staffs are doing their best. I am sorry to disappoint you by not keeping the schedule." Kim apologized repeatedly. ================================= |

(source: Chosun 6/8/07) The Top Korean Movies by Box Office Takings As big Hollywood blockbusters start flooding our screens this summer, with every one claiming some box office record or other, the Chosun Ilbo for the first time rates the ticket sales of Korean movies, as opposed to audience numbers. The numbers come from movie distributors like CJ Entertainment, Showbox and Cinema Service, and the results are sometimes surprising. When we rated the top 10 according to box office takings, the first to fifth were all overturned (chart 1). Thus “The Host” by Bong Joon-ho, which was seen by 13.02 million people, only comes second with a total income of W79.1 billion (US$1=938). Instead, “The King and the Clown” by Lee Joon-ik, which was seen by 12.3 million people, came first with a total income of W80.5 billion. “Taegukgi: The Brotherhood of War” by Kang Je-gyu, which was rated third according to audience numbers, dropped to fourth with a total income of W72.4 billion. And “Silmido” by Kang Woo-suk, which was fourth, rises one notch with a total income of W73.6 billion. ![]() This is the first time movies have been rated according to ticket income. Until now movie distributors have hesitated to release box office data for reasons of confidentiality. There have always been requests in Chungmuro to rate the top 10 movies according to income. People pointed out that audience numbers include too many discounts and free admissions. Movie investor Park Hyun-tae of Sovik Venture Capital said, "Frankly, what is it worth if 10 million people see the movie with free tickets? We should rate movies according to income instead of audience numbers." There were indications that movie audiences were inflated when “The Host” and “The King and the Clown” were playing last year, and three years ago when “Taegukgi” and “Silmido” were on. Some argued that there are too many discounts at the end of screenings to boost audience figures. Of course, movie distributors may disagree. Showbox, which distributed “The Host”, says unlike “The King and the Clown”, which was rated 18, “The Host” was rated 12. It seems that the show income decreased a little because of discounts for students and matinee prices youngsters often use. “Friend” (2001) by Kwak Kyung-taek, which was fifth by audience, was rated seventh according to theatre income. Yang Jung-Gyeong, Jininsa Film said “Friend” drew huge audiences. “But provincial ticket prices are about W1,000 cheaper than in Seoul, so maybe the rate of local audiences were higher." “Swiri” (1999) by Kang Je-gyu came ninth according to audience figures but was not in the top 10 for box office takings. The reason? Ticket prices increased to W7,000 in December 2000. When “Swiri” opened in 1999, they were still W6,000. ================================= |

(source: Joonang 6/8/07) [TV Review]If you swim with sharks don’t wear bait June 06, 2007 ![]() “War of Money,” a TV drama with an honest view of money. [SBS-TV] It’s been two years since I moved into my own place and I have slowly learned to stay away from the seduction of two-for-the-price of-one broccoli in the supermarket. It’s still hard to resist a surprise sale, but it’s better to buy just one broccoli than have to watch the free one decomposing in the refrigerator. However, my big Friday ritual is still to scrutinize the cut-price fliers from the big supermarkets. Sometimes I feel penny wise and pound foolish when I find myself hailing a taxi for a 3,000-won ($3) ride with my hands full of products that came with the same amount in discounts. If I succeed in resisting the taxi, I have to fight to keep my balance on a speeding bus with both hands full of plastic bags. It is an addictive kind of fun to hunt for the best price while dreaming of being a millionaire in 10 years time. Dreaming of “being” a millionaire rather than “marrying” one (although it wouldn’t hurt to do both) seems to be an honest way to remain frugal, until my Lotto ticket hits the jackpot. I am not the only one who has a love affair with money, as proved by the large audience now watching the new TV series “War of Money” on SBS-TV. After debuting in late May, the show, airing Wednesday and Thursday night at 10, has achieved an audience rating of 30 percent and is outranking its competitors. One mission statement of the series is “Watch this drama, and you’ll be rich.” How tempting for plebeian TV viewer like me. However, the mission statement is a bit of an exaggeration. The show is tale of a stock analyst, Geum Na-ra, who decides to become a loan shark when his father commits suicide after he was threatened by loan sharks. Geum (whose name is a Korean pun for “land of gold and money”) once had everything, but his life collapses after his father’s demise and his mother’s subsequent death from shock. Geum finds himself homeless and hungry. He then decides to take revenge by making so much money that he has cash to burn. Turning into a cold-blooded fellow, he tracks down a legendary loan shark and begs to be his pupil, learning the skills he needs for revenge along the way. Park Shin-yang, who plays Geum, is the jewel of the drama. Meanwhile, the other axis of the story is Seo Ju-hee, a bank clerk whose father also suffers at the hands of loan sharks. Remaining faithful to her motto “Men leave scars, but money leaves interest,” she decides to marry for money, but Geum suddenly appears and blocks the marriage. And, true to TV cliche, love is soon in the air. Not surprisingly, there are other factors that complicate the couple’s relationship. Based on a Korean comic, the drama can seem trite, and it does not make sense that the heartless Geum so easily softens for Seo. Yet, as the show’s ratings prove, the series has the power to draw an audience ― and it appears to be the power of money. The drama actually offers an honest look at the true meaning of money, instead of romanticizing the subject, and the public is responding with enthusiasm. As a bonus, it also offers a number of good sayings regarding money such as “Money, not the pen, is mightier than sword.” It is somehow sad to imagine 30 percent of the TV sets around the country tuned into this drama while all the viewers burn with a desire to get rich. After all, the world is an unfair place, and money is the heart of the problem. Currently, one of the most popular TV commercials is from a private loan business that lures viewers with the offer of “no interest for two weeks.” It’s scary to think what happens after the grace period expires, yet that’s the reality of the private loan business, which is apparently booming in this world where money rules. In the meantime, I will continue my hunt for affordable groceries, while listening to ABBA’s “Money, Money, Money” and watching “War of Money.” By Chun Su jin ================================= |

Toho Cinemas Roppongi Hills started to show "Hotelier" on the screen every Thursday since April 12th. This was planned alongside the broadcasting of the Japanese remake of "Hotelier" on Asahi TV, and will be showing on the screen for ten weeks. According to the recent Nippon Sports news, on May 17th, it had a record number of sold-out showings, so it broke the box-office record for "Spiderman 3" on that same day. I've recently started on Air City featuring the lovely Choi Ji Woo and Lee Jung Jae. A great series so far. Very fast paced and definitely keeps me going without wanting to skip any parts. I like how it is not focused solely on relationships but rather everything that goes on at the airport. I recommend the series to those who have not started watching the series. A interesting spin from the typical korean series. :)

(source: tour2korea) Update on Drama ‘Gung’ Stars Ju Ji-Hun and Yun Eun-Hye ![]() Ju Ji-Hun, after recently finishing the drama ‘Devil’, has gone home to take a rest. A representative of Ju Ji-Hun stated, “Although Ju Ji-Hun is not a particularly an easily exhausted person, his role in ‘Devil’ was one that required an enormous amount of concentration and effort that seems to have effected him quite a bit”, he continued, “He is not hurt or sick. He just needs some rest.” On the evening of May 27, Ju Ji-Hun attended the KBS 2TV ‘Devil’ after-party with the fans, at Seoul’s Coex Auditorium, where he was seen to be somewhat exhausted. On the 24th of last month, the KBS drama, ‘Devil’, ended at episode 20. ‘Devil’ incorporated a solid storyline different from the common Korean drama and received great support from diehard fans.
