Default Park Shin Yang Chose To Act For The Name Of "Geum Na Ra"

Park Shin Yang Chose To Act For The Name Of "Geum Na Ra"

He plays the role of a private moneylender in SBS drama "War Of Money," and said "it is interesting since it is a role that I have never played before in a drama."

"I personally have never gone to a private moneylender, but many of the people I know have done so. I thought that it was a very interesting topic, and I have never encountered such a story, so that attracted me to it."

Actor Park Shin Yang, who gained tremendous popularity after the 2004 drama, "Lovers in Paris," have returned to the screen after three years in the SBS drama "War of Money," which will air on Wednesdays, and Thursdays. He played a cool second generation millionaire in "Lovers in Paris," and in "War of Money," he will play a private moneylender who reaches rock bottom after having no money.

At the "War of Money" press release held in the SBS building in Seoul, Park Shin Yang said that he liked the character's name of 'Geum Na Ra' so he decided to take the role.

He explains about "War of Money" in reference to the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize winner, Muhammad Yunus, a Bangladesh bank owner. Yunus ran the Grameen Bank, who lent money to poor women, and received recognition for empowering women's rights.

The role of Geum Na Ra shows an elite who graduated from the Ivy League, but after his father*s debts ruin the family, he becomes penniless in a day. While being even homeless, he is determined to make money, so he goes down the path into becoming a private moneylender.

Park Shin Yang is becoming a media interest since he is accompanied by many talented staff members, such as an acting director who helps him with his rehearsals.

"I have been together with my acting director for five years now, and in order to create a character and be captivating on screen, I need to maintain a cold look. Just like how a golfer has a coach by his or her side, my acting director watches over me and checks that my mannerisms are not lacking anything. And I also get advise for when I work in an ensemble with other actors. It is only in our country that does not have acting directors, but in other countries, many actors are known to have them.

He also said that he feels that there is a need for him to adjust his health condition when he is acting. After doing a drama that takes about 3 months, he feels that he needs about a three years' worth of a break. So he explained that in order to get it done right, he needed a rehearsal partner, which he feels is a must.

Lee Jung Jae, "Back to back role of an agent is a burden"

Lee Jeong Jae is returning to the TV screen after a long break through the MBC series 'Air City.'

At the production press conference held at the Incheon International Airport held on the 29th, Lee Jung Jae was first asked how he felt about it.

"It is burdensome thinking that it is my first time appearing in a television series in eight years, but these days I have been telling myself to not overdo it. I was trying so hard that in the end, I eliminated the range of characters I could act. I felt as if I limited myself so this time I will try to escape from the burden while I enjoy it."

The role he is playing this time is a National Intelligence Service agent Kim Ji Sung who returns from working abroad after a friend's death and encounters various incidents while working at the airport.

One cannot disregard the burden from his previous agent role in 'Typhoon' as they are similar.

"At first it was burdensome as the character was another agent. If it was a character that made you think, 'What kind of agent is that?' then it would have been alright, but it overlaps greatly with the character I played in 'Typhoon.' But I heard not many people watched 'Typhoon' so I was discouraged but found hope at the same time."

The drama is special as it is the first to be set at the airport, but there also seems to be much difficulty according to the director. He did say it takes two to three times the more effort.

"The traveling distance is much greater as the airport is big. Because we can't shut down the entire airport to film, there are many cases where the filming is disrupted by camera flashes of people watching or airport announcements. But it is interesting actually being able to be on the runway, in the underground bunkers, or in the control top. Also, the airport is a place of greeting and farewell simultaneously so I believe it is a place with living emotion."

With various professional dramas becoming popular, 'Air City' also focuses on the professionalism of those who work at the airport. The story will shift its focus to love later on, but the main plot is about the incidents that happen at the airport.

"I think viewers now prefer a good plot over visuals. Before, dramas became popular based on how good it looked, but now people will turn away from great visuals if the story is not up to par. There is great burden as I must be able to act as good as the large scale scenery of the airport."

Hallyu Star Choi Ji Woo will be co-starring Lee Jung Jae as Han Do Gyung, an operations manager of the airport. The drama has gathered the spotlight as it is the first time the two are performing together.

"I simply plan on benefiting from Choi Ji Woo. Rather than wanting to become a Hallyu Star, I have a great desire to show good acting."

'Air City' which commemorates the sixth year anniversary of the opening of Incheon International Airport will start airing on May 19th.

Lee Jin Wook, "Currently developing an active personality"

Lee Jin Wook, "Currently developing an active personality"

He co-starred Son Ye Jin, Kim Hee Seon, Bae Doo Na, and now Choi Ji Woo, with four being in less than a year. Actor Lee Jin Wook is lucky in that sense.

At the press conference of 'Air City,' Lee Jin Wook who will be playing Kang Ha Joon was first asked the question about this 'luck' of his.

"Everyone is jealous of me. When I say I will be appearing in a new series, everyone first asks who the main cast is rather than what role I am playing. Choi Ji Woo is extremely nice and caring."

Lee Jin Wook who says he personally likes to spend time alone will be acting as a character that cannot keep to himself and goes around the entire airport taking care of things. As it is not his usual personality, he needs to practice a lot.

"I am not the type that gets lonely. I enjoy being alone. The character is rather different from my own so I am currently trying to develop an active personality. I think the new personality will also be good and people find it easy going."

Because of the setting at an airport, there must be difficulties, and even more so because of his character.

"The areas we are filming at are restricted so we have to stick together. When filming on the runway, the equipment is expensive so we must all be extra careful. But the security is extremely tight. Even though we go there often and they know our faces, they still check our bags each time."

He also discovered parts of the airport other than the terminals and where they check baggage.

"I was surprised to hear 30,000 people work at the airport. It is a very complicated and sensitive place. I used to get frustrated when the processing took a long time when traveling, but no I can understand the workers more. I am thankful to all of those working at the airport now."

'Air City' also starring Lee Jung Jae and Choi Ji Woo will start airing on May 19th.

Cha Tae Hyun, returns to TV through drama series in three years

Cha Tae Hyun will be starring in the new drama series that is to be aired in May through KBS titled, 'I Came in Search of a Flower (tentative).'

This is the first in approximately three years after the 'Prince's First Love' which completed its broadcast in August of 2004 on MBC. His last KBS appearance was through 'Star' ten years ago.

'I Came in Search of a flower (tentative)' which will be aired following 'Hello, Miss,' is about finding the true meaning behind love and death. Producer Ji Young Soo of 'Oh! Pil Seung, Bong Soon Young' will be joined by writer Yoon Sung Hee of 'Shooting for the Stars' for the series.

Cha Tae Hyun will be playing Yoon Ho Sang, a comical undertaker. He has a nice personality and looks but seems to end up with luck in whatever he attempts and believes all of it is because of money.

Cha Tae Hyun commented, "I am very concerned as I haven't appeared on television in a while, but I am looking forward to this piece. I will try my best to present a lively character the viewers can get into."

Default Epic Drama Boom to Continue This Year
=====================================
Epic Drama Boom to Continue This Year

By Chung Ah-young
Staff Reporter

The boom in Korean epic dramas that captured viewers’ hearts last year is not likely to let up.

Major broadcasters have casted big-name stars, including hallyu star Bae Yong-joon, known in Japan as Yonsama, Kim Hee-sun and film actress Moon So-ri.

The new epic dramas explore more diverse themes than in the past and are set in a variety of eras, ranging from Kojoson (2333 B.C. - 108 B.C.) to the Koguryo Kingdom (37 B.C. - A.D. 668) and the Choson Kingdom (1392-1910).

KBS is expected to air its flagship epic drama, "Sejong the Great," in July. The story is written by Yoon Son-joo, who also wrote "Hwang Jin-i," the recent hit epic drama about "kisaeng," courtesans often likened to Japanese geisha.

The drama will shed new light on King Sejong, who devised the Korean writing system, hangul, and ruled Choson from 1418 to1450 as its fourth king.

The drama will portray the king as a man who struggles, through self-reflection and soul-searching, to become a leader, rather than the born-to-be sage figure portrayed in history textbooks.

"Sejong put more emphasis on science and culture than political power struggles. We’ll show the agonies of Sejong, who struggled to make a powerful and proud kingdom by developing science and culture," said Kim Hyun-jun, a senior official at the KBS drama bureau.

Kim said that the drama might help viewers think about what makes a good leader ahead of the presidential election later this year.

"Taewangsasingi" (The Four Guardian Gods of the King), expected to air on MBC in May <delayed to end of June>, has already attracted attention for its co-stars, Bae Yong-joon and Moon So-ri.

The fantasy epic drama revolves around the life of King Kwanggaeto, the 19th king of the Koguryo Kingdom.

The drama is expected to air on Japanese broadcaster NHK because of Yonsama’s strong fan base in Japan.

Also, epic drama veteran producer Lee Byung-hun, who produced "Taejanggum" (Jewel in the Palace) and "Huh Joon," will come back to MBC with the new epic "Lee San-chongjo, the Great."

The 50-episode soap opera to be aired in September will focus on the life of the Choson Kingdom’s 22nd king, Chongjo (1777-1800), who contributed to the kingdom’s renaissance.

The title includes his real name, Lee San, and the drama will portray his childhood. Lee said the drama would also emphasize the king’s political, economic and social achievements.

"I was strongly motivated by his engagement policy, tangpyongchaek," Lee said. The policy was intended to give people equal footing in politics.

King Chongjo was the eldest son of Crown Prince Sado, who was locked in a chest and killed by King Yongjo, his father, during factional struggles.

SBS plans to launch a new 100-episode epic drama called "Tangun," set in the Kojoson era, later this year.

Tangun is the country’s mythological founding father. He reportedly became king in 2333 B.C.

The drama is the first to deal the first Korean kingdom and Korea’s mythological founder.

MBC’s new drama, "Haeohwa," starring actress Kim Hee-sun and singer-turned-actress Park Ji-yoon, is expected to ride the popularity of kisaeng-themed dramas.

The drama tells the story of four women from childhood to becoming top kisaeng.

He was picked by the director after competing with 20 Asian actors including top stars in Asia. Rain met with the Wachowski bothers at Berlin in April. Default TV Producers Vow to Curb Exorbitant Fees for Stars

TV Producers Vow to Curb Exorbitant Fees for Stars

TV production companies are joining hands to curb spiraling fees for acting stars, which they say take up the lion’s share of production costs and damage overall quality and competitiveness. Altogether 31 production companies including KimJongHak Production, Olive Nice, Logos Film and PAN Entertainment that form the Corea Drama Production Association in a board meeting last Friday decided to improve conditions for drama production.

A Japanese cover for a preview DVD of the drama ‘Taewangsashingi.’

An association spokesman on Monday said drama production companies get W80 million to W100 million from networks per episode of a series with 16-24 installments. Of that, an average of W50 million is spent on the stars. The fees for popular writers are between W10-30 million. He said this works to the detriment of overall production quality and supporting players and crew, who number between 80-100 per episode. It also makes it hard for production companies to turn a profit, he added.

Thus if an A-list star gets W25 million per show, another will calculate his fees at a certain percentage above that. The fees for popular writers are also skyrocketing.

Korean Wave superstar Bae Yong-joon was paid W50 million per episode of “Taewangsashingi”' which deals with the history of the Koguryo Kingdom from its founding to the achievements of the King Kwanggaeto the Great. Other big stars like Goh Hyun-jeong get W25 million. The spokesman said this was the reason for the excessive product placements that disrupt the shows and in addition encourage under-the-table dealings.

“The situation is so bad that there is little thought for outstanding supporting players and experienced crew,” he said. “But the high fees for the stars increase the cost of Korean dramas, and that damages exports.”

The association will seek measures to adjust star fees and discuss the matter with the Korean Broadcasters Association as well as others in the movie industry.

INTERVIEW
HOME > SOCIETY & CULTURE > INTERVIEW

Producer Yun Seok-ho, the creator of Yonsama and the “hallyu” frenzy

South Korean TV drama “Winter Sonata” has probably become the most talked-about drama to date. It has created quite a stir in the entire Asian region, especially Japan, by depicting the innocent love between a young man and woman against the picturesque backdrop of snowy white scenery.

Standing behind the skyrocketing popularity of “Yonsama,” or Bae Yong-jun, recognized as a top actor even by Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, is KBS drama producer Yun Seok-ho. Starting with “Autumn Fairy Tale,” he is close to completing a series of dramas on the four seasons, having produced “Winter Sonata” and “The Scent of Summer,” and planning to produce “Spring Waltz” in the near future. His stubborn insistence on portraying pure-hearted love in his dramas has earned him the nickname “The Peter Pan of Romance.” We interviewed Yun to find out why his drama-producing philosophy has created such a stir in Asia, even though he is often criticized for avoiding reality by depicting idealistic love. We also asked what his wishes for the New Year are.

Q1 You have been very busy in Korea and Japan recently since you won the “Korea-Japan Friendship Award” from the Kinema Junbo Awards, which is the Japanese equivalent of the Academy Award. I was told that your popularity in Japan is comparable to the popularity of Yonsama himself. Did you know that?

I received a special award on December 30 from the Kinema Junbo Awards, a Japanese movie magazine, which marked its 85th anniversary last year. To tell the truth, I did not know how famous I was. It was like Byron once said, “I woke up one day to find myself very famous.” I did not realize how famous I have become until an old lady aged around 70 came up to me when I was leaving the building of a Japanese broadcasting station, took my hands into hers and said, “Thank you so much for giving me the energy to live.” I was stunned to learn that my drama had given hope to an old lady in her 70s, who probably doesn’t have much time left to live. NHK is now rerunning “Winter Sonata” for the fourth time. Whenever I go to the Lotte Department Store in Sogong-dong, Seoul, Japanese women approach me and ask to take pictures with them.

Q2 I was told that your autobiography was published in Japan.

Kyoto News Agency has published a book entitled “Works of Producer Yun Seok-ho.” I heard it was the first time an autobiography of a drama producer has been published in Japan. It is a great honor for me. Also, “A Secret Diary of Winter Sonata,” an essay that I wrote to describe my works, was published by Dokimeki in Japan last month. The book includes a 100-day diary about the filming and the first ever DVD of the making of the film. “Winter Sonata” has drawn so much attention that some 88 books related to the drama have been published in Japan.

Q3 Why do you think “Winter Sonata” is so popular with middle aged women in Japan?

"Winter Sonata” has filled people’s hearts with passion and at the same time brought about a tremendous economic realization of 2 trillion won. I think the drama helped the Japanese public, which is increasingly becoming individualistic, open their eyes to the fact that there is such a thing as pure love. Plus, the way the male character of the drama passionately expressed his feelings to the woman he loves was fresh and unusual to Japanese women.

Some say there are three reasons behind the drama’s popularity: it is non-violent, non-erotic, and non-political. When I heard one middle-aged woman say that, after watching “Winter Sonata,” it was the first time her heart was beating so passionately since hearing The Beatles’ music, I came to realize that “Winter Sonata” has evoked the memories of first love in Japanese women, who have almost forgotten those romantic days of their lives. I was very impressed to hear the Japanese media credit my drama with giving back “young emotions to middle aged women in Japan.”

Q4 Is there any special reason you produce dramas featuring one of the seasons?

I did not plan to produce “seasonal” dramas when I was producing “Autumn Fairy Tale.” But when I started planning my next work, it was a snowy winter. So it occurred to me that I was probably destined to produce dramas featuring the images of different seasons. “Autumn Fairy Tale” depicts romantic love brought by autumn; “Winter Sonata” is a story about “first love filled with white sadness;” and “The Scent of Summer” features the images of “green love.”

...Your dramas are famous for beautiful visual images...

I think the popularity of “Winter Sonata” has transcended national borders and language barriers because it tells about common emotions like first love, nostalgia and innocence through common media such as video, visual art and music. I tend to put the priority on images regardless of whether it is a drama or who the actors are.

Q5 Please, tell us more about dramas with the “Yun Seok-ho” label.

I wanted to describe dreams in my dramas rather than reality, because reality is too harsh. I think one of the roles of a TV drama is to purify people’s emotions. That’s why I wanted to fill our world with the feelings of purity through my dramas.

Q6 How much of “Spring Waltz,” the last in the series of seasonal dramas, has been completed?

Spring is a very short subject for a TV drama. We will start shooting this coming spring and put the drama on the air in the spring of 2006. I plan to film this drama in Daegwallyeong, where we filmed the scenes for the marriage proposal in “Autumn Fairy Tale.” To start shooting in spring, we have to finish all the planning by the end of January at the latest, but we still have much to do. I do not want to rush the production. I think viewers may expect high-quality work that is close to perfection this time, because we have invested so much time and money in this drama.

“Spring Waltz” will be a story about bright, sprightly, yet heartrending love. We have used all possible subjects to develop the story, including birth secrets, incurable diseases and amnesia. So I am doing my utmost to make sure that viewers do not feel bored by cliches, such as the death of the main character, as in most Korean dramas. If we use the same old method again, it will be kind of self-reproduction, I guess.

Q7 As the creator of the “hallyu” wave, what kind of dramas do you want to produce in the future?

We can draw the attention of foreign viewers if we produce “tough and brutal dramas” about atrocities that stimulate story development. But that way we will not be able to convey such Korean values as family love, concern for others and the pursuit of love. If that was the case, the “hallyu” wave would be meaningless. I feel a heavy burden on my shoulders because my dramas, which are feminine, clean and fantasy-like, have come to represent Korean dramas as a whole. I really feel huge pressure, but I will do my best not to ruin what we have achieved so far.

Yun says he still cannot forget his first love. Probably, it is his memories of beautiful and pure love that find a second life in his dramas, creating a massive wave called “hallyu.” After all, what moves people’s hearts beyond national borders are the stories of pure love, not advanced technologies and huge amounts of capital, because love is what every one of us is dreaming of.

Ah... I did catch the first few episodes of Snow Queen when it aired. I usually get my entertainment news from naver.com (Korean site) to see what's the latest tv or movie that's out, or the latest celeb gossip. I watch a lot of the dramas once they come out, but depending on how the story goes, I may continue watching or give up and move on to another one... Snow Queen didn't catch my interest at all, despite my love for Hyun Bin... lol. Too bad, he's got a gf now (Hwang Ji Hyun... she's more recognized now because of him, I think). I'm not a fan of Sung Yuri's acting at all... I think she's way overrated. I don't know, I think I'm more into the romantic comedies or historical/period dramas... rather than the slow, sappy ones. If I absolutely have nothing to watch, I might go back to it~

I just started watching Money Warfare (translation of the title varies)... I love, love, love Park Jin Hee... she's such an underrated actress, and I'm glad to see her in a tv drama again after Come Back Soon-Ae... Kim Jung Hwa also returns to tv... I think she's so gorgeous, despite the lack of acting talent/charisma. I'm still hoping she'll improve, though, and will be given lead roles again. Park Shin Yang is also a great actor to watch (as expected)... so far, it's good... no complaints yet!

Daniel is half-Korean... his mother is Korean, but was adopted at a young age and grew up in the US. He had no knowledge of the language growing up. I believe he's been learning Korean since he's been there... and I'm sure he can speak/understand some, but when hearing him speak, you can tell he's not quite fluent yet.

Default Jeon Do-yeon Wins Best Actress at Cannes

Jeon Do-yeon Wins Best Actress at Cannes

Jeon Do-yeon won the Best Actress award at the 60th Cannes Film Festival, which ended on Sunday, for her role in Lee Chang-song’s “Secret Sunshine.” Jeon is the first Korean and second Asian actress to win the award for best actress at the prestigious international film festival. Maggie Cheung, who was on the jury this year, won in 2004 with “Clean.” Director Lee served as a culture minister from 2003 to 2004.

When her name was announced, the Korean actress hurried on stage and greeted her audience in French. She said, “I can’t believe it. There are fabulous actresses and movies here. I don’t know if I deserve this award to represent them.” She credited Lee and Song Kang-ho, who stars opposite her, saying the director “helped me make an impossible thing possible. Song Kang-ho’s acting supplemented my role and made it look perfect. I’d like to thank him.” At this point, Song stood up and waved toward Jeon on the stage, inviting a round of warm applause. The 34-year-old actress wrapped up her comment by saying, “I will remember tonight forever. Thank you.”

Since Kang Soo-yeon won best actress at the Venice Film Festival in 1987 for her role in “Surrogate Womb”, it has taken a Korean actress 20 years to achieve a Grand Slam of the world’s three prestigious film festivals - Cannes, Venice and Berlin. Moon-So-ri won Best New Performer at Venice for her role in the film “Oasis”, which is produced by Lee Chang-dong.

Many outstanding actresses competed at this year’s Cannes, including Romanian Anamaria Marinca in “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days” and Russia’s Galina Vishnevskaya with “Alexandra.” “It’s a monumental achievement for an Asian actress to win the Best Actress award at Cannes,” said Pusan International Film Festival director Kim Dong-ho after attending the award ceremony. “Maggie Cheung won the award with a movie directed by a French director, and she speaks English in the movie. But Jeon has won the award with a Korean movie in which she speaks her mother tongue.”

Jeon’s achievement suggests the global film industry is paying attention not only to Korean movies but finally to Korean actors. Since 2000, Korean directors Im Kwon-taek (with “Chihwaseon” in 2002), Lee Chang-dong (with “Oasis” in 2002), Park Chan-wook (with “Old Boy” in 2004) and Kim Ki-duk (with “Samaria” and “3-Iron” in 2004) have won best director and the Grand Jury Prize at the Cannes, Venice and Berlin film festivals, but no Korean actors won the best actor award before Jeon.

The grand prix Palme d'Or went to Romanian director Cristian Mungiu for “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days”, a movie about abortion under the Ceausescu regime.

After 10 years of local stardom, Jeon Do-yeon finally wins nod at Cannes

Jeon Do-yeon with Song Kang-ho and Lee Chang-dong

Unlike other actresses of her rank at home, Jeon Do-yeon has had no luck in spreading her name abroad.

Her local hits never went to major film festivals, while new faces like Im Soo-jeong or TV drama fixture Lee Young-ae have had the red carpet unrolled for them in Cannes and Venice.

The wheel of fortune has just been reversed for Jeon. She won the best actress award in the Cannes Film Festival on Sunday with her role in "Secret Sunshine" by Lee Chang-dong. In his congratulatory message to the actress, President Roh Moo-hyun sent a "big round of applause for your passion and efforts that delivered superb acting." In her 10-year screen career, Cannes was the first international fete that invited her.

"In Korea, they have recognized me as an actress and gave me many awards, but to receive the award in Cannes will be an important part of my acting life," she told reporters.

Since she debuted in a cosmetics commercial in 1990 that featured her spotless, toothy smile, Jeon has cruised mostly to perky, easygoing, amicable roles in TV dramas like "The Sunny Side of the Young" and "Our Heaven."

The serious side of her was brought out in her debut film "The Contact." The 1997 melodrama by Jang Yun-hyeon, loved by critics and audiences alike, started a fresh wave in Korean cinema with its depiction of young, urban dwellers seeking emotional connections in Internet chat rooms.

Her following films earned her title "chameleon actress."

Eyebrows were raised when she played sultry sex scenes such as an unfaithful urban wife in "Happy End" (1999). In "My Mother, the Mermaid" (2004) her dual role as the mother and the daughter contributed to the film's commercial success.

Her versatile screen qualities seemed to reach their zenith in "You Are My Sunshine" (2004), in which Jeon plays a seductive girl working at a coffee shop, who turns out HIV positive after marrying her true love, but she still had a way to change.

"I thought I'd pulled out everything Jeon Do-yeon has to give, but that was a misunderstanding," Park Jin-pyo, director of the box-office hit "You Are My Sunshine."

With over a dozen local cinema awards now under her belt, Jeon has discussed the difficulty she experienced playing Shin-ae, the main character in "Secret Sunshine." The extreme pain the young widow feels after her only son is kidnapped and killed was beyond understanding for the actress, who has no child yet. Jeon, 34, married in March.

"I felt pain in my heart," Jeon said after a preview in Seoul in early May. She said the hardest moment came when she had to pick up the phone when it was the kidnapper demanding a ransom, a critical moment in the story when her vivacity life suddenly turns into indefinite fear.

"Secret Sunshine" tells the story of Shin-ae, who leaves Seoul for a remote town to rearrange her life after her unfaithful husband is killed in a car accident. Shin-ae tries her hardest to adjust to the provincial community and not to be looked down on as a single mother, sometimes by ostentatiously pretending to be rich.

Her behavior eventually causes her tragic fall when a neighbor abducts her only son and kills him after she fails to provide a huge ransom.

The unrequited love for her from a snobbish, easygoing car repair shop owner, played by Song Kang-ho, adds comical touches to the gloomy story. It also deals with the issue of religious salvation as Shin-ae tries to find solace in Christianity and then bitterly turns away from it after discovering her own falseness.

Jeon is the second Asian to win the Cannes best actress award following Maggie Cheung credited with her role in "Clean" by French director Olivier Assayas. She was also the second Korean to win an award at a major international film competition. Kang Soo-yeon won the best actress award at the 1987 Venice Film Festival for her role in "Surrogate Mother."

Actress Jeon Do-yeon returns home from Cannes Film Festival

SEOUL, May 29 (Yonhap) -- South Korean actress Jeon Do-yeon returned home Tuesday after winning the award for Best Actress at this year's Cannes Film Festival.

On arrival from Paris at the Incheon International Airport, the 34-year-old star said she was very surprised when her name was called at Cannes.

Jeon won the coveted award for her gripping performance with co-star Song Kang-ho in the movie "Secret Sunshine," directed by Lee Chang-dong.

"Even without thinking of the Best Actress award, just being there was a true honor," she told reporters and fans.

The production team and stars of the movie, including Lee and Jeon, are to hold a press conference on Wednesday.

Jeon is the second South Korean actress to win top laurels at an international film festival. The first went to Kang Soo-yeon for her performance in the movie "Surrogate Mother" at the 1987 Venice Film Festival.

I just started watching Snow Queen after reading this thread and I'm addicted! I love the series, I love Hyun Bin & Im Ju Hwan, they're so hot. I've liked Hyun Bin ever since I watched "My Name is Kim Sam Soon"

Does anybody have any good recommendations for a romantic K-Drama?

Netizens Excited for Jeon Ji-hyun's New Do

Two TV commercials featuring actress Jeon Ji-hyun in short hair and a miniskirt are making big waves online. Jeon, whose trademark is her long straight hair, shows an exceptionally different image in a commercial for cosmetic brand Laneige. An online clip of the commercial is gaining in popularity, with over 310,000 views so far.

It's the first time Jeon has appeared on screen with short hair instead of her usual long locks. The new hair style was made possible with a wig. "It was the first time Jeon ever wore a wig," a Laneige official said. "She's very happy with her long straight hair, but she decided to wear a wig to show another side in the commercial."

Meanwhile, ahead of the release of Samsung Electronics' Ultra Edition 10.9 cell phone (SCH-C220/SPH-C2200 /SPH-C2250), nicknamed the Miniskirt, another Jeon Ji-hyun commercial is also drawing a lot of attention. The product, which has been released in Europe as the U-600, was dubbed the Miniskirt phone from the fact that its shape is similar to the one-piece skirts that are currently in fashion.

The commercial features Jeon in an old-fashioned miniskirt, but she's stopped by the "miniskirt police" for wearing a too-long skirt. She boldly responds by shortening her skirt on the spot. The commercial is building curiosity for the real product.
