(source: JoongAng Daily) No pain, no gain for the streetwise ajumma squad June 11, 2008 Kim Sun-ah Life is tough for four ajumma, or housewives, in “Girl Scouts,” an action comedy directed by Kim Sang-man. The film was released last Thursday. It is the only Korean film that was included among the top five ranking, as of Monday. The film takes place in Bongcheon-3 dong, a deprived area in Seoul where this aggressive middle-aged squad lives. The squad members are I-man (Na Moon-hee), a woman in her 60s working at a supermarket to look after her unemployed son; Bong-soon (Lee Kyung-sil), a widow who lives with an ill child; Mi-kyung (Kim Sun-ah), a divorcee; and Eun-ji (Ko Jun-hee), a caddie. Veteran actress Na Moon-hee (left) and Kim Sun-ah in “Girl Scouts.” [JoongAng Ilbo] The four women are determined to raise the money to open up a store in their neighborhood. It is their sole hope and dream. Though they try their best, they are hit by a piece of news that comes at them like a bolt from the blue. Hye-ran (Lim Ji-eun), who used to be one of the squad members and who is in charge of their collective savings, runs away. The four ajumma, ranging from their 20s to 60s, chase down Hye-ran. Mi-kyung, in her 20s, is the main character in the film. She aggressively drives a yellow van, and in one scene she makes a dramatic 360-degree turn in the road while giving chase. Her scenes, though, are more serious than comic. “I made an agreement with the director that the character shouldn’t be funny,” Kim said. “Mi-kyung is a divorcee with a child to look after. Her life is tense.” If Mi-kyung made people laugh, the story wouldn’t be realistic or deep, according to the actress. Instead, Mi-kyung responds to other comic plays. It was challenging for the unmarried Kim to be an ajumma. During the pre-production meetings, the crew and the director wondered if Mi-kyung should be married with or without kids or just remain single. “The life of a married mother with kids is more complicated,” the director told Kim after the meeting. And the actress agreed. “Mothers who look after children tend to be stronger,” Kim says. “Despite life’s up and downs, they [single mothers] have a reason to live ? their kids.” The actress explained that Mi-kyung becomes more resistant and mentally much tougher when Hye-ran kidnaps her daughter. Kim believes the film’s emotions are based on similar events that have taken place in real life. “In most films and dramas, ajumma appear with tight perms and loose pants,” Kim says. But she questions whether housewives really dress like this these days. “No matter how poor their living conditions, middle-aged women rarely wear loose pants,” Kim says, according to her observations. Instead of baggy pantaloons, Kim shot her scenes wearing three T-shirts, two pants and one pair of sneakers. That’s all she needed, though later on, one shoe wore through. “It’s probably because I had so many action scenes,” she said. In fact, Kim’s experience on the set proved to be a physical one. She showed her swollen anklebones and legs due to the shoot. And that’s not all. While shooting, “Yesterday” (2002), she hurt her pelvis ? there were many kicking scenes. “I can still feel the pain,” she says. While filming “She’s On Duty” (2005), Kim’s legs were always swollen, she said, because she had to run so much. “I always had to wear my ankle brace and a slip-on compression wristband,” Kim said. To Kim, however, the level of scars or aches are in proportion to how earnest or eager she was in the film. As they say, no pain, no gain. “I’m most happy when I’m asked if making the film was a painful experience,” she said. “The aches I receive reflect the amount of effort I put into the film.” By Ki Sun-min JoongAng Ilbo [angie@joongang.co.kr] ======================================== |

(source: KOREA.net) Culinary drama whets appetite of Hungarian viewers June 10, 2008 ![]() Daejanggeum After creating a sensation in Asian and Middle Eastern countries, one of Korea's most popular television dramas based on the universal theme of food and cooking, is now proving successful in its drive to make it in Europe. Hungary's government-run station MTV recently began airing Daejanggeum or Jewel in the Palace in English, a TV series about a woman who becomes the chef and eventually physician for the royal family in 16th century Korea. This is the first time the Korean historical drama, made in 2003, has been broadcast on European television. The series has been airing five times a week from Mar 10. According to AGB, a TV audience measurement agency, the drama has garnered a viewership rate of between 30-37 percent per episode. That translates into about 220,000-360,000 people in Hungary who watched the drama each time it aired. This is a massive success considering that the media industry there regards a program with ratings figures of 15 percent successful. Since the drama has proven successful despite being aired at 10 a.m., when not many people watch TV, MTV decided to rerun the program this September during prime time. The station says it expects about two-to-three million people to watch the drama if it runs during peak evening viewing times. In a country with a population of slightly over 10 million, such figures are very encouraging for a Korean-made program. The Korean Embassy in Budapest says that airing the series on a public television station has been very instrumental in introducing Korea's popular culture to Hungary Viewers have left comments on local websites after each episode, saying they want to learn more about the lavish style of Korea's traditional royal dishes and culture, that they want to buy books or DVDs about the drama and so on. The Embassy adds that they hope the success in Hungary shows the drama's potential to also be received well in other parts of Europe. Daejanggeum has been sold to some 60 countries around the world including many Asian countries, as well as Tanzania's iTV, Ghana TV and Turkey's TRT. Source: Javabeans Hyun Bin’s comeback (times two) June 11th, 2008 // by javabeans ![]() Hyun Bin adds a film, I’m Happy, to his year-end plans, bringing his upcoming project count to two. He’d first gotten his fans excited for his long-awaited comeback with the recent announcement that he would be returning to television by the end of the year. Cast opposite Song Hye Gyo in November’s KBS miniseries The World They Live In, it would be his return after a rather quiet three years (yeah, he did act in Snow Queen following Samsoon, but that drama met with lukewarm — if that — reception). In the film, which started shooting at the end of last month, Hyun Bin plays a patient who connects with a nurse while in the psychiatric ward. I’m Happy will be directed by Yoon Jong-chan of 2001’s mystery-horror film Goosebumps [소름] and 2005’s Blue Swallow [청연], and co-stars Lee Bo Young (so, not exactly strong on the acting front then). The release date for I’m Happy isn’t yet fixed, but it looks to be around the same time as the airdate for The World They Live In. Via Dailian ======================================== |

Source: Javabeans “I am SO glad Yi San is finally ending!” “Tell me about it.” June 10th, 2008 // by javabeans Anyone else confused about the weird, constantly changing drama-programming schedule these days? Well, blame it all on Monday-Tuesday’s sageuk juggernaut drama Yi San. MBC’s extremely popular long-running historical hit (which began airing last September) was originally set to air, I believe, something around 50 episodes. But because of its popularity, the series was extended, and extended again — and then retracted its extension, only to then extend it again. Finally, they’d set today (June 10th, that is) as its finale airdate — until President Lee Myung Bak announced his intention to have a “Talk with the Nation” to air the 9th, which would push Yi San’s finale to the following Monday (June 16). However, then the talk was canceled, bringing the finale back to the 10th, but then MBC decided to reschedule it to the 16th anyway. As a result, KBS and SBS have likewise scrambled to avoid butting heads with the competition with their new dramas. That explains why Strongest Chil Woo, which was originally planning to premiere yesterday (June 9), moved to next Tuesday (June 17), with SBS’s Gourmet following suit. Tuesday is a strange day to premiere a new Monday-Tuesday show (I wonder if both series will then extend their runs by one episode to even out their broadcast schedule), but with Yi San ending Monday, they aren’t taking chances. {both "Gourmet" & "Strongest Chil Woo" will air 2-episodes back-to-back on June 17.} You might wonder why the other two stations would so obviously show their fear of MBC’s drama, but we’re talking brand-new series here. If a minor schedule reshuffling can start the new drama on a clean slate, it’s a small price to pay rather than jinxing its schedule by handicapping its premiere episode knowingly. And MBC’s constant extensions may have frustrated some fans — story always suffers with last-minute tinkering — but MBC’s had a rather lackluster ratings year {New Heart got very high ratings as well}. Nothing else has matched, or even come near, Yi San’s 30% ratings numbers, which is why they’ve been so reluctant to relinquish it. (MBC follows Yi San with the Kim Sun Ah series When Night Comes.) In any case, with their finale still to air, the cast and crew of Yi San gathered at Seoul’s 63 Building on the 10th to pre-emptively raise a toast to the end of their drama (maybe they had no time to shift their location reservation with all this last-minute schedule reshuffling?). Stars Lee Seo Jin and Han Ji Min were naturally present, as was MBC president Eom Ki Young. Who wants to lay bets on how long it takes Lee Seo Jin to announce his wedding plans now that he’s free from filming? Original Korean Article: Starnews 2008-06-05 10:33 English Translation Credit: HanCinema Kim Jeong-hwa "Made my decision based on loyalty to Kim Seon-ah" ![]() Kim Jeong-hwa, who was the last to join the cast of MBC "When It's At Night", revealed that she decided to join because of her loyalty to Kim Seon-ah and Director Son Hyeong-seok. She joined filming late last month. She said, "It was very last-minute, but I took it positively, and looking over the synopsis, I realized the character was fun". Kim Jeong-hwa has always showed her close relationship with Kim Seon-ah, and she has worked with Director Son on the cable drama "The Devil that Drinks Wine". Kim Jeong-hwa plays sly Wang Joo-hyeon, who enters the cultural bureau with the thought of finding a potential husband who will succeed as a high government official. She and Kim Seon-ah compete for Lee Dong-geon. Lee Soo-kyeong and Park Ji-yoon were cast in this role but did not go through with it. Kim Jeong-hwa explained, "Wang Joo-hyeon is an innocent character. She is completely different from me but we have something in common. We say anything without thinking but that becomes the topic of conversation". She continued, "Kim Jeong-hwa is calm, but Wang Joo-hyeon is careless, Wang Joo-hyeon doesn't have scars, but Kim Jeong-hwa has a deep scar". She revealed the scars she received from debuting at a young age and experiencing the world early. The drama allows us to rediscover the worth and importance of our culture, and the romantic comedy "When It's At Night" will first air on the 23rd. ======================================== |

Original Korean Article: Heraldbiz 2008-06-07 16:12 English Translation Credit: HanCinema Han Ji-min, who finished filming "Yi San", interview "I wouldn't love a real king" ![]() MBC historical drama "Yi San", which has been a top drama for nine months, has two episodes left from its total 77 episodes. Han Ji-min, who played Seong Song-yeon, the woman that the king loved, matured as an actress through this drama. Song-yeon, who became a royal concubine, left the world on the 2nd by a disease, and made Yi San and all the viewers sad. The viewers' board overflowed with messages like "Please revive Song-yeon" and "If Song-yeon dies, what pleasure is there in watching?" It's because they were empathizing with the character of Song-yeon. During the press conference, Director Lee Byeong-hoon said that Han Ji-min was "a bright actress with a clean appearance". Her small body frame incites men to protect her, her soft and pretty face, and the tears that flow from her sad eyes are still in viewers' memories. We had a phone interview with Han Ji-min as she was moving to her last filming on the 7th. -You're filming even though Song-yeon is dead? -Although she is dead, she comes out for a bit in Jeong-jo's imagination. If it's a scene of a memory, we can use a scene filmed before, but it's a fantastical scene where Jeong-jo meets Song-yeon, so we have to film it again. -Thoughts on ending the drama -For any work, there is meaning. When one work is done, I feel like I've climbed a mountain. But "Yi San" was a long drama, so it's on a bigger scale. In other words, it was a large mountain. It was a bigger role than in "Dae Jang Geum" and I was overwhelmed, but I was able to climb over the mountain because there were many seniors helping me. Just looking at the acting of my seniors taught me a lot. -Was there anything difficult. -There wasn't anything too difficult in the beginning as an artist. The speech wasn't historical so it was comparatively easy. But after entering the palace, I became a concubine, changed my speech, had a baby who died from a disease, and had my second baby die while pregnant. Acting out the change of mind in a short time was very hard. It wasn't easy to act out the aging process as a woman and the maturing process as a person. At these times, I was able to overcome the hardships with help and advice from Kyeon Miri. -There was an article that you fainted while filming. -In the beginning, my body wasn't well. But rather than fainting, I was just unable to film. During the later parts, I had only a few scenes, so I had a lot of time to rest. Now, I'm in great condition. Lee Seo-jin would have had it harder, who had to film on set two days, and film outside two to three days a week. -How was filming the scenes up to your death? -It was a little after resting due to the strike of actors' labor union, so my voice was extremely lively. My voice wasn't like a sick person's, so that day, I didn't sleep and stayed up wide awake. So automatically, I had dark circles and my voice was a little closed. -The romance between Jeong-jo and Song-yeon was another fun part of "Yi San". Tell us your thoughts about romance scenes. -There are people who ask me if I wasn't disappointed because the romance scenes were cut off in the middle. But looking at the drama as a whole, I think it's proper that a majority of it is about the political reformation against his opponents after he becomes king. At first, it was also awkward to call Yi San 'king'. When Song-yeon was in pitiful situations, it was hard for me too. In that sense, it came naturally. As I thought about how to express the love I've felt since he was a prince, time flew by. The romance between Yi San and Song-yeon was passionate, and it was almost like present-day dramas. To Jeong-jo, who faced the risk of poisoning and conspiracy, Song-yeon was like a place of refuge. Song-yeon's only love was Yi San. As Song-yeon, who knew of Dae-su's feelings, it was very unfortunate. -The chemistry with senior actors. -Lee Seo-jin jokes around a lot. But when we start shooting, he shows great levels of concentration. It's a little hateful. But he talks to me a lot about acting and takes care of me. But it is more comfortable to be with Lee Jong-soo than the king. It was comfortable to act with him. I also got a lot of advice from Kyeon Miri during the scene where I had to have the baby. -If you were to really date a king. -It's not very realistic. The queen loves her, and she gets pregnant the same time Hwa-bin, another concubine, does. There's nothing like that. In today's world, it's cheating. I was rather jealous. Before my character died, I wanted to go the grave of the real Song-yeon, but it was a private area, so I was able to go after my filming. Her grave was moved. Next to her grave is Hwa-bin's, and it was a strange feeling. -Do you realize your popularity? -I want to thank the viewers for the high ratings. I couldn't experience the public's reactions because I was busy filming. At the filming place in Yong-in, some elderly women called me 'Song-yeon'. -How was it to be in the classical "Yi San" and be the MC for the modern "YunYeGa News" -It wasn't an obstacle to the drama. Although YunYeGa News is not acting, it was a promise to them so I didn't give it up. Being the MC is very comfortable. I just need to show who I am. -You seem very calm. Your real personality? -I'm very optimistic. If I get into a hard situation, I argue that I learned a lot. I also like talking to my fans. There are many guys who ask me why I'm so tough when they meet me in person. I think my fans like the person I am on screen better. -Resolutions and plans? -I recognize genuine acting. I am happiest when I get this feeling. Acting that is lacking in genuineness is awkward and unnatural for me. I still lack many things but I will try to show genuine acting. After this drama, I'm going to rest for a bit. I'm going to go to Australia with my parents to visit my sister. I haven't thought about the genre for my next work yet. ======================================== |

(source: KBS Global 2008-06-13) Viewer rating of Iljimae Surpasses 20 Percent The viewer rating of the SBS TV drama “Iljimae,” starring Lee Jun-ki, has surpassed 20 percent for its 7th episode, cementing the show's position as the most popular Mon/Tues TV drama. {wrong info. Mon/Tues is led by Yi San} According to AGB Nelson Media Research on Thursday, the average viewer rating of Iljimae’s Wednesday episode was higher than 20 percent. MBC’s “Spotlight” and KBS 2TV’s “Sisters in Love,” which also aired in the same slot, recorded viewer ratings of 10.1 percent and 10.5 percent, respectively. Iljimae’s Wednesday episode showed hero Yong-ee’s attempts to transform into Iljimae. Yong-ee, who falls into despair as he witnesses his long-lost sister being executed, vows to avenge his father’s death. There has been another change in the dynamics of the Wed/Thur TV dramas along with Iljimae's soaring popularity. “Women in the Sun” has begun to move ahead of Spotlight, albeit by small margins. Women in the Sun, starring Kim Ji-su and Lee Ha-na, is the newest drama among the three TV dramas. Although it has a typical story centered on the secret of a birth and good vs. evil, it has beaten Spotlight, starring Son Ye-jin, in its fifth episode. Spotlight, which revolves around the lives of news reporters, has been losing ground due to a number of complicated issues such as changes in writers and poor storyline and directing. {?poor storyline and directing? Spotlight is from MBC & Women in the Sun is from KBS} ======================================== |
