Moon Geun Young returns to dramas; the sageuk revival continues

It looks like we’ve got a lot of upcoming dramas garnering some buzz from the high profiles of the actors and producers attached. (There’s Daemool with Go Hyun Jung, Kwon Sang Woo; Rivals with Chae Rim; Beethoven Virus with Kim Myung Min, Lee Jia and PD Lee Jae Kyu; Iljimae with Lee Junki; Iljimae with Lee Seung Gi; Choi Kang Chil Woo starring Eric; Boys Before Flowers by sheer virtue of its Hana Yori Dango connection; and so on.)

Add one more to the list: The Painter of Wind [바람의 화원], starring Korea’s Little Sister Moon Geun Young — taking her first role since entering university — and veteran actor Park Shin Yang.

Based on a bestselling book of the same name by writer Lee Jung Myung, the series is based in the late Joseon era and will be directed by Jang Tae Yoo (War of Money, Bad Housewife), airing on SBS as a Wednesday-Thursday drama. Originally planned to premiere in early September, it has a high chance of airing instead in October.



The story centers around two talented artists and their lives, artistic rivalries, and loves (Moon Geun Young’s character dresses as a man, while Park Shin Yang’s a senior artist and something of a mentor); the plot thickens with a mysterious murder.

I know you’re gonna say it, so I’ll say it first: Moon Geun Young paired with Park Shin Yang?? Nothing against the guy — he’s a fine actor — but lordy that’s a squicky age difference (she was born in 1987, he was born in 1968). I know, I know, there have been other big age gaps that don’t bother me; for instance, Seo Ji Hye (23) with Ahn Jae Wook (36) in the upcoming I Love You. Or, Ara (18) versus either Yoon Kye Sang or Jin Yi Han (both 29) in the currently airing Who Are You? But while Yoon Kye Sang and Jin Yi Han both have youthful and trendy images, Park Shin Yang has always been an ajumma-magnet.

Rain to Begin International PR Tour for 'Speed Racer'



Actor and singer Rain will begin a world tour for the promotion of the simultaneous international release of Hollywood's "Speed Racer" on May 8th.

According to Warner Brothers Korea, Rain starts his promotional tour in Korea on the 20th, then Hong Kong on the 23rd and onto Los Angeles, California, where he will join producer Joel Silver, actors Emile Hirsch and Matthew Fox for the premiere. Rain is also scheduled for a Japan appearance in June.

"Hollywood actors are promoting the movie on various talk shows [in the United States] but in Asia, no one is as popular as Rain so we are expecting a great response from his promotions of the film here," announced a representative of Warner Brothers.

At 300 million dollars (USD) for its production and 80 million in marketing costs, "Speed Racer" is a hefty blockbuster about the best racers around the world battling in cars equipped with cutting-edge technology.

Last Tuesday, Variety Magazine printed that "Speed Racer" was chosen as the closing film for the 7th Tribeca Film Festival in New York City (4/23-5/4).

Homegrown ‘Maple Story’ Popular Worldwide

A children's online computer game is continuing to entertain a global audience five years after its launch, thanks to its entertaining storyline and clever marketing strategy.

Online game publisher Nexon said that it signed contracts Thursday to provide its "Maple Story'' game in Vietnam and Brazil, which will become the 59th and 60th country's to have the online game. The game now boasts 83 million players worldwide, including 18 million in South Korea. Its Web site has introductions written in 10 languages.

"Maple Story'' is an outdated game in terms of technology ― it does not have fancy 3-D graphics, nor have elaborate music and sound effects. The game's 2-D characters move around on a horizontal plane, just like in the 1980s hit game "Super Mario Bros,'' and defeat monsters they encounter on the one-way journey. Nexon says such easy, intuitive control and storyline is one of its main virtues.

"We believe that its simple user interface and cute graphics will bring good results in Brazil and Vietnam, too,'' said Ryu In-seon, the leader of the global service team.

Another reason for the continuing success is its likeable characters and solid storytelling. Producing comic books and a TV animation with the same characters is helping the game's sales a lot, too.

"The popularity of `Maple Story' comics and animation is enriching the game's characters,'' said Lee Dong-joo, a public relations officer.

The game has been considered a model case of the so-called one-source, multi-use project. Back in 2005, Nexon published a comic book that featured the game's characters. The move was a huge success. The comic celebrated its 26th edition in March, and total sales of the series reached seven million, making it one of the most popular Korean comic books.

Nexon recognized the game has further potential. Now more than 700 character products have been developed. It introduced "Maple Story'' card games in the United States and Canada last year.

This week, SBS began to broadcast the "Maple Story'' cartoon in Korea, twice a week. Produced by Japan's Mad House studio, it is already a hit in Japan where it has been aired by TV Tokyo from last October to March. Nexon is considering selling the film to other countries where the online game version is available.

Though children are its main audience, some adults are more engaged in the game than kids. According to the company, the highest-level player of "Maple Story'' is a man in his 40s who owns a pizza delivery shop in Gwangju.

Jo Hyun Jae, bracing self for public outcry

Hmm. Looks like Jo Hyun Jae is in some hot water.

The actor recently starred in the film GP506 (which the above pic is from; it’s not a real army pic) and currently stars in the new drama Three Dads, One Mom (for which I’m holding off judgment till I see the second episode — I wasn’t wowed by the first, but first episodes are so unpredictable).

He recently began his military service on the 1st, but has now just been released from training after only four days. That in itself is not terribly strange:

“According to military service law, if one is found to be unfit for active duty following a physical examination, due to disease or mental or physical disorder, or requires more than fifteen days’ recovery time for said condition, said person may be dismissed.”

What IS weird, though, is the fact that is just becoming known that Jo Hyun Jae left in the middle of filming a drama to enlist in his military service — and upon his dismissal after four days, immediately returned to filming. Something’s fishy over in Three Dads territory. (I don’t know the specifics of Three Dads, but generally a drama begins filming anywhere from a month to several months in advance. A trendy drama that doesn’t require excessive preparation — unlike, say, an epic or high-budget production like Legend — may typically have about eight episodes completed when the series begins airing. It is definitely weird to have started military service in the middle of a project.)

The situation is starting to stir up lots of suspicion and criticism — if he suffers from a severe enough condition to prevent him from training, how can he be fit enough to film a drama? — which is not helped by the fact that the drama producers have offered “no explanation, and have evaded questions” about the topic. Furthermore, prior to Jo’s enlistment, the producers had been unusually hush-hush about his impending service date.

Some of Jo Hyun Jae’s fans are supporting their star, casting aspersions on the validity of the news reports, but a majority of them agree that things look suspicious.

The mandatory-military-service topic is always a source of major debate, and a definite hot-button issue. Everyone knows that effing around with draft-dodging schemes in Korea is serious, career-damaging (if not career-ending) business. Methinks he’s got some ’splainin’ to do

Won Bin to star in director Bong Joon-ho's new film "Mother"

Top Korean Wave star Won Bin (Autumn Fairy Tale, Taegugki) will return to the silver screen with "The Host" & "Memories Of Murder" director Bong Joon-ho's new film "Mother". This is Won Bin's 1st movie since "My Brother" from 4 years ago.

Playing Won Bin's mother is actress Kim Hye-ja (Angry Mom, Princess Hours); she is also breaking a 10-year hiatus from the silver screen.

Filming, starting this Fall, is planned for release in the 1st half of next year.
