Chinese Stars Back in Seoul

By Han Sang-hee
Staff Reporter

Chinese superstars Kelly Chen, left, and Leon Lai pose at the press conference of "An Empress and the Warriors" in CGV Yongsan, Seoul, Friday. / Chosun

Chinese super stars Leon Lai and Kelly Chen may have not visited Korea for a while, but they proved they were still fond of Korean fans at their new movie's premiere Friday.

At the press conference of "An Empress and the Warriors'' release, Lai and Chen seemed excited to be back in Seoul.

"I am so happy to be here again,'' said Chen, dressed in an elegant white and gray dress, as she greeted reporters and her fans in perfect Korean.

"An Empress and the Warriors'' depicts the tragic love story of an empress and two warriors. Due to director Ching Siu-tung, renowned for his Chinese martial arts movies such as "Naked Weapon'' (2002) and "A Chinese Ghost Story'' (1987), fans may thought the movie would be full of martial arts scenes, but "Empress'' also depicts a heart-breaking love story.

Chen plays the role of courageous Yen Feier, the empress of a kingdom 2,000 years ago in ancient China. She is left to reign over the war-torn nation, and also has to protect herself from enemies who wish to see her fall and steal the crown. Torn between her responsibility of being queen and also her love toward a dispatched soldier Duan Lan-quan (Leon Lai) and general of her kingdom Muyong Xuehu (Donnie Yen), Yen Feier challenges herself with decisions that may result in her death and also of those she loves.

This is the first period film for Chen, who also starred in "Internal Affairs,'' (2002) and when she was asked about her starring in a war movie, she admitted that it was not easy.

"Of course, I was worried. This was my first action, let alone war, movie. Before the start-up, I learned archery, horse riding, wrestling, and martial arts for three months,'' she said.

The 34-year-old actress admitted she was worried even after all the lessons, but the director helped her through it.

"Director Ching had many requests. But all of the action scenes were perfectly arranged and he continuously gave me faith that I could do this,'' Chen said.

Leon Lai, famous for his romantic roles among Korean fans, also played tough action scenes throughout the movie, but still managed to show his soft side.

"Amid the tragic situation of war, Kelly and I create our own love story line within the movie. Having to act a character I have never done before was difficult, but I tried hard to concentrate on my role. When I am at the shoot, I look up to the blue sky and the trees, let go of everything inside of me and then start reading the script. This way, I discover myself as the character, not Leon Lai,'' he said.

When asked about the last love scene, the 41-year-old actor did not hesitate to express his thoughts and his respect toward the director.

"I think judging a movie as old-fashioned all depends on the viewers. I am an actor, and an actor respects the director and his requests. I can assure you that every scene was created by director Ching's efforts and I respect that,'' he said. Lai also offered to do an episode where he really had to ride an air balloon over a cliff, instead of leaving the scene to computer graphics.

"I was so sure that this scene would be done by computer graphics. But I really had to ride the air balloon from the cliff,'' he laughed.

Fans will also have the chance to listen to the two actors, also being successful singers, as they sing together in the movie.

"We have very similar voices, so it was nice to sing together. I think our voices go well together,'' Chen said.

When they were asked if there was anything they wanted to do during their visit to Seoul, Lai answered that if he had time to stay for a month, he would like to rent a car and live an ordinary life in Korea.

Chen, however, had more specific plans. "I want to go and eat tteokbokki (Korean rice cake with spicy pepper sauce). Tteokbokki is very delicious!'' she said in Korean, drawing laughter from reporters and fans.

The epic movie "An Empress and the Warriors'' will be in theaters April 9.

Stars Join in Mourning for Death of Actor's Brother

By Chung Ah-young
Staff Reporter

Actor Lee Dong-gun walks into the chapel where the ashes of his younger brother were temporarily placed in an urn Samsung Medical Center in Ilwon-dong, southern Seoul, Friday. / Yonhap

Numerous celebrities have joined in mourning for hallyu star Lee Dong-gun's brother at a chapel in Samsung Medical Center in southern Seoul.

Lee's brother, Lee Joon-yub, 19, was fatally stabbed near the World Square Shopping center in Sydney, Australia, March 20. He and his friend, who were both studying in Sydney, were attacked during an argument with two Chinese gang members. The 19-year-old's body was cremated in Sydney on March 26 and Lee brought back his brother's ashes to Seoul on March 28.

Actors and actresses, close to Lee, visited the chapel to convey their condolences over his brother's death.

Han Ji-hye, Lee's ex-girlfriend, visited the chapel and grieved with Lee and his family. She burst into tears at the sight of the brother's portrait.

Han was told the news after filming "I Hate You But It's Fine'' a local hit drama ― now airing on KBS, and rushed to the hospital.

Other actors including Kim Min-jong, Cho Jae-hyun and Kim Heung-soo also visited the chapel.

Korean fans were stunned to learn that the victim was Lee's brother, flooding Lee's homepages with messages of condolence.

After hearing of his younger brother's death, Lee, who had been very close to him, immediately flew to Australia along with his parents to claim the body and attend a requiem mass at the St John's College Chapel, at the University of Sydney, which Lee's brother had attended.

A memorial service will be conducted in a Catholic church on March 31.

Lee made his debut in 1997 as an actor and singer. Since then, he has starred in several films including "My Boyfriend is Type B'' and hit dramas, such as "Sweet 18,'' "Lovers in Paris'' and "Stained Glass'' in 2004, and "Smile Again'' in 2006.

Hubby, Sister and I got hooked on Full House last year and watched the whole series in less than a week! We're not even Korean! It was so cute but I thought the ending could be better, though. But all in all, we loved it!

12,000 Fans attend Ahn Jae-woo's Concert

Singer Ahn Jae-wook, who made his official debut in Japan in front of 3,500 fans at the NKH Hall on March 31, 2006, held a series of other concerts later that year in Osaka and Tokyo. Ahn also performed in four major cities in Japan in June 2007, including Yokohama, Sapporo and Nagoya, and personally met his fans later at the biggest concert hall in Japan. Ten thousand fans flocked to the Tokyo concert but even more fans gathered at this 2007 concert.

The concert was a celebration of the release of his single albums in Korea and Japan. In Korea, the album was released under the title 'To My Love' and in Japan, 'To You.' The album contained three songs: the title track 'Is This the End,' 'Goodbye' and 'She Is.' Ahn performed 'Goodbye' in Japanese specifically for his Japanese fans. The artist had previously released his best album in Japan.

Yiishima, who attended both the 2006 and 2007 concerts, said she is a ardent fan of Ahn, whom she says is a wonderful actor and singer. The self-professed long-time fan also expressed her excitement over Ahn's brand new drama series entitled 'I Love You.'

Kangta bid farewell to his fans at his last concert before leaving for the military, Sunday afternoon. The former member of boy band H.O.T, successful solo singer and a Hallyu (Korean wave) super star in China will become a soldier, as he will serve his 2-year-military service.

Fans from Korea, China and even Hong Kong were waiting outside the concert hall at Yonsei University, eager to get a glimpse of the star before the event.

At the press conference, which was packed with reporters from overseas ― including China and Hong Kong, Kangta looked tired from his previous concert the other day, but was eager to share his thoughts about leaving his fans and serving the military.

"It's not like any other performance because I'm leaving right away (on April 1). Now that I am really leaving (for the military), I am grateful for everything and to everyone,'' the 28-year-old singer said.

Kangta is one of many male celebrities scheduled to enroll in the military this year, and when he was asked if he was worried or even afraid, the singer admitted that he was indeed worried.

"This is a whole new experience for me. I haven't lived a normal life and adapting to a new environment with new people will be difficult. I'm worried if I'll be able to fit in,'' he said, but added that he was trying his best to stay upbeat.

"I'm also worried that my seniors will want me to ask other singers to come and perform. I don't know what I would say if they ask me to do that,'' he laughed.

His concert, "Eternity,'' was aimed at looking back at his last twelve years as a singer and thanking his fans.

When asked about what he would like to do on his last day before leaving, he thought for a moment and finally said that he wanted to go to a theme park.

"Being a celebrity, I haven't had the chance to roam around freely. And when I serve the military it will be more difficult,'' he said, then continued after pausing a bit. "But come to think of it, I will have to cut my hair, so I don't know if going to the theme park will be possible,'' he said with a smile.

Fans Give Shinhwa Members Surprise Gift

'Shinhwa Must Go On 10th Anniversary Live,' a special concert marking the 10th anniversary of Shinhwa's debut, was held at the Fencing Stadium at the Seoul Olympic Park.

After the three-and-an-half-hour performance, including encore numbers, Shinhwa members got ready to step off the stage when a large screen installed on the stage began showing a video interview of close friends of Shinhwa who had shared the ups and downs with the members during the past ten years.

Shinhwa members, who were completely taken off-guard by the surprise video screening, sat on the stage and watched the video. Deeply touched by the words of their closest friends, members openly shed tears.

The group was then presented with a cake with a single candle in the shape of the number ten. Fans and Shinhwa, all moved to tears, sang 'happy birthday' together.

The concert will be the last performance for Shinhwa members for the next three years as members Eric and Kim Dong-wan will soon begin their military services. The event was a memorable and touching affair for Shinhwa members, their fans and members of the group's management company.

Shinhwa to Hold Last Concert in Tokyo

Korean pop group Shinhwa will bid "sayonara'' to its Japanese fans with two concerts in Tokyo in April. Yonhap News reported that Open World Entertainment, the agency in charge of Shinhwa's overseas concerts, said the six-member group will be holding two concerts on April 18 and 19 at the Nippon Budokan, central Tokyo.

This is expected to be the last concert featuring all the Shinhwa members, at least for the next few years. Open World Entertainment said all the Shinhwa members, except for Shin Hye-sung, will be enlisting in the military this year. All Korean males are required to serve in the military for two years.
