Chae Rim heads for the Blue House

Chae Rim, aka plucky Dal Ja of last year’s hit romantic comedy series Dal Ja’s Spring, has been cast to headline the new KBS Monday-Tuesday drama series Rivals [강적들], which takes place in the Blue House (Cheongwadae), Korea’s presidential residence, opposite Lee Jong Hyuk (sexy!) and Lee Jin Wook (cute!)

Chae Rim’s character — energetic, prone to rashness — enters the Blue House as a new employee (security service agent) and rises to success; the series centers on “the world, the loves, and daily lives” of those in service in the Blue House.

Lee Jin Wook (Air City, Smile Again, Someday) takes the part of the president’s haughty, troublesome and rude son, while Lee Jong Hyuk (A Good Day to Have an Affair, A Dirty Carnival, Green Rose) is the dark horse of the presidential security service and Chae Rim’s colleague. Through them the drama will showcase lots of action and a look behind the scenes at the agents’ physical training, firearms drills, special guard duty, etc., while the three main characters (naturally!) fall into a love triangle. Some settings may be novel but the setup is as old as the form. Not that the presidential backdrop is entirely new — in 2006, there was the KBS four-episode mini-drama Special Crime Investigation: Murder in the Blue House [특수수사일지:1호관 사건]. And of course, there was also the Eugene/Lee Minki romantic comedy Really Really Like You, which took a more lighthearted approach.

The series will be directed by Han Joon Seo PD of Capital Scandal, and penned by writer Kang Eun Kyung of Dal Ja’s Spring, Bichunmu, and Hotelier. Rivals will take to air after Single Papa in Love finishes its run, premiering on April 14.

It’s a Blue House season

First we’ll have KBS’s upcoming Blue House-centered drama, the Chae Rim vehicle Rivals, after which SBS’s Daemool premieres. I first mentioned the manhwa-based project back when SBS was courting Lee Young Ae for the lead role, but Lee Young Ae turned it down, and they’ve finally settled on another female to headline in a casting move I’m just as pleased with — Go Hyun Jung.

I’ve loved Go Hyun Jung (HIT, What’s Up Fox?, the seminal Sandglass) for a while now. She’s one of those actors with character, in addition to being classy and talented. All that on top of being beautiful in a very natural, down-to-earth sort of way.

In Daemool, Go Hyun Jung plays the first ever Korean female president, who rose to prominence after ditching a career as a public prosecutor to help the underprivileged as a human rights lawyer; the story unfolds upon a backdrop of “love and hate, political intrigue, and feuding.” The original manhwa, it may be noted, was rated “adults only.” I expect the drama will be toned down but hopefully retain some edge.

Kwon Sang Woo has already been cast as the male lead, and the creatives behind the series include director Kim Hyung Shik (Surgeon Bong Dal Hee) and writer Yoo Dong Yoon. The manhwa was created by Park In Kwon, and the drama, produced by Lee Kim Productions (War of Money), is scheduled to broadcast after On Air ends. {schedule change: Iljimae will replace On Air}

Films for Jeonju Int’l Film Festival Selected



Twelve films from all over the world were selected for the international competition section of the 2008 Jeonju International Film Festival slated from May 1st through 9th.

The international competition section is for the films that best demonstrate new directors’ aesthetic potentials. This category well reflects the purpose of the Jeonju International Film Festival, which is to discover new, promising directors.

The film that wins the grand prize of Woosuk Award will receive 10 thousand U.S. dollars and the runner-up 7,000 dollars. The panel of judges will be comprised of five reputed filmmakers from Korea and abroad, including Korean director Bong Jun-ho of “The Host” and actress Eom Ji-won. The twelve entries for the international competition section include “Captain Ahab (France),” “Continental (Canada),” “My Last Secret (China),” “Sky, Earth, and Rain (Chile),” and “Streets (Kazakhstan).”

Eric to Star in a Historic/Action Drama



Eric of pop group Shinhwa has been cast in the leading role of a new historic/action drama tentatively titled “The Mighty Kang Chil-woo.” The new TV series is about a low-ranking law enforcement officer in the Joseon Dynasty who turns into an assassin at night. The background is set in Euigumbu, the Joseon era’s version of today’s prosecutors’ office, and tells the story of the secretive world of assassins.

Eric has been working mostly overseas with his fellow Shinhwa members and has not engaged in any solo activities since he finished his last TV drama “Que Sera, Sera” last May. He is to begin his mandatory military service soon after he wraps up the drama. “The Mighty Kang Chil-woo” is to be aired in early June.

Joon Park Finishes Filming “Dragonball”



Joon Park, a former member of idol group g.o.d., has finished filming his first acting role in “Dragonball” in mid-March. Park plays the role of Yamcha in the adventure/action film. The character of Yamcha starts off as a thief and antagonist of Goku, but quickly reforms to become an ally and Z Fighter.

Park is currently looking at some scripts for his next role in a Hollywood film. He has received good responses from the “Dragonball” crew for his portrayal of comical, yet strong character of Yamcha.

Director James Wong of “Final Destination” directed the film, which has Justin Chatwin in the starring role of Goku and Hong Kong-based actor Yun-Fat Chow playing Roshi. The cast also includes another Korean-American performer Jamie Chung in the role of Chi Chi and Randall Duk Kim of Korean and Chinese descent as Grandpa Gohan. “Dragonball” is to be released worldwide in April of 2009.

"Speed Racer" is based on the popular Japanese animation "Mach Go Go." The movie is expected to be released next May and cost W260 billion (US$1=W924). There’s such a lot of Tiffany’s world to see
Tiffany’s works chronicle the history of luxury goods in the West.

Ever since the opening scene of “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” when Audrey Hepburn emerges from a taxi on Fifth Avenue wearing a black silk Givenchy gown and a diamond necklace by Jean Schlumberger, the history of fashion has changed for the better.

Schlumberger, the creator of “Bird on a Rock,” a luxury ornament supposedly made out of the world’s largest setting for a yellow diamond, became a Tiffany’s household name. The bird is one of the pieces featured in a retrospective of the jeweler’s work called “A Diamond in the City” at the Museum of Decorative Art in the Louvre. And here’s the good news: It comes to Seoul’s Hangaram Design Museum in an exhibit called “The Jewels of Tiffany (1837-2007)” on March 28. It is one of three major jewelry exhibitions taking place in Korea over the next few months.

Van Cleef Arpels is holding “Jewelry of Eternity” from March 28 to April 4 at Seoul’s Shinsegae Department Store in its Munwha Hall.

Cartier is holding “The Art of Cartier” from July 13 to Aug. 22 at the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Deoksu Palace, central Seoul.

The Tiffany and Co. show started at London’s Somerset House in 1996 and it moved to the former residence of Prince Asaka of the Japanese royal family in Tokyo last year. The show celebrates the Tiffany and Co. brand, which Charles Lewis Tiffany founded in 1837 on Lower Broadway, New York, as a “stationery and fancy goods” store.

The Seoul exhibition will include an arresting display of Tiffany’s collections, many of which have been owned by celebrated historical figures.

On show will be a pearl necklace and brooch that Abraham Lincoln gave his wife Mary Todd Lincoln at his presidential inauguration in 1861 and an emerald and diamond brooch once worn as a belt decoration by Empress Eugenie, the wife of Napoleon Bonaparte III.

Each section of the exhibition includes motifs and materials from specific eras.

In “Opulent Accessories,” the exhibition displays exotic fashion souvenirs that were popular in the early 1900s such as fancy canes, a parasol that had a jeweled clock attached to its handle, a perfume bottle crafted from patented Favrile glass and a man’s ornamented cigarette case.

An entire section is devoted to Tiffany’s diamonds and pearls that date from 1870 to the start of World War I. This period was the heyday of diamonds, when Americans invested heavily in the jewelry industry.

There are pink pearls extracted from conch shells that were used to create corsages during the late 19th century, as well as gold, platinum and sapphires that were shown at the Paris Expo in 1889. One of the most precious pieces is a 128.54-carat yellow diamond that the company’s founder purchased. It was stored at Tiffany’s flagship store in New York.

Other works chronicle the history of luxury goods in the West. Included are “Cesnola,” a golden bracelet inspired by ancient Greek jewelry, and a diamond spray brooch designed by Rene Lalique, a leading glass artist of the Art Nouveau period.

The exhibition also celebrates lesser-known works by Tiffany’s designers. The work of Elsa Peretti, an Italian designer noted for the fluid lines of her stone settings, resonates with radical ornaments shaped like snakes, bones and teardrops.

Other designers include fashion designer Paloma Picasso, daughter of Pablo Picasso, who uses unconventional materials like pernambuco wood and cacholong, a type of opal.

Diamonds a cut above the rest? Tiffany & Co. thinks so

Annamarie V. Sandecki, the director of Tiffany and Co. Archives, outlines some key events in the development of the company’s history and discusses the highlights of the exhibition.

Q.What are some of the highlight works in the exhibition?

A.The “Tiffany Diamond” in the “Bird on a Rock” setting. It is one of the largest fancy yellow diamonds in the world. It was discovered in De Beers diamond mines, which used to be called the Kimberley diamond mines, in South Africa in 1877.

The 287.42-carat stone was purchased the following year by Tiffany and Co. In order to enhance the sparkle, the unprecedented cushion-shape brilliant cut was used. After the cutting, it became 128.54 carats which had 82 more facets than the conventional round brilliant cut. The stone is just over an inch wide (approx. 2.54 centimeters) and seven-eighths of an inch (approx. 2.2 centimeters) from top to bottom.

The orchid brooches by Paulding Farnham is another one. In 1889 the enameled and diamond orchid brooches designed by the company’s designer Paulding Farnham created a sensation when they won medals at the 1889 Paris Exposition.

What is the significance of orchids?
Orchids in the late 19th century were synonymous with luxury and wealth and these pieces evoke the so-called Gilded Age. They also balance the extreme naturalism of the enameling, accurately recording their coloring, with the abstract designs created by the patterns of the diamonds.

What other jewelry can we expect to see?
We will also be exhibiting works by Louis Comfort Tiffany, the son of founder Charles Lewis Tiffany. He was already known for his innovative glass and other decorative work when he joined his father’s company as art director in 1907. In this exhibition, more than 30 pieces of his jewelry are being shown. Highlights include a grapevine fringe necklace made of amethyst and jade set in gold, which was exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1906. Also included is a group of whimsical brooches with subtle enamel work and lustrous toning gemstones.

Can you tell us about some of the jewelry for men in this exhibit?
There are pocket watches, cufflinks, a cigar cutter and rings. Since the beginning, Tiffany has offered a wide variety of products and I think the exhibit will attract visitors from all walks of life.

In your opinion, what are the greatest strengths of Tiffany and Co. in relation to other luxury jewelry brands?

Tiffany and Co. introduced a unique American style, a departure from the European design aesthetic and the Victorian era’s mannered opulence. The founder Charles Lewis Tiffany was inspired by the natural world, which he interpreted in exquisite patterns of simplicity, harmony and clarity. These became the hallmarks of Tiffany design. In our opinion, this style has established Tiffany’s as the arbiter of taste, elegance and sophistication.

Top stars' next work anticipated


'A Find Day' Jeon Do-yeon & Ha Jeong-woo

Top stars including Jeon Do-yeon, Choi Min-sik, Song Kang-ho, and Seol Kyeong-gu are emerging as saviors of Korean movies. From blockbuster hits to cinematographic movies, they aim to revitalize various genres this summer.

Jeon Do-yeon, who received the Cannes Film Festival award for Best Actress for "Secret Sunshine" is working hard to finish filming "A Fine Day".

This movie is about an unemployed, single woman in her thirties who meets an ex-boyfriend and embarks on an adventure for a day.

She acts with Ha Jeong-woo, who is raising stock prices with this year's best movie, "The Chaser".

As soon as filming ends at the end of this month, they will go into the latter half of production.

Park Ji-eun, the marketing team leader of the production company said, "There isn't a definite genre and plans for marketing, but it is certain that you can see this film in theaters in the later half of the year".

Choi Min-sik is done filming "Himalaya-Where the Wind Stops".

He showed his great acting in 2004 in "Old Boy", and this is his first film in three years after "Crying Fist" in 2005.

When a Nepalese factory worker dies in an accident, Choi Min-sik's character goes to a town in the Himalayas to give his family the remains. Director Jeon Soo-il has gone to many international film festivals with movies such as "The Bird Who Stops in the Air".

Team leader Son Min-kyung of Show East, the producing company, revealed that, "Kim Hyeong-suk, who was the music director of "My Sassy Girl", is also involved. It will be premiered in the first half of this year if impossible".

Song Kang-ho, a very influential actor, will be appearing in the Western style blockbuster "The Good, the Bad, and the Weird".

It is an action movie of men who are in lawless Manchuria in the 1930s during Japanese control. It is expected to be this year's best movie, for it features other top stars such as Lee Byeong-Heon and Jeong Woo-seong.

Also, Seol Kyeong-gu will play Kang Chul-jung, and Choi Min-soo will be in "Street of Dreams", a joint production of Korea, America, and Japan.

Movie producers said, "The fact that top stars like Jeon Do-yeon and Song Kang-ho are starring means an audience of at least 1 million. There is great expectation that they will bring a new craze into the stuck movie industry.

Lee Jeong-jae—Jeong Ryeo-won, Lovers in "Mellows"



Lee Jeong-jae and Jeong Ryeo-won will be acting as lovers on the screen.

Ahn Jae-Wook’s Exclusive Album Radio Showcase



The month of April has been rather extraordinary for Ahn Jae-Wook. While working as a radio DJ, many wondered if he would ever return to what many recognized him for – both an actor and singer. He finally makes a triumphant comeback and plans to promote himself in all three areas of entertainment: DJ, singer and actor.

On Tuesday, March 18, it was revealed Ahn Jae-Wook’s new mini-album, ‘For Her’, on the KBS Cool FM radio program, Mr. Radio. The idea of the ‘Radio Showcase’ was not solely the idea of Ahn Jae-Wook, but the innovative planning of the KBS Cool FM’s Mr. Radio production team. The production team surprised Jae-Wook with news of the showcase who was currently preparing his return to the spotlight at the time. Ahn Jae-Wook was in the middle of greeting a guest on the show as usual as the topic slowly moved to the subject of his new album, where then his title song ended up being played on air. As his title song was played live on air, Cha Tae-Hyeon read the reactions of the listeners and also told the story behind his new album.

Jae-Wook’s album will be released in Korea and Japan simultaneously on April 1 along with a selected number of scheduled concert dates. However, fans were treated with his title song from his eagerly anticipated album two weeks ahead of time on his show. Ahn Jae-Wook is currently practicing for his March 29 Saitama Arena 2008 Japan Live “To you” Concert, as he plans to present his new album on the live stage at the same time his album is to be released. Ahn Jae-Wook is expected to put on an intense show, slated for a 12,000-seat arena with a huge stage and state-of-the-art equipment.



After his concert, the SBS mini-series ‘I Love You’, starring Ahn Jae-Wook will begin airing on April 7. The success of the mini-series is said to be guaranteed as “I Love You” will also be aired in Japan as well due to Ahn Jae-Wook’s strong Japanese fan-base.

His voice calls for his past love as a singer, he shows the ups and downs of a newlywed on the TV screen, and entertains with great wit as a radio DJ. Ahn Jae-Wook will begin his “multi-player” career as we await his return in April.

Im Hyun-jung Helps Ahn Jae-wook's K-Pop Comeback

Singer Im Hyun-jung showed her loyalty to friends by helping with the production of Ahn Jae-wook's comeback album.

In 2006, Ahn had been featured in "The Enticing Scent of Love," the title track to Im's 5th album, and when he asked her to help with the production of his album two years later, she postponed her plans to study abroad in the U.S.A. to work with him.

Im not only composed and wrote the lyrics for Ahn's "Is it Good-bye," "Farewell," and "She," the singer also sang in the chorus.

Ahn's mini-album will be released on April 1st. "Is it Good-bye" is his title track, a medium tempo ballad infused with the classic feel of a string quartet. Other songs include the poetic "Farewell" and the rock piece "She" with string instrumentals.

Along with his return to the K-pop stage, Ahn will also star in the TV drama "I Love You."

The singer will be performing live at the Saitama Arena in Japan tomorrow.
