Eugene to Play Second Mother Role

Eugene becomes the mother of a child and a lucky woman who receives the love of three men--Cho Hyun-jae, Jae Hee and Shin Sung-rok--one of whom is the father of the baby.

The new KBS 2TV (Wed./Thurs.) drama "Three Daddies and One Mommy" is about a married couple who receives sperm donations from three of the husband's friends. Although the conception is successful, the wife loses her husband suddenly in an accident. The story continues with the wife and the three friends.

Eugene plays the role of the widowed mother, "Song Na-young," but this isn't her first role as a mother. In 2005, the actress starred in the MBC drama "Wonderful Life" as a young woman who gets pregnant and thrown into married life after a night of bad judgments.

"Back then, the baby wasn't planned, but this time the baby is, so I can be much more of a proud mommy," Eugene said. "In the other drama, my husband didn't love me, but for this one I receive the love of three men, though I do lose my husband."

She laughingly added, "The three men are so wonderful, I could live with all of them!"

"Three Daddies and One Mommy" will fill the time slot of "Hong Gil-dong, the Hero." It is directed by Lee Jae-sang. who produced "Dal-ja's Spring," and written by Cho Myung-joo. who also wrote "The Man of the Vineyard."

Default Sung Ki-yoon and `Mamma Mia!` Reach 500

Sung Ki-yoon and `Mamma Mia!` Reach 500

The musical "Mamma Mia!" which first opened in Korean theaters in 2004, will reach its 500th performance on April 9th.

Amassing over 700,000 tickets sold, the popularity of "Mamma Mia!" lies with the veteran cast which has mostly remained the same since opening day.

Actor Sung Ki-yoon, who plays "Sam," a friend of the lead character "Donna," has never missed a single performance.

Sung debuted in the 1991 musical "Cats." For over a decade, the actor took supporting roles until "Mamma Mia!," when he finally took the spotlight.

When asked if playing the same role for almost 500 performances hasn't become too mundane, the actor answered, "My acting changes a bit with different cast members. As I get closer to "Sam's" age, there's a lot more that I begin to understand [about him]." He added that every performance was different, "like the taste of soybean paste which matures over the years."

Sung admitted that when he was young, he dreamed of becoming a star, but as he continued acting he learned that stardom wasn't an important factor.

"Just because the script looks good, it won't turn into a good production unless the cast and crew works hard. Whichever role I play, I hope my performance will help in its success."

TV star mourns brother killed in Hungry Jacks brawl

THE family of a murdered Korean university student hired security guards to patrol a memorial service yesterday amid fears of revenge attacks targeting the teenager's film-star brother and friends.

Korean teen idol Lee Dong-gun held a photograph of his younger brother Lee Joon-yub as he led a procession of more than than 100 mourners after a requiem mass at the St Johns College chapel, inside the University of Sydney.

The slaying has become headline news in Seoul and threatens to tarnish Sydney's safe image, with the city home to the second largest population of international Korean students outside the UK.

At the Lee family's request, a team of security guards was recruited to patrol the St Johns College chapel and surrounding grounds.

Sources told The Daily Telegraph there were fears of potential retribution following the arrest and charging of two 18-year-old Carlingford youths over the attack at World Square last Thursday.

Pall bearers asked for their identities to be suppressed.

Police yesterday maintained denials there was any link between the slaying and Asian crime gangs.

The killing has become headline news in Korea, where Lee Dong-gun is a household name, with fan websites inundated with condolences and messages of support.

Lee Joon-yub, 19, collapsed and died on the footpath outside World Square after he and a friend became embroiled in a brawl with two teenagers at Hungry Jacks.

The teenager's 22-year-old friend, Song Jung-ho, was also stabbed in the chest and managed to flee to a Korean store before collapsing, the images dramatically captured by surveillance cameras.

He was among mourners at the memorial service after being released from hospital just 24 hours earlier, following surgery to a chest wound.

A Korean priest led the mass with two nuns, who helped support Lee's grieving parents. The heartbroken couple flew into Sydney last week and will return home to Seoul with their son's ashes.

Following the service yesterday morning, Lee Dong-gun - a heart-throb to millions of adolescent Korean girls - emerged choking back tears and clutching a photograph of his brother, while his father wailed in grief.

Korean journalist Ken Lim told The Daily Telegraph Lee family and friends feared they may be targeted by Chinese gang members.

Mr Lee said the slaying had tarnished Australia's image in Seoul. Australia has the second largest population of expatriate Korean students behind that of London.

Mr Lee said more than 25,000 Korean university and English language students lived in Sydney.

"Korean people have a clean image of Australia but this has tarnished it," Mr Lee said.

"People are worried about the security in the city centre where there are gangs."

Default 'GP506’ Puts DMZ Back on Map

'GP506’ Puts DMZ Back on Map

By Lee Hyo-won
Staff Reporter

In his second feature film "GP506,'' director Gong Su-chang ("R-Point'') tells another agonizing tale about military life. But this time, he takes viewers to the demilitarized zone (DMZ). In this bloody mystery thriller, Gong explores the ever-so relevant yet alien area, where dark secrets and ghosts of forgotten histories lurk.

But the film does not deal with the ideological conflict between the Koreas. Rather, it fathoms the raw human instinct for survival.

On the 38th parallel, between the two Koreas, lies the last remnant of the Cold War. "Demilitarized'' zone is perhaps the most improper name for one of the most heavily fortified places on Earth. On the south side is the tightly contained Guard Post 506 (GP506), where armed soldiers stay alert for possible aggressions from the North.

One rainy evening, sergeant major Noh Seong-gyu is called to attend to an emergency. A massacre has occurred within GP506, leaving 20 dead and one unconscious. The 30-year veteran and 20 others are dispatched to investigate the bloodbath.

It's a messy situation. There are no signs of external attack and the corpses are mostly unidentifiable. The entire Defense Ministry is on fire because the commander of GP506, first lieutenant Yu Jeong-u, happens to be the army chief's son. They have less than 10 hours to wrap up the case and bring back Yu's body.

Corporeal Gang Jin-won, found with an axe in hand and now lying in a coma, is naturally the prime suspect. "I will now kill our entire unit. We must all be dead by the time this is discovered,'' says a disturbed-looking Gang in a self-taped video. It seems like another spur of the moment act by a soldier gone mad.

Due to the downpour, the investigation team too becomes trapped in the GP. Noh, however, realizes that there are only 19 dead bodies. The soldiers search the maze-like GP and find lieutenant Yu, alive and traumatized. The 6 a.m. deadline draws near, but Yu refuses to break his silence and tries to escape, violently and to no avail

Yet, as Noh looks into the case, it becomes clear that there is more to it than what appears on the surface. Bizarre happenings had crippled GP506 long before the killings, but critical files have been destroyed and Yu does everything in his power to keep things hidden. Deeper into the night, one ominous secret unravels after another and the 21 investigative soldiers are doomed to face a similar fate.

"GP506'' follows the highly publicized military shooting incidents in recent years. While it takes place over one night, director Gong devoted two years to bring a story he thought of 20 years ago. The movie reveals GP506 for the first time onscreen, and takes us to the DMZ, a place so close, yet so far away. While profoundly ingrained in the heart and soul of Korea, it is also a place that is slipping away from our memories.

No man's land since July 27, 1953, the DMZ remains unspoiled by humans, where rare _ and probably many unknown ― flora and fauna flourish. It's a haven for endangered wildlife, but it's also where unique viruses like the hantavirus are found.

It's a real place but is shrouded with so much mystery that it allows room for fictional fantasies to take flight. While "GP506'' begins like a typical Agatha Christie thriller, it has a touch of "Alien 4'' or "Silent Hill'' as it solely takes place within the claustrophobic labyrinth of GP506.

Veteran actor Chun Ho-jin displays strong charisma and warm humanity as Noh, while heartbreaker Jo Hyun-jae breaks away from his melodramatic Romeo roles to play the agonized Yu. Rising actor Lee Young-hoon shines brightly as Gang, and viewers will be able to sympathize with these young, virile men who are doomed to perish in the confines of forced military service.

This is not recommended for weak stomachs: be prepared for lots of gore and explosive sound effects complete with an actual K2 grenade launcher. In theaters April 3.

TV Anchorwoman Sets Stage for Gender-Equalized Society

By Park Si-soo
Staff Reporter

In most Korean workplaces, the legacy of Confucianism still reigns. Glass ceilings are everywhere. It's not an easy job for a woman to break through the invisible yet very real ceiling in this male-dominant society. Against these odds, a lot of career women are climbing higher. At the forefront of the pack is Kim Ju-ha, 35, anchor and reporter for MBC TV's prime-time news program.

An international organization acknowledged the popular journalist as a "young global leader'' in recognition of her contribution to breaking the norm to set a new role model for females.

Kim, 35, received the honorary title on March 11 from the World Economic Forum (WEF). She has made a name for herself as the first female in Korean broadcasting history to host a news program on her own. The program was MBC's "News Desk,'' and is aired over the weekends.

"I'm honored to be selected as a global leader. But you know it's an undue honor as well,'' Kim said in an interview with The Korea Times.

"One of the reasons behind my winning was, I've heard, I had broken the stereotype on Korean female news anchor and expanded their scope of activity in the media industry,'' she said. "In other words, however, still many Western countries believe that females in Asian countries including Korea do not take a leading role in overall society and live under males' control. That's why my winning is bitter sweet news.''

She said glass ceiling still exists in so many social sectors including the media industry and stressed that females themselves hold the sole key to fighting male-favoring practices.

"I still experience a glass ceiling. But the most significant problem is few female workers venture out to find a breakthrough,'' Kim said. "This indifferent attitude would significantly mar female's social status.''

The veteran broadcaster said had to participate in a variety of tough activities to prove her equality with her male colleagues in every respect.

"In case I was late at work due to my baby at home, I never make it an excuse for my being late. It's because it can hint at a discrimination against me,'' she said.

Calling herself a hard worker who loves achievement, Kim said apart from her current career she wishes to work for a charity foundation and take part in overseas volunteer work to help those suffering from various hardships including malnutrition and poor education.

"There are so many tasks we have to do to get over discriminatory practices against females. I'll do all my best to set a cornerstone to construct a gender-equalized society,'' she said.

Of more than 5,000 candidates ― all aged 40 or younger, WEF chose a total of 245 global leaders for 2008 including 121 business leaders, as well as leaders from government, academia, the media and society at large from 65 countries.

Including Kim, five Koreans and one ethnic Korean were named for this year _ Sarah Chang, violinist; Hur Se-hong, vice president of GS Caltex Corporation's Singapore office; Kim Jin, attorney and chief administrator of Lawyers for a Democratic Society; Ellana Lee, CNN International's managing editor in Asia pacific; and Hines Ward, American football player.

Those selected for this year will gather from next month on a regular basis to serve as a catalyst for initiatives in the global public interest.

Actress Donates Money to Promote Book Reading

By Lee Hyo-won

Actress Moon Geun-young

Actress Moon Geun-young has donated close to 100 million to Morning Reading, a non-profit organization that promotes reading books.

The 20-year-old gave 4.3 million won in 2005, 4 million won in 2006 and 70 million won last year. The popular star of TV drama "Autumn Fairytale'' made the contributions secretly through her mother, Ryu Seon-young, but her good deeds became known when Morning Reading revealed its 2007 account information online.

Founded in 2005, Morning Reading encourages elementary, middle and high school students to read books. Moon became acquainted with the organization when Ryu first bequeathed 1 million won, and has since helped whenever there were budget constraints, said the organization, according to Yonhap News.

"When we first received the gift, we thought it was a mistake because it was too much. Later Ryu introduced herself as a librarian at the national library,'' Han Sang-su, head of Morning Reading, was quoted as saying. "Moon's help was critical to our development.''

Moon is affectionately called "the nation's little sister'' and has appeared in popular movies like "My Little Bride.'' She is also known for continuously supporting other causes such as library-building and helping disadvantaged students in small villages, as well as promoting scholarship programs and securing funds for those with terminal diseases.

Dining With The Stars

A Taste of Celebrity-Owned Restaurants in Seoul

By Cathy Rose A. Garcia, Han Sang-hee
Staff Reporters

In celebrity-crazed Korea, stars can hawk everything from ramyeon to cell phones to vitamin drinks. So it is no wonder that some celebrities have started their own businesses such as clothing brands and restaurants, using "star power'' for their own benefit.

Hallyu superstar Bae Yong-joon, K-pop group Shinhwa, singer Kim Jong-min and actors Lee Jung-jae and Hong Suk-chun are some of the celebrities who have entered the restaurant business.

Some of these stars generate hype for their restaurants by placing their names and photos prominently inside the restaurant. Others play down the star factor and concentrate on the quality of the food and service.

The Korea Times takes a look at some of the celebrity-owned restaurants.

Actors Turned Restaurateurs

If you are a big fan of Bae Yong-joon (star of "Winter Sonata'' and recent hit epic drama, "Taewangsasingi'' (The Four Guardian Gods of the Kings), try visiting his restaurant "Gorilla in the Kitchen'' near Dosan Park.

"Gorilla in the Kitchen'' is all about healthy food. But don't let this scare you because all the food served is not only healthy but also full of taste, color and aroma.

One interesting feature of the place is the menu. Unlike plain menus that show the name of the dish and the price, "Gorilla in the Kitchen'' lists the ingredients, the calories and even the nutritional contents of the dish. They also offer two size choices of the same meal: human and gorilla. The gorilla contains a little more of everything, so those who up for a big meal might as well choose the gorilla.

"Gorilla in the Kitchen'' does not use butter and cream in their recipes, and also does not have any deep fried recipes. Most of the dishes are seasoned with various herbs and each offer a distinctive taste.

Another interesting service is their expert teams that help visitors choose the right food. There is the Chef Team who take care of the taste and styling of the menu, the Nutrition Team who look after the nutritional balance, and a Trainer Team that offers tips on how to keep your body healthy with the right exercise.

The restaurant is right across from the entrance to Dosan Park. Opening hours are 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. For more information visit www.gorillakitchen.co.kr (English and Korean) or call (02) 3442-1688.

Actor Lee Jung-jae also owns a restaurant, but it is a franchise of the popular Italian chain Il Mare. It's located in the Daehangno area.

Movie buffs might remember Lee starred in the Korean film "Il Mare'' (Siworae) with Jun Ji-hyun, which was turned into a Hollywood film "The Lake House.'' To find Lee's Il Mare restaurant, go to Hyehwa Station Line 4, Exit 1 and you'll find Il Mare located behind McDonald's. Call (02) 744-8697.

K-pop & Food

Korean pop group Shinhwa endorsed the fried chicken chain Kyochon a few years ago, and ended up opening a Kyochon chicken franchise restaurant in Rodeo Street in Apgujeong, southern Seoul.

The restaurant is quite small, and decorated with autographed posters of Shinhwa members and even their framed handprints on the walls.

There is not much variety on the menu, which includes the Kyochon original chicken (8,000 won for small, 15,000 won for big servings), French fries, salad and cheese sticks. There is even "Shinhwa chicken,'' which is a very spicy version of the original Kyochon chicken.

Because of Shinhwa's popularity around Asia, it is no surprise there are always some foreign fans dining at the restaurant.

Angel Mahinay, a 23-year old fan from the Philippines, said that she already knew about Kyochon chicken from watching the Shinhwa commercials on the Internet.

While visiting Seoul last week, Mahinay and her friend checked out the Shinhwa restaurant to try the chicken. "I saw the Kyochon chicken commercial and I really wanted to eat the yummy chicken. Now that I have tried it, I can say the chicken is really as good as it looked on the commercial,'' she said.

To get there, leave exit 2 of Apgujeong station, Line 3 and walk towards the direction of the Galleria Department Store. After around 700 meters, turn right at the Hana Bank, walk a few meters and you'll find the Shinhwa Kyochon Chicken restaurant on your right.

Even K-pop music industry giant SM Entertainment is getting into the restaurant business. SM, whose acts include TVXQ, BoA and Super Junior, will open "EverySing'' a restaurant with karaoke on Apgujeong's Rodeo Street.

The karaoke will include songs by SM artists, using the actual music. "EverySing'' is expected to be popular among young K-pop fans. SM Entertainment is also planning on opening more branches in Korea, as well as Southeast Asia and Japan.

Kim Jong-min, a member of dance group "Koyote,'' also has a restaurant near Nonhyeon-dong called "Eori Beori.'' The name literally means silly, and is known to be Kim's nickname among friends.

The main menu is "gob-chang,'' or small intestines of cattle. They normally come with the restaurant's specialty sauce, which is quite spicy, but if you don't want the spicy flavor, ask the servers to skip the sauce. The intestines are cut into small bite-pieces and are broiled over a charcoal fire, which gives them a smoky taste. The dishes cost from 18,000 won to 20,000 won.

To get there, leave exit 2 of Nonhyeon station, Line 7 and walk straight until you see H Pharmacy. Turn left and walk straight again until you find it on your right. Opening hours are 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. For more information call 1577-0292 (Korean).

Hong's Restaurants

Actor Hong Suk-chun already has three restaurants in Itaewon, namely Our Place, My China and My Thai. All of the restaurants are within walking distance of the Hamilton Hotel.

There is little indication these restaurants are owned by Hong, except for some portraits of himself on one side of the wall at My Thai. Hong has appeared in several films and TV shows, but may be best known among Koreans as the first celebrity to publicly admit he was a homosexual.

My Thai, as the name suggests, offers Thai cuisine. The menu is fairly simple, with the usual Tom Yum Goong soup, Thai curry and rice dishes. There are not a lot of appetizers, except for the vegetable spring rolls served with the typical sweet and spicy Thai sauce.

The Pad Thai noodles (12,000 won) are served covered in a thin egg omelet, and small scoops of chili powder and crushed peanuts for additional flavor. The Khao Pad Gai (8,000 won) is fried rice with pieces of chicken breast, served with a chili-laden fish sauce and cucumber slices. A Thai dessert called Rummitnumkati, tapioca pudding in coconut milk, is a sweet way to end a spicy meal.

Overall, My Thai offers simple and good Thai-style food, but if you're looking for authentic Thai food, you should look elsewhere. To go to My Thai, go to Itaewon station Line 6, exit 2 and turn left at the first corner. My Thai is located on the left side. For more information call (02) 794-8090.

Hong's first restaurant is Our Place, a New York fusion restaurant and a sky garden bar where you can enjoy a different view of Itaewon's busy streets. Our Place offers pasta, steak, salad and seafood dishes.

To reach Our Place, go to Itaewon Station Line 6, Exit 3 and go to the building at the corner on the right. The restaurant is on the 6th and 7th floor.

TLA takes "Epitaph" to North America

Written by Carole Horst
Thursday, 27 March 2008

Philadelphia-based distrib TLA Releasing has nabbed all North American rights to critically-acclaimed Korean horror hit “Epitaph,” the directorial debut of the Jung brothers.

TLA VP of acquisitions Jennifer Arndt-Jones picked up the rights from South Korea’s Studio 2.0, which was repped by international business topper Eun-Young Choi in the deal, at the recently wrapped Hong Kong FilMart.

A re-invention of the horror genre, “Epitaph” unfolds in a hospital in World War II Korea and stars Kim Bo Kyung (“Blue Sky”), Kim Tae Woo (“Woman on the Beach”) and Jin Goo (“Dirty Carnival”) The Jung brothers were honored with the New Director Award from the 2007 Pusan Film Critics. Pic will unspool in Gotham’s New Directors/New Films fest and April’s Philadelphia Film Festival. It’s scheduled to hit theaters later in the year under the Danger After Dark label.

Default Hyeon Bin, Screen Comeback with movie "I Am Happy"
Original Korean Article: Mydaily 2008-03-24 14:31:58

========================================
Hyeon Bin, Screen Comeback with movie "I Am Happy"

After two years, Hyeon Bin will be coming back to the screen since "A Millionaire's First Love". He wasn't involved in anything after drama "Snow Queen".

On the 20th, he posted a message at his fan café titled, 'You've waited a long time', revealing his comeback. "I'm really busy these days. I've been trying to prepare a good work for our family, but it's taking longer than I thought". He revealed the reason why he hasn't been coming out a lot.

He also said, "I'm going to be filming a movie from next week. It's a movie called "I Am Happy", and many great actors come out. I'm also working with a great director and a good staff".

He said, "I think it's something that I can be born again with, and something I can learn from. I'll try my best to show you a different side of me. I'm thankful to my fans for supporting me, and I hope I can show you great results".

Director Yoon Jong-chan, who has become famous through "Sorum" and "Blue Swallow", will be working on this movie. Hyeon Bin will show a totally different side of him.

I have to start watching Snow Queen =)

Although I Am Happy is the title of the movie, I've read in another forum that it has a very sad plot. Can't wait!

Not to get your hopes up, but…

Won Bin (Taegukgi, Autumn Fairy Tale), may be, possibly, hopefully, making his long-awaited comeback!

Finally! (Maybe.)

He’s been out of the spotlight for nearly four years (two of which were due to his military service) and hasn’t seemed in a particular hurry to return to the spotlight after his last movie, 2004’s My Brother, or his 2006 army discharge. All he’s done in the interim is act as a special representative for Unicef.

At long last, though, his management has let it be known that he’s preparing to make an acting comeback. As a favorite among many a lady viewer, there have been some rumors here and there about taking a role in a television drama by autumn, but his management explained: “He’s not considering dramas at all. But he’s currently looking at several possible film projects. He plans to return in a movie rather than a drama series.”

Although nothing has been set in stone yet, the possibility is high that we might be able to see Won Bin in a comeback film as early as the latter half of this year. It’s not enough to hold your breath over, but I think we can set our dials to “cautiously optimistic.”

Eric’s last pre-military project
March 25th, 2008 // by javabeans

Eric will be enlisting for his mandatory military service by September of this year, but first he’ll eke out one more project — a sageuk drama.

According to his management, Eric felt a strong pull to the script — a “comedic heroic sageuk” already drawing cursory comparisons to Hong Gil Dong — and is currently in preparations for the part. The series, KBS2’s Monday-Tuesday drama Choi Kang Chil Woo (a pun on the character’s name also meaning “strongest Chil Woo” or “Chil Woo the best”), will be directed by PD Park Man Young (Vineyard Man) and premieres on June 9. The story places him in Joseon times as the titular Kang Chil Woo, an ordinary and lower-tier government official by day, and secret kickass assassin by night.

I’ve always thought Eric looked completely modern, so I’m curious to see how well he dons traditional garb and acts in a historical drama. Then again, the plot and description sounds like it’s not going to be sticking too closely to conventional sageuk structure, so maybe his modern looks will fit right in.

His last acting role was in last year’s Que Sera Sera, after which he took a break from acting and resumed activities with Shinhwa. Speaking of whom, Shinhwa gives their tenth-anniversary concert(s) in Seoul on the 29th and 30th.
