Default Actress Shin Eun Kyung - From tomboy to temptress

From tomboy to temptress

By Chang May Choon
June 26, 2007

KOREAN actress Shin Eun Kyung's male-bashing days are over.

Looking more feminine than ever, she is grabbing eyeballs by showing off her slim figure instead.

Best known as the hot-tempered tomboy who bashed up men in the 2001 hit movie My Wife Is A Gangster, Eun Kyung returned to the gogglebox earlier this month as a sexy fashion magazine editor in the drama Bad Couple.

One day she decides to become a single mother and sets out to find the best sperm donor. Her ultimate target? A botany professor played by Ryu Soo Yeong of 18, 29 fame.

Eun Kyung, 34, told Yonhap News Agency that she had once toyed with the idea of single motherhood.

'When I was in my 20s, all I could think about was how to develop my career,' she said.

'Maybe I'd never be able to sustain a good relationship, let alone get married. But I was sure I wanted to have a child.'

But the vivacious actress married an executive from her management agency when she turned 30 in 2003. Their son was born a year later.

Eun Kyung has since stayed out of the limelight, except to film the 2005 action movie Diary Of June.

Fans may adore her as the celluloid male-terrorising gangster, but in real life, she is known to be a model housemaker and an excellent cook.

Bad Couple, which is showing in Korea, marks her showbiz comeback.

It is also her first drama in eight years, and it seems she will stop at nothing to prove she still has audience appeal.

For one thing, she reportedly lost more than 5kg for her role. When asked, she said it was the 'natural' result of quitting smoking and drinking.

Eun Kyung, who debuted as a child star in 1987, also donned a lacy nightgown in a seduction scene that reportedly got the TV crew worried.

The audience response has been encouraging so far, with the drama scoring a 11.8 rating - 1 per cent higher than Choi Ji Woo's mega budget Air City, which shares the same weekend time slot.

Her curves attract attention abroad

By Chang May Choon
June 26, 2007

DESPITE keeping a low profile in the past two years, Korean actress Kim So-yeon still managed to dazzle at the opening of the Shanghai International Film Festival recently.

-- Pictures: REUTERS, AP

Clad in a cleavage-revealing gown that hugged her curves, no less.

Back in Korea, the 27-year-old star of Tsui Hark's wuxia flick Seven Swords generated buzz by posting new pictures of herself on her personal homepage last week.

Many fans were pleasantly surprised and gushed over her long, slender legs, said The Chosun Ilbo.

Others lamented it has been a long time since she last appeared on screen.

Apparently, So Yeon is still looking at scripts to find a suitable comeback project, after her last TV drama Autumn Shower flopped in 2005.

KOREAN actor Lee Joon Ki, 25, has said 'yes' to acclaimed Chinese director Chen Kaige.

The duo met at the Shanghai International Film Festival recently.

Kaige reportedly asked Joon Ki if he would like to film a movie with him in China.

Joon Ki's response: 'Definitely, if the script and role are suitable.'

Later, he told reporters that he 'envies' how Korean actor Jang Dong Gun got to act in Kaige's The Promise.

Joon Ki added that he also hopes to work with the Chinese director one day, 'even if it's a small supporting role'.

The King And The Clown star is immensely popular in China, boasting 300,000 members in his fan club.

He also received the Overseas Star Award at the Shanghai International Film Festival, together with Hollywood star Sharon Stone.

Default [Talk of the town] Stealing words?

[Talk of the town] Stealing words?

Korean TV dramas, especially the highly popular ones on SBS-TV, keep getting sucked into the quicksand of plagiarism. “The War of Money,” currently one of the most popular TV dramas, has been accused of plagiarism by novelist Heo Yun-ho, who wrote “The Money War.” Heo has filed a complaint in a Seoul court, asking for the TV drama to be taken off the air. Also, “The Woman of My Man,” which won an audience rating of almost 40 percent, is accused of plagiarizing “That Woman, Ok-hui,” a TV drama by Ryu Gyeong-ok.

“The War of Money” is about a loan shark-turned-stock analyst taking revenge against another loan shark who caused his father to commit suicide. Heo, who used to be a stock analyst himself, said that he wrote his book in 2003 and accuses the TV drama of having an almost identical storyline. Meanwhile, “The Woman of My Man,” is about a man who has an extramarital affair with his wife’s best friend. Ryu said that it is very similar to her work, “That Woman, Ok-hui.”

Kim Su-hyun, star TV writer of “The Woman of My Man,” said, “I am so mortified that I just cannot do anything.” The producers of “The War of Money” said that Heo is trying to attract attention for his novel by making the false charges.

Default Shinhwa Members Go Solo This Summer

Shinhwa Members Go Solo This Summer

By Cathy Rose A. Garcia
Staff Reporter

It's been over a year since Shinhwa, one of the longest running Korean boy bands, has released an album. While younger boy groups like TVXQ, Super Junior, SS501 and Big Bang have been getting all the attention, Shinhwa members are concentrating on solo activities.

This summer, three Shinhwa members, Kim Dong-wan, Lee Min-woo and Shin Hye-sung are set to release their solo albums. The three singers are counting on loyal Shinhwa fans to support their solo efforts, but are also attempting to attract new fans with a more mature image.

Lee, who was the first member to go solo in 2003, will hold a showcase concert for his third album "Explore M'' on July 8. His album will be released on July 10.

Adopting the stage name M for his solo activities, Lee has already released two albums with an R&B style. Lee seems to be the most serious when it comes to music, having written and produced songs for other K-pop artists such as Jewelry. He established his own music company M Rising Entertainment, and expressed interest in nurturing new artists.

Last Sunday, he performed as the opening act for international pop star Christina Aguilera's concert in Seoul. Lee has already held a concert in Japan, and has plans of touring China, Vietnam, Thailand and Singapore this year.

Shin, also known as Shinhwa's lead singer, is scheduled to release his second solo album in August. His album is again expected to include mostly romantic ballads, similar to his debut album "Love of May,'' released in 2005.

There is already much interest in Shin's first solo concert on Aug. 11 and 12 at Olympic Hall, Olympic Park. Advance reservations for concert tickets have been sold out. Shin is also planning on holding concerts in Japan later this year.

Kim is making his debut as a solo performer, with the release of his album "Kimdongwan Is'' on June 28. In contrast to his boyish image in the past, he now looks more masculine with a moustache and a leaner look.

Shinhwa members are also helping Kim on his debut album. Kim has a duet with Shin, while Andy is featured on another track. Lee also composed the song "My Love,'' which also features rapping by Eric.

Kim has been known more as an actor, getting good reviews for his acting in the SBS drama "The Person I Love'' and KBS drama "Goodbye Sadness.''

While Lee, Shin and Kim are concentrating on their music career, other Shinhwa members seem to be lying low. Andy has formed his own company ND (New Dream), while Jun Jin had released a single album last December. Eric had recently finished the MBC drama "Que Sera Sera.''

However, fans of Shinhwa will have to wait a little longer for the members to reunite. Shinhwa's 9th album will be released by the end of the year.

Hallyu Romantic Festival 2007 Sweeps Japan

The Hallyu Romantic Festival 2007, which opened in Japan June 23, has drawn the spotlight from the Japanese media.

Fuji TV covered the festival in-depth on June 25, lauding it as a gathering of the top Korean stars and a "dream show."

Influential Japanese dailies also reported on the festival, with the Asahi Shimbun calling actor Ji Jin-hee a "trustworthy man" and the "ideal man for working women." The daily also conducted an in-depth interview with actor Cho In-sung, which will be published in July.

Japanese fans also showed great interest in the festival, giving it rave reviews on major portal Web sites. Some wrote on Yahoo! Japan that the festival was a dream come true because they could see so many top Korean stars at once. Others said the four-hour festival ended too soon and that they had the time of their lives at the event. Japanese fans also praised Korean stars for showing consideration for the audience by descending from the stage to mingle with the audience during the finale of the festival.

Default Actor can’t hide his truthful eyes - Hwang Jung-min
========================================
(source: JoongAng Daily June 27, 2007)
Actor can’t hide his truthful eyes

Actor Hwang Jung-min, known for his versatile images. By Park Jong-geun

When Hwang Jung-min, 38, accepted the best actor award at the Blue Dragon Film Festival for his performance in “You’re My Sunshine” many were moved when he said: “All I did was add a spoon to a dinner table that had already been prepared by others.”

This summer Hwang is back with a different kind of film, designed to scare and horrify , as he stars in the thriller “Psychopath,” directed by Shin Tae-ra.

The film, which will be released tomorrow, is based on a novel by Japanese author Yusuke Kishi. Hwang plays Chun Jun-oh, who works for an insurance company and fights against a psychopath while investigating the mysterious suicide of a 7-year-old boy.

The JoongAng Ilbo met with Hwang to get an insider’s look at the film.

“I always wondered why Korea has no movies like ‘Dressed to Kill,’ ‘The Silence of the Lambs,’ or ‘Seven,’” said Hwang. “On a hot summer’s day, people want movies like these to give them a chill but, until now, Korean films weren’t able to do this.”

However, while making his first thriller, Hwang understood why there are few Korean films of this type. “This genre of film is one that needs to be accurate in depicting emotions.”

“Psycho Path,” Hwang Jung-min’s latest film on theaters.

Hwang said that it is difficult for viewers to absorb every aspect of the emotions that the film originally intended to deliver. “The goal is for my acting to make people shudder and feel a chill in the very marrow of their bones,” said Hwang.

Given the responsibility of chilling the viewers, filming was not easy. “Confronting the psychopath for the first time, I had to act as if my blood vessels were going to burst,” said Hwang.

When asked about the character Chun, Hwang says, “He is not very attractive; he doesn’t strike people at first. However, he has the power to make viewers react instantly to the horrific scenes.

“Besides, when I select scenarios, I look at the overall storyline rather than the character itself,” said Hwang. He said that he even imagined acting as a passerby in the movie “Billy Elliot.”

Hidden behind this character is Hwang’s effort to continuously bring out the character’s inner workings.

“When shooting a scene on a roller coaster ride, I imagined that the viewer was sitting right next to me,” said Hwang. “It would be wrong if only I, Chun, was terrified and the person next to me was not.”

Starring in various musicals and plays in Daehangno including “Subway Line No. 1” in 1994, Hwang’s debut film was “The Waikiki Brothers,” in 2001. Then he appeared in prominent films like “A Good Lawyer’s Wife,” “You’re My Sunshine,” and “Bloody Tie,” all of which required him to play diverse characters.

“It is very important that you don’t get too absorbed in yourself,” said Hwang. “You must always remember that there is another person watching the scene. Maintaining objectivity is important.”

Hwang emphasizes three elements: the audience, the scenario and the actor.

Of the scar on his nose, he mentioned that not many have noticed it, even though he doesn’t cover it with make up. “This proves that people look into an actors’ eyes; the eyes don’t lie and it shows whether an actor is sincere or not,” said Hwang.

Along with Hwang’s emphasis on sincerity, he also mentioned two tearful scenes. “Actors cry by positioning themselves in the character and, secondly, by thinking about their own sad experiences,” said Hwang.

He prefers the former to the latter, since empathy, to an actor, is important.

In fact, Hwang was involved in one episode where there were almost too many emotions: He was in real fix when shooting “You Are My Sunshine” because his heart felt like he was actually falling in love with actress Jeon Do-yeon, his lover in the story.

“In that movie, I had to be in a tense relationship with my co-actors so I stayed away from them because Kang Shin-il and Yu Seon are both my close friends.” However, Hwang said that the tense atmosphere was relieved once the shooting was over.

In the fall, Hwang stars in a romantic film “Happiness,” directed by Heo Jin-ho and will be shooting “A Man Once a Superman,” directed by Jeong Yoon-cheol. On average, Hwang stars in three to four films a year and some say that he does too many. In response, Hwang says, “I breathe only when I act.”

[TV Review]English and soju can be a combustible mix

“A Picnic to Seoul,” a comedy show where English’s puns are key. [SBS-TV]

Speaking English in public can lead to some hostile stares, a verbal dispute or even a physical scuffle. At least that’s what happened to me and my friends recently. All of us looked Korean and we were talking in a mix of English and Korean at a downtown bar. Then we encountered some hostile gazes from a neighboring table.

A man was giving us a hard, hostile stare that was full of anger and it made us flinch. We stopped talking and asked him why he was giving us such a look. His voice dripped with hostility as he said, “Do you think it makes you look good to speak in a foreign language?”

Well, “looking good” was far from what we were looking for, as we were simply at a loss for the right Korean words to describe what was on our minds. Under the influence of soju, he suddenly stood up and came at us, which led to an argument and a small scrimmage. His friends dragged him out of the bar and told us, by way of apology, that English has been a major obstacle in his life.

As he threw his card at us, I could see that his surname was Kim and that he was a member of a civic group that did not apparently require English skills. It was not even the end of the night, but I saw another party at a table nearby leaving at the same time, saying, “We should have gone to Itaewon instead, if we knew we would hear English here as well.”

I am not complaining. Rather, I am contemplating what English meant to my fellow Korean drinkers.

My friends and I were just casually chitchatting, but it must have reminded them of the pressure of learning English, which has weighed heavily on their lives. I have the freedom to speak in English, but they had the freedom not to listen to me. Obviously, you, dear reader, are an object of great envy for them, because you are reading this column in English.

That little incident left a strange aftertaste, as I could not help but wonder why English has become such a major factor in Korean society.

And I was not the only one with the same thought. The SBS-TV investigative news program “Geugeosi Algosipda,” which can be roughly translated as “We Want to Find that Out,” focused on English last Saturday.

Titled “What English Means to Koreans,” the show delved into various aspects of how English has become a scary monster to many in this country. It showed a straight-A college student who could not get her diploma because her TOEIC score was below the school’s standard and a Seoul district governor who was urging owners of shops to change their signboards to be bilingual.

After a shower of sad glimpses of Korea where “English means power and English speakers are admired only for the fact that they can speak the language fluently,” the show’s host ended up saying, “Dear viewers, I hope today’s show helped to lift the heavy burden on your shoulders regarding English.”

What language you speak and how it has been an important factor when it comes to judging other people we can see in the word “linguicism,” which has been coined recently and is used in the same way as sexism or racism. Reflecting the pressure to learn English, the language has constantly been an object of comedy on popular TV shows. One of the most recent examples would be a segment from “Utchatsa” (People Seeking Laughter) on SBS-TV, called “A Picnic to Seoul.”

The show is about two hillbilly characters who are applying for a job where the major criterion is whether they can speak standard Korean, like most citizens of Seoul.

In one segment the two main characters find themselves at a loss for English words and make random puns instead.

Well, I hope that Mr. Kim from my recent bar scrimmage will laugh at the segment and free himself from his obsession with a foreign language.

Korean horror takes top B.O. spot
'Black House' creeps past Hollywood hits

By DARCY PAQUET

SEOUL -- For the first time in eight weeks, South Korea cinema has turned out a local hit with horror title "Black House" taking $3.6 million from Thursday to Sunday on 353 screens for the No. 1 box office spot.

Pic is an adaptation of a novel by Japanese writer Yusuke Kishi about an insurance agent who suspects one of his clients of fraud and murder. Co-financed by Japanese studio Kadokawa, "Black House" marks a return to inhouse production for Korean major CJ Entertainment.

Meanwhile Hollywood pic "Ocean's Thirteen" passed the 1 million ticket mark in its second week for a $7 million cume, and "Shrek the Third" landed in third place with $17.6 million in three weeks.

Only other local debut was Gina Kim's Korean-U.S. co-production "Never Forever," which screened in competition at Sundance. It opened at No. 9 with $320,000.

Local pics will have a tough ride next weekend — Michael Bay's "Transformers" opens wide on Thursday.

Korean cinema still has a long way to go to turn around what many consider a highly disappointing year. According to the Korean Film Council's online box office information system, local films have a 47.7% market share for the year to date, compared to more than 60% for last year as a whole.

Highest grossing local film is CJ's "Voice of a Murderer" with $22 million, whereas last year saw hits on the scale of "The Host" ($90 million), "King and the Clown" ($84 million), "Tazza: The High Rollers" ($47 million) and "My Boss My Teacher" ($42 million).

Monster Reigns at Korean's Baeksang Awards

2007-04-26

After winning the Best Film award at the First Asian Film Awards earlier this year in Hong Kong, Korean monster movie "The Host" has gone on to scoop the Best Film award at the 43rd Baeksang Awards in South Korea on Wednesday.

"The War of Flowers," a film adaptation of a comic book with the same name, also won two big prizes - the Daesang Film Big Prize and Best Director for Choi Dong-hoon.

Ryu Seung-beom and former Miss Korea Yeom Jeong-ah were also named Best Actor and Actress.

The awards also named Jeong Ji-hoon, better known by his stage name Rain, as the Best New Actor for his work in "I'm A Cyborg, But That's Okay."

Best New Actress went to "The Fox Family"'s Park Si-yeon.

The awards also honored a slew of artists working in the country's extremely popular TV drama industry.

TV series "Jumong" took home the Daesang Big Prize in the drama category.

Kim Myung-min was named the Best TV Actor for his work in "Behind the White Tower," while "Fall in Love" star Son Ye-jin was the Best TV Actress.

Despite receiving four nominations, the much-touted "Hwang Jin-yi" failed to receive any prizes.

"Marathon" Sweeps Baeksang Award

"Marathon," the touching story of an autistic man and his passion for running, garnered the Grand Prize, Best Screenplay (Chung Yun-chul) and Outstanding Male Performance (Cho Seung-woo) awards at the 41st Baeksang Arts Award Ceremony, held at the Little Angels Performing Arts Hall in Seoul Friday. The top honor in the television category went to SBS drama "Paris Lovers." The drama’s leading lady Kim Jung Eun walked away with the Outstanding Female Performance award while Soh Ji-sup’s performance in KBS miniseries "I’m Sorry, I Love You" earned him the corresponding prize. Kim Hye-soo won the top acting prize in the movie category for her role in the sexy psychological thriller "Hypnotized." The Best Director Award went to Park Hong-sik for "My Mother, The Mermaid." The late Chang Key-young, founder of The Hankook Ilbo, sister paper of The Korea Times, established the award in 1964. Chang’s pen name was Baeksang.
