Yonsama Bae Yong Joon
winner of the popularity polls in Japan

[mydaily – Kang Eun Jin Reporter]

Yonsama Bae Yong Joon is still popular in Japan

Sma Station, which is a popular program on Asahi TV in Japan, recently conducted the votes for the most popular Hallyu actor. Bae Yong Joon got the most votes and became the winner. It is remarkable that he passed other Hallyu actors and took first place even though he didn’t work officially since the drama Winter Sonata and April Snow.

Sma Station, lead by Katori Shingo, who is the member of the best idol group SMAP, isn’t formal like general news and is a popular program in Japan with unique contents and materials which anybody can be approached easily.

On that day, Hisamoto Masami attended this program as a guest. She is well known as the Hallyu drama lover and was a winner of ‘vote for a favorite woman talent’ conducted by Japan Nihon TV in 2004. She said, “I didn’t watch the Hallyu drama in the beginning, but I started to watch Winter Sonata with my friend’s recommendation and became a passionate Hallyu drama fan since then.”

Lee Byung Hun, Jang Dong Gun, Kwon Sang Woo, Won Bin are respectively followed by Bae Yong Joon.

The vote began at 11 pm when the program started and finished when the program ended. The method was that the name of a favorite star and the reason why was sent by email and processed.

Meanwhile Bae Yong Joon is in full swing in filming the drama TWSSG.

A young actress becomes a mature gisaeng

June 16, 2007

Hwang Jin-i, played by Song Hye-gyo. Provided by the producer

Hwang Jin-i, a woman of erotic style and flamboyant intelligence, was excellent at writing poems and drawing and she ridiculed the patriarchal society in which she lived.

Any actress would want to play Hwang Jin-I - the famous gisaeng is one of the most colorful characters in Korean history, along with Chang Hee-bin and Seong Chun-hyang.

Many movies, dramas and novels have dealt with the life of Hwang Jin-i. Directors have sought out only the most beautiful actresses to play the role.

Do Geum-bong, an actress famed for her sensual body, was the first to play the gisaeng in modern film, starring in “Hwang Jin-i” in 1957.

After that, Kang Sook-hee starred in “The Life of Hwang Jin-i (1961),” and Kim Ji-mi followed her in “Hwang Jin-i’s First Love (1969).” Kim Ji-mi had a Westernized rather than a traditional Korean appearance.

Chang Mi-hee in “Hwang Jin-i (1986),” directed by Bae Chang-ho, was the most outstanding Hwang Jin-i character, since she was not portrayed as an enchantress or a prostitute as in the earlier movies. She was depicted as a wandering artist looking for freedom.

On TV, Ha Ji-won took on the mantle of Lee Mi-sook, who starred in a historical drama, “Women Powers” (MBC, 1982) when she took up the role in “Hwang Jin-i” (KBS) last year. The scenario of the drama was based on Kim Tak-hwan’s novel.

The drama emphasized the demanding training required of a gisaeng during the Joseon Dynasty.

And now Song Hye-gyo has brought us the most recent version of the famous female.

In “Hwang Jin-i”, a movie that was released last week, Song became the most powerful and erotic Hwang Jin-i that has ever existed. Chang Yoon-hyeok, who stirred our feelings with “Contact,” has directed “Hwang Jin-i,” and the story is based on the novel by North Korean author Hong Seok-joong.

The new “Hwang Jin-i” is far from ordinary; it is the first movie to dramatize a North Korean novel and the production budget exceeded 10 billion won ($10 million.) It also includes scenic views of Mount Kumgang.

The film’s sound bites - such as “I laughed at the world” and “A woman from 21st century who lived in the 16th” - have attracted plenty of attention. The new movie seems so cool that it could save the Korean movie industry from its current slump.

The strict social class system does not matter to Hwang Jin-i in this new movie.

Until she discovers her true origins, she enjoys her life as an upper class woman.

However, when the truth is uncovered and people find out that she was born to a maid, people try to evict her from the family.

Then, to everybody’s surprise, she turns herself into a gisaeng.

This highly educated gisaeng makes fun of the yangban, the men from the upper class, who try to patronize her. She made a decision to be a gisaeng by herself and chose her first lover, a manservant called Nomi (played by You Ji-tae). He is also a revolutionary character with dreams of a utopian society. In this film Hwang Jin-i comes across a rebellious woman resisting social stratification.

However, the movie is a little monotonous. Even though it deals with the intricate life of Hwang Jin-i, the movie has little tension and the plot tends to flag. The 140-minute running time tends to exhaust viewers.

Neither the personality clashes or the tearful romance is powerful enough to touch viewers’ hearts.

The plot is dramatic for a good movie, but the realization ends up leaving much to be desired, possibly because it was too faithful to the original book.

Despite the huge scale and dazzling visuals, the movie fails to be a masterpiece. It focuses too much on the radical and provocative aspects of the new Hwang Jin-i. However, Song Hye-gyo’s first role as a historical figure is successful enough. Instead of a petite girl we are used to seeing, she makes a good transformation to a mature woman. Fashion designer Guho was in charge of the costumes and Won Il wrote the music. No one under 14 admitted.

Top Producer Talks About Three-Star Hat-Trick

Next Wednesday, the stellar triumvirate of Song Kang-ho, Lee Byung-hun and Jung Woo-sung gather to start filming “The Good, the Bad and the Weird.” Simply by starring the three stars, the movie is generating huge advance buzz. The Chosun Ilbo spoke to Director Kim Ji-woon (43).

"As a movie fan, I have certain wishes. Why are there no movies in Korea like “Ocean's Eleven” that gather an ensemble of superstars? There should be at least one such movie in my generation, never mind popularity and ambition.”

That begs the question how difficult it was. The audience may be delighted, but persuading the stars must have been a headache for Kim. Every star, after all, has a tendency to think of him- or herself as the center of the universe. Catering to the emotional needs of three solar systems can’t have been easy.

From left: Song Kang-ho, Jung Woo-sung and Lee Byung-hun

Even though the three actors are reportedly close, Kim seems reluctant to talk about the point. After some thought, he puts it this way: Lee Byung-hun is “the most questioning actor in Korea”, Song Kang-ho is “Korea's super actor” and Jung Woo-sung has “ambitions as a director.” “Of course it wasn’t easy. For many stars acting is only possible if they understand the character, but that’s especially true for Lee Byung-hun.” How much so? Kim smiles. "Byung-hun may be unhappy to hear this, but for example, if I convince him to play the character on April 1, he calls on April 3 saying he doesn’t understand. If I convince him again the next day, he calls on April 5 saying some part is strange." Kim adds, "As you can see, he is stubborn about his parts."

Even though they call each other brothers -- in order of Song, Lee and Jung -- there is a certain tension. But Kim is undeterred. "I’m excited about the prospect of seeing Song, Lee and Jung Woo-sung in the same frame,” he says. “I’m going to give the audience a picture and a story they have never seen in Korean movies."

Screening Of "Hotelier" In Japan Attracts 2,000

The love for Korean star Bae Yong Joon does not fade for his Japanese fans.

On the 14th, the last day of the screening event for the 2001 drama "Hotelier" which starred Bae Yong Joon, about 2,000 people gathered to make it a success.

This event was planned alongside the broadcast of the Japanese remake of "Hotelier" through Asahi TV. The screening started on April 12th, and was held every Thursday for ten weeks at the Tokyo Doho Cinemas Roppongi Hills for two episodes each.

The sponsorship secured five screens for the final day of the screening in consideration of its success and popularity due to record sales day after day. But since all five screenings were sold out in just two hours, three more screens were barely procured and a total of eight screenings were confirmed.

The additional advance purchase tickets were sold out in just under an hour, which displayed the unchanging love of the 2,000 fans from all over Japan for "Yon-sama."

'Men of Gung' become Rivals in a New Drama Series

The two rivals who fought for the king’s throne and the love of Yoon Eun-hye in last year’s popular MBC drama ‘Gung (Princess Hour)’ which ended this March, have been cast in two new upcoming drama series, but are now competing for air time to attract more TV viewers because the dramas is on at the same time.

In the drama ‘Goong,’ Ju Ji Hun and Kim Jeong Hoon portrayed different kinds of roles, attracting many female fans in their teens to their thirties. The two actors will be competing to win the hearts of more female viewers in their individual dramas.

Ju Ji Hun comes back to the TV screen on Wednesday and Thursday’s drama ‘Mawang (Devil)’ (director Park Chan Hong, writer Kim Ji Woo), which airs on KBS 2 while Kim Jeong Hoon’s return can be seen on Wednesday and Thursday’s drama ‘Manyeo Yuhui’ (director Jeon Ki Sang, writer Kim Won Jin) which airs on SBS. Both dramas began on March 21st.

Ju Ji Hun plays a lawyer in ‘Mawang’ who is a rival of Eom Taewoong, trying to win the affections of Shin Minah. This casted role will allow Ju Ji Hun’s charisma to shine, which is already anticipated by many of his female fans. Ju Ji Hun will have a new image in this drama that will enhance himself as an actor.

Kim Jeong Hoon, on the other hand, plays the ambitious doctor in ‘Manyeo Yuhui,’ and like Ju Ji Hun in ‘Mawang’ Kim Jeong Hoon’s character will be struggling to win Han Ga-in’s love against Jae Hee and Denise Oh. Once a medical school student himself, Kim Jeong Hoon’s upcoming role as a doctor has already become the hot topic of conversation.

Top Star Ju Ji-Hun’s Transformation into a Hunk

Ju Ji-Hun reappeared in public last March 12 at Seoul Gangnam Imperial Palace Hotel to attend a press interview for his new upcoming KBS 2TV drama ‘Mawang (Prince of Darkness)’ (writer Kim Ji Woo, director Park Chan-Hong) scheduled to air on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. This was his first official outing in one year, and his physical transformation from his past appearance in the drama ‘Gung’ is attracting much attention from both the media and netizens.

Ju Ji-Hun made his debut as a model, and with his tall height and lean body he quickly rose to stardom through his acting debut appearance in ‘Gung’.

The added muscles to his already-acknowledged figure have made him the possessor of a perfect body.

Ju Ji-Hun’s solid muscular figure is a result of 3 hours of daily weight training. He also watched his diet, eating only healthy food such as chicken breasts.

Ju Ji-Hun’s agency revealed “Ju Ji-Hun built his body to play the role in his upcoming drama, and although he has lost about 5kg in the process, it is actually the workout which makes him look good.”

The opening scene of the drama ‘Mawang’ scheduled to begin coming March 21, will feature Ju Ji-Hun at a swimming pool, showing off his perfectly lean muscular body.

‘Mawang’ is about two men destined to be rivals, played by Eom Tae Woong and Ju Ji-Hun, and their relationship with Shin Min Ah who possesses supernatural powers. ‘Mawang’ is the second ‘revenge drama’ following the KBS 2TV drama ‘Buhwal (Resurrection)’ which aired in 2005. Ju Ji-Hun plays the role of a Jekyll and Hyde-like lawyer.

Ju Ji-Hun Plays a Cold-hearted Character in a New Drama

Ju Ji-Hun will play a cold-hearted character behind his angel-like appearance in a new drama called “Devil (Mawang)”, which is scheduled to broadcast on March 21st on KBS. The drama staff highly believed that Ju Ji-Hyun would be the perfect actor to play the devilish character.

“Though Seungha, played by Ju Ji-Hun seems to be a warm-hearted person, he hides a very cold-hearted nature inside”, said Park Chan Hong, the PD who cast Ju Ji-Hun for the role. Ju Ji-Hun also likes his new role because of this relatively rare drama subject matter and fine-spun story.

Ju Ji-Hun who has become famous since starring in the MBC drama “Princess Hours (Gung)” in which he humbly said that this drama also has the potential to be a big hit since it has a great scenario.

He is preparing for his role as a cold-hearted lawyer (Seungha) in “Devil (Mawang)”. Seungha gets the bitter taste of the world at an early age when he experiences his brother’s death. Seungha pleads cases for the poor and the alienated for 12 years while concealing his real name, ‘Jeong Tae-seong’ who commits murder by his own erroneous judgment. How well will Ju Ji-Hun play this new role?

What Next as Stars Emerge Blinking From the Military?

Hopes run high in show business as some top stars return to the limelight this year after two years in forced retirement due to their military service. Fans of So Ji-sup, Song Seung-hun, Jang Hyeok and Ji Seong look forward to seeing them back on TV. But given the fickle nature of the entertainment world, it remains to be seen whether they will be able to reclaim their old status. What advice can experts give them? The Chosun Ilbo asked 10 renowned TV producers and writers to offer their opinions.

Clockwise from left: So Ji-sup, Song Seung-hun, Ji Seong and Jang Hyeok

So Ji-sup
So Ji-sup rose to stardom with his sincere portrayal of reserved, gloomy characters in dramas like “What Happened in Bali” and “Sorry, I Love You.” Now he needs to challenge himself to lighter, funnier characters to expand his potential as an actor. He needs to show the public a different, easier side of him. Even if he decides to appear in a melodrama, he shouldn’t take a too serious role. The cynical character in a romantic comedy would be a good idea. Or he might try his luck in a film, ignoring the clamor from TV producers. If he does, he might be well advised to start in a low-budget independent movie rather than a blockbuster. If at all possible, however, he should try to preserve his very special aura.

So will be discharged in April.

Song Seung-hun

Song’s prettiness has rather worked against him in choosing parts. He needs to look closely at the road fellow actor Jang Dong-gun has taken in his efforts to gain recognition for his acting rather than his looks. Song should choose a strong, tough role for his comeback that can erase his gentlemanly image in melodramas like “Autumn Fairy Tale.” He will have to put everything he has into whatever role he is going to play to make the public forget the draft-dodging scandal. Why not play an evil or cold-blooded character? Whatever part he decides to play, he should project a tough, masculine image. This is all the more important if he wants to see adulation in Japan to continue. But he should try to impress Korean fans first.

Song was discharged in November.

Jang Hyeok
Jang Hyeok is considered a spirited and potentially versatile actor. But before he had a chance to prove his potential, he disappeared into the military after a draft-dodging scandal. Now, he should move on from the young energetic parts to show a more serious, mature side, extending his appeal to older audiences. It may suit him to play a gentle character in a heart-warming human drama. Or he could try to revive the image he projected as a taciturn rebellious teenager in the drama “School” in 1999.

Jang was discharged in November.

Ji Seong
Ji Seong has set himself up as such a paragon of virtue that he urgently needs a charismatic evil part that is hard to forget. He could take Sean Penn as a model. Just before joining the army, he tried to do just that with “Blood Tears”, where he played a bad man who had been damaged by life and left a strong impression despite the fact that he appeared in only a few scenes. A similarly impressive character will do nicely for a comeback.

Ji will be discharged in June.

Default 'Host' Sequel Planned for 2009

'Host' Sequel Planned for 2009

Chungeorahm Film, the film production and distribution company of the blockbuster hit "The Host," plans to release a sequel to the film in 2009.

But director Bong Joon-ho, the driving force of the original, will not join the film crew making "The Host 2" as he has other plans.

"We'll start making the film from this fall," Choi Yong-bae, CEO of Chungeorahm, was quoted as saying by Yonhap News.

South Korean technical staff will make a 10-minute computer graphic (CG) test film this fall.

"We have gathered technical know-how from making 'The Host,' " Choi said. The film was made in collaboration with foreign technical staff including some from the United States. "I think we can use domestic CG technology this time."

The budget will be about 10 billion won, similar to the previous film, and the same monster will be used.

Asian Press Gears up for Star's Release from Army

The amount of attention the international press is paying to Song Seung-hun’s discharge from the military on Wednesday shows elements of mass hysteria. Returning to civilian life after a two-year stint, the actor’s first faltering steps on the outside will be captured by contingents from all over. Even among Korean Wave stars, it is remarkable for one man’s release from military duty to cause such a stir. Japan is at the forefront.

Some 170 members of the press will be heading to Hwacheon in Gangwon Province for the star’s release. The star’s agency M-Net Media has received so many applications to cover the moment that it has outsourced handling of the requests and arranging transport for the press. Almost every one of Japan’s major dailies is sending a delegation.

The Sankei Sports, which always keeps close watch on K-wave stars, will be there, as will women’s and entertainment magazines such as Weekly Woman, not to mention all the dedicated cinema and Korean Wave magazines. The broadcast rights belong exclusively to FujiTV. Cameras will be rolling from the moment Song emerges until the end of his Asian Fan Meeting on Nov. 18-19, to be edited down into a special feature program to be aired around Dec. 17.

China, Taiwan and Thailand will dispatch reporters and crews and will also have their Korea correspondents at hand to capture the big moment. The domestic press, of course, will be there in force. Newspapers, magazines and entertainment programs are preparing for the great day. “Due to huge number of requests to cover the event, we ended up preparing our own transport from Seoul to Hwacheon. Song will be discharged at around 8 a.m. on Nov. 15, so vehicles will leave Seoul at 2 a.m. on the day,” M-Net Media announced.

Song has enjoyed unabated popularity at home and abroad despite his enforced absence from the screen. With an explosive surge in fans in Japan and other Asian nations, he is seen as the next-generation figurehead of the Korean Wave star following Bae Yong-jun aka Yon-sama.

Song Seung-hun Likely Next Favorite of Japanese

The Japanese Sankei Sports reported Tuesday that a local broadcaster has been receiving a barrage of applications to be a member of the studio audience for its interview with Korean actor Song Seung-hun.

When planning to hold the open interview with the leading Korean Wave star, Fuji TV decided to invite 100 of his fans to its studio. It began receiving applications from Nov. 27 through its website. "Until the deadline for applications, which was Dec. 4, some 200,000 people applied. This means 2,000 people are competing for one seat," the broadcaster said.

It will be the first visit to the island nation made by Song, who has been invited to the "Hot Fantasy Odaiba 2006-2007" hosted by Fuji TV. During the event, which begins on Dec. 9 and ends Jan. 3 next year, on display will be still images of Song as well as clothes and props from dramas where he appeared such as "Autumn in My Heart" and "Summer Scent". Song will stay in Japan from Dec. 12 until 14.

The Japanese sports daily said that the number of applicants is much greater than the number who applied to attend a talk show with Kwon Sang-woo in 2004, for which some 100,000 people competed for 1,200 audience seats.

Fuji TV also said that it is surprised to see such a response. "We think that Song Seung-hun will become as popular as Japan's favorite son-in-law Bae Yong-jun," it said.

Meanwhile, Song's Japanese fan club established in July has drawn more than 10,000 members so far. Some 3,500 Japanese fans attended his fan meetings held in Seoul on Nov. 18 and 19 after he was discharged from military service.
