Default Tell me about the leather on Tano

I know there are lots of Tano fans here. Can you please describe the leather for me a bit?
I can see from pictures that all are glossy. I am a little hesitant about this - I usually love the matte smooth leather.
And I have ordered a Glossy Leather F&C, and was very disappointed with the color and the leather. The whole thing just looked so cheap.

For the Tano lovers, can you tell me how the leather feels? And does the leahter wear well? Is it soft to touch? Is there variation in colors?

Thanks!!!

The crunch leather changes over time. When you first get your Tano, the leather is a bit stiff but quickly softens up. It is thin, soft, calf skin which is why the bags are so lightweight. The finish is glossy, but not too glossy. It eventually starts to "crunch"/"crackle a bit and if you don't treat it, some of the underlying color of the leather will start to show through. A lot of people like this distressed look. I am not a fan of distressed so I regularly treat my Tanos with a protecting spray (Apple), which keep them on the shinier side. There are variations in the leather but this is true of any other 100% leather bag that I own. If it weren't for the variations, dyed leather would look like vinyl.
Hope this helps.

Here is a Description of Crunch Leather from Tano Expert.

Crunch leather is Tano's core leather, and its extremely popular. Its lightweight, yet very durable. Its an Italian calfskin that is tanned with two layers of natural transparent dyes. (Transparent dyes are used so that the natural characteristics of the leather are not obscured- so dont be surprised if you see a few natural flaws on the skin. Thats normal.) The first color is a neutral tan sort of color, then the top color is what you see. As the bag wears, the top color will gradually fade a bit and loose some of its shine. The bottom color will start to show through a bit, lending a cool, vintage sort of look. The leather is easy to care for, and it gets smooshier the more you use it.

I like you prefer more smooshier leather but I do own several crunch leather bags. Tano has a new velver leather being offered this fall.
Musthavebag.com will have five bags in the velvet leather that I know of.
Here they are for your consideration. The Carte Blanche and the Little Red Chevette are very popular. If you want one of these I would get on
the musthavebag.com preorder list.

Carte Blanche

Tribal Master

Strictly Sauvage

Baroque Beauty

Little Red Chevette

I would hope this thread can stay here - I would like to hear opinions about Tano leather as well - wouldn't there be more subjective responses if this wasn't in the Tano forum? Just a thought.

I recently saw three Tano Boogie Buckets for the first time in a local store. I felt that the Blueberry color looked very shiny and, to me, looked vinyl-y and cheap. On the other hand, the Fudgsicle color (which was last spring's brown) looked less shiny and more like standard leather. The third one was black, but since I'm not a black bag fan I didn't look so much at the leather...sorry!

But I see what you are saying about the shine...and I think it is true for many of their brighter colors.

I actually really like crunch leather. It is lightweight and the colors are very vibrant. I for one prefer a slightly glossy leather and crunch is glossy at first. If you leave the leather untreated it will lose it's shine and break in to look vintangey. I prefer to keep the leather looking new so I treat mine with mink oil and it stays new. crunch leather also smells soooo good.

I think that if you are not fond of thinner and lighter weight leathers with a slight gloss to them (like Crunch), then you won't be fond of Tano's crunch leather, either. I could talk all day about how great it is, how durable and lightweight, how it softens with time and more, but if you don't like that kind of leather you won't like Tano's version of it, either.

But like LizCordova said, you might want to try the velvet leather. I do not have a bag in this type of leather - I believe it is new for this season - but it would definitely seem to better meet your preferences.

Good luck finding a Tano to meet your needs. I love the brand and I love the bags, and I love the colors. They are a quality product, but as is true with any other brand, they may not be right for everyone.

I love all of Tano's leather. I have crunch (love the vibrant, glossy color, lightweight, smells great), moto leather (similar to crunch, even color), cloud (my fave, it's so supple and retains its shape), lenny (soft and durable), diva (metallic suede), master leather (super duper soft), gentle washed leather (soft, and puddly). Tano has lots of different leathers and there should be something for you if you don't like crunch.

I have a Tano French Nanny in fudgesicle, the crunch leather is semi-glossy and very thin. However, it's a great knock around bag and has held up to drenching downpours, coffee spills, kids stepping on it etc. and it still looks good. Don't expect a luxurious leather or lining but they are fun, casual bags that can stand up to a lot of use. Considering the price point I think they're worth what you pay for them, plus they come in a fun variety of colors. I do not think they look at all like vinyl and the leathers have beautiful varitions in color.

I love Tano's crunch leather. It is lightweight, durable, wears well and looks great IMO. But there is no doubt that it is a thinner leather and when it is brand new it can be slightly shiny. I don't think it looks cheap or feels cheap, but it may be an acquired taste. The picture threads in the Tano forum can demonstrate how bags look as they age.

Tano also has had velvet leather, cloud leather, Lenny leather and others, and many of these were softer and thicker and smooshier than the Crunch. If thinner leathers with a sheen to them do not appeal to you, then crunch leather is definitely not for you. But one of the other leather types may appeal to you more.
