If you thought F+C's glossy leather looked cheap....you will probably think the same of Tano's crunch leather, imo. You might be better off checking out some of their other leathers that have been mentioned if you want to give them a shot.

i have seen 3 tano bags in my life....i was less than impressed with all 3 of them...even for the good price point, they seemed a bit overpriced IMO. but if i was HEAD OVER HEELS in love with one of their styles, i would still give it a go! many ladies on here love the bags!

I own one Tano bag. I don't know the style or name of the bag, but it caught my eye in a boutique while I was on vacation last year. I was attracted to the style. Very cute black tote w/lots of pockets and silver hardware.

I would agree that the leather is a bit thin, but I guess that's why it is so light weight. I paid $180.00 for the bag, which I felt was reasonable.

Overall, I have been satisfied. My experience with the brand is quite limited, so I'm sure other members will chime in with more info

When will the Tribal Master and the Baroque Beauty be out?

Crunch leather is Tano's core leather, and its extremely popular. Its lightweight, yet very durable. Its an Italian calfskin that is tanned with two layers of natural transparent dyes. (Transparent dyes are used so that the natural characteristics of the leather are not obscured- so dont be surprised if you see a few natural flaws on the skin. Thats normal.) The first color is a neutral tan sort of color, then the top color is what you see. As the bag wears, the top color will gradually fade a bit and loose some of its shine. The bottom color will start to show through a bit, lending a cool, vintage sort of look. The leather is easy to care for, and it gets smooshier the more you use it.

I like you prefer more smooshier leather but I do own several crunch leather bags. Tano has a new velver leather being offered this fall.
Musthavebag.com will have five bags in the velvet leather that I know of.
Here they are for your consideration. The Carte Blanche and the Little Red Chevette are very popular. If you want one of these I would get on
the musthavebag.com preorder list.

Carte Blanche

Tribal Master

Strictly Sauvage

Baroque Beauty

Little Red Chevette

Tribal Master and Baroque Beauty are new styles for Fall 08 so they
will not be coming until sometime in September.

Tano is by far my favorite brand. I love the crunch leather as it is lightweight and semi glossy which makes them repel stains better. The styles and colors can't be beat. There are issues with all brands at some time- my RM's handles don't hold up well and get darker with age, Kooba's wear in and stain easily. My lifestyle does not allow me to baby my bags, so Tano is the perfect for me! Just my opinion.

I like the crunch leathers too, but as LindaP pointed out, the leather is quite thin and as MJDaisy pointed out, they're a bit overpriced. However, the styles that Tano has are so very cute. I just wish they'd improve the production: use better lining and actually tack down the inner zip pocket so it's not flying all over the place and maybe add a touch of padding to the bags. That said, the crunch leather colors are very nice and the outside is durable. It's the lining that gets me, it's so thin and cheap and just not done right.

Thank you everyone for your input. I will have to give it more thoughts before I take the dive. I do love the colors, and they look delicious in the pictures. I also love the fact that glossy leather might not be easily scratched or stained. But I am still concerned about my experience with F&C. Maybe it was just the color of that F&C, it was pale, making it look sooooo much worse. It didn't look like a $400 bag at all!
Thank you again everyone!

I agree with darcy.....there are quality issues with every designer and every brand. I just purchased a Dooney on sale at Dillards that was a $328 bag for a great sale price of $109. Unbelievable, I know. But the point I'm trying to make is that this Dooney, which is a great bag, has a plastic zipper and unfinished leather on the handles. I would never have paid over $300 for it, but it was worth the $100 to me, as the Dooney and the Tano were comparable in the quality of the leather handles and zipper. Dooney has a more substantial leather, but that was about it. I think you get more than what you pay for with Tano, but that is just my opinion, too.

I agree with this. This always turns out to be a touchy subject - people either love Tano or don't care so much for them. I don't care for the Crunch leather myself.

You may want to check Tano's website, as they list stores that carry Tano bags within a given area or zip code. You might be able to find a store that carries a few (even if they are not the styles you want) so you can check out the leather in person. That might be your best bet. There are very few stores around me that carry enough Tanos to be listed by the website, but many small boutiques carry a few here and there.

Agree with you on the zipper pocket and ditto on the cell phone pocket - the way it flaps around it's pretty much worthless to hold my cellphone, it just falls out. I put a purse-to-go in there though and that worked out well to hold all my things as well as having a good pocket for the cell.

Luna Boston has free shipping and returns so that might be a great way to get a look at the bag and then send it back if you don't care for it. I think you can use the code grechen there and get 2o% off. They only have the Boogies up now in the new colors but I'm sure soon the other styles will be rolling in.

It's weird but although I really like Tano's crunch leather, I'm not so happy with their trim leather and hardware. I have a red Tano bag and the crunch leather is great but the brown leather used for the trim just isn't as good and the hardware is just a bit too shiny for me. IMHO, if Tano improved the trim leather and hardware their bags would be killer. JMHO

For those who say tano bags are "overpriced", Im just curious, what other designers do you think make a better, similarly sized all leather handbag for around $200-$250 retail? I cant think of ANY brand that even comes close to Tano in terms of styling and quality in that price point.

The crunch leather is top grain Italian calfskin, which is hand stained using natural dyes. Its lightweight (by design- thats one of Tano's seling points) but its strong and it has a lot of personality. It might not appeal to everyone (no leather does) but its not a cheap leather by any means.

Furthermore, Tano is so unique in the industry in terms of its ENORMOUS selection of styles and colors. Whereas most designers keep making the same old bags every season (perhaps introducing 3 new colors or 1 new style) Tano offers a rainbow of fresh new colors and about 70 brand new styles EVERY SINGLE SEASON. The production is limited, and once the bags are gone, thats it- they're gone. I think that makes them very special.

You know I really enjoy the Tano SF since its generally such a positive, friendly place (unlike some other places on TPF.) The people who are frequent posters here are very careful not to offend others by making negative remarks that can hurt peoples feelings.

Even though I think that some other brand's products look "cheap" and are "overpriced", I don't go into those SFs and say so. A SF is obviously a place where fans share their enthusuiasm for a brand. What's the point of coming into a SF to make nasty remarks about a brand?

I subscribe to the "if you dont have anything nice to say, dont say it at all" theory. But I guess not everyone else does. :(
