Regarding SOs and BFs --
  • when one of you does laundry - whites and colors all in one wash or separate washes
  • when one of you chooses to stay put on a line or jump back and forth to beat the wait
  • which one of you is the spender or the spendthrift and what is said about what the other does
These things seem so superficial, but they do point to different approaches and/or thinking on a bigger scale and whether a person can deal with the way the other person does things....

Based on my experiences:

1) live with them
2) experience some kind of significant event (good or bad) - seeing how they react to you
3) disagree with them

Based on my experience, when I fell seriously ill.

My true friends supported me, remembered me and I am grateful to them till this day.

Those that I thought were my friends, they didn't even call, eventhough they knew I was going through bad times. I have since dropped them.

1. when you find out what they say about you behind your back.

I had a best friend for almost ten years and thought she was the sweetest person ever! My awakening came when my boyfriend showed me what she wrote when he asked her what she thought of me in an online chat. It turned out she was an extremely dishonest person. She even stole from me! She kept a my then new jacket that she couldn't fit in her closet for 3 years. Her younger sister is the one who realized the jacket was mine and returned it.

when youve seen them up, and then also when their down.....

Its true that if someone has changes in their life and you see that they dont change much because of it, is when you know basically, who they are inside.

...until you:
- ask them to take you to/pick you up from the airport
- see them under stress
- travel with them
- see them caught off guard

You never truly know who a person is until you've been sick and they have to take care of you. This was when I fell in love with my husband all over again. He took care of me like a champ, cleaning up liquids from both ends, for 2 days, and never said a word.

So true! I was really really sick a few months ago and my poor guy had to take care of me and clean up after me (yuck, I know). Anyhow, I remember thanking him and telling him that I knew he really loved me! lol... we were together for over 5 years but it's things like that that show you how they REALLY are. If you can clean up my puke, you're a keeper.

Ooh, I really like this one (c), good call! If you're condescending or unnecessarily rude to waitstaff or people in any position to serve you, that says a lot. I also tend to notice when people get cheap with a tip.

I agree with a ton of these answers... but I am still learning about most people.

But if we are talking about Vlad, a few things really came into play:

1) Spend time apart - as in him being in Germany me being in the US
2) Go through Crisis together. We had a few of these
3) see if you can grow together... as friends, a couple, etc
