The drunk one is a good one... how people act when they've been drinking -- especially if they had a bit too much -- gives you a whole lot of information about them! Some people turn into completely different people. Others show you a few traits you didn't know they had.

Give them everything you can and get nothing in return.

I absolutely agree about the drinking. I'm a blabbermouth when I drink and admit a lot of things, but I tend to have the same attitude as I always do, give or take a lot of laughing and craziness

Until you...

Have to rely on them for everything, such as when you're debilitated to due to surgery or another medical condition.

Experience a loss in your family.

Live with them (!).

Spend time with those closest to them, such as family and friends.

Are most vulnerable, strip everything away and really show yourself and who you are to that person.

Have to make major decisions together.

I totally agree with travel. My mom has a childhood friend of 40(!) years and they went on a ten day trip abroad. When mom came back, she was like OMG, I never knew she was like that!!! And not in a positive way

So many good answers.

I will add:

Working with them

I had a close friend whom I helped get a job with me years ago. It almost destroyed our relationship. I never knew she could be so lazy.

I love how eloquently you put it. Zophie is dead on.. and I agree with the posters who say you don't really know someone until you loan them money or need money.

I agree with all of the points so far!

I'd like to add:

....you are separated from them by long distance.*
....you get into your first fight.
....you read their diary. (just kidding)

*I lost a lot of friends when I moved. The real ones kept in touch, and the fair-weather friends didn't even call when I was hospitalized, even though I considered them among my best friends. How's that for an eye opener?

You never truly know who a person is until you allow him/her to take advantage of you.

Those who takes you for granted for whatever reasons is never worth your time. People who truly cares and loves you will never intentionally do things that will hurt and/or disrespect you.

Great thread with many thoughtful responses... Here's mine.

You never truly know who a person is until you see how they treat their parents.

I've found this to be very telling in my life experience so far.
