Default why do men like sports and women like shopping? (stereotypes)

I know that many people have the stereotype that women like shopping, and men like sports. But frankly why? and why have all of these types if stereotypes arised? how did this originate?

I've always thought men like sports because they are competitive
Women like pretty things

I like both, and my husband likes both (but only likes shopping for himself). In fact, I would say I'm a bigger shopper and a bigger sports fan than he is.

But otherwise, I agree with Fabulosity!

I like internet shopping, not brick and mortar shopping. I like watching Nascar, shows that deal with big machinery, tree harvesting, etc.

Because if there were no stereotypes, sitcom writers would be SOL.

I love sports and shopping.

I guess these kinds of stereotypes have general sort of truths to them?

Obviously it's not true in all cases. But what's the ratio of men/women if you go to a sports bar or usual sport games (aside from a table of couples)? How many times do you see women shopping and the men sitting on the benches looking he's about to shoot himself?

My man loves to shop. My ex doesn't watch sports except for the two sports he's interested in. There are exceptions to everything, but a sweeping general observation does say it's true.

Those stereotypes exist because of how men and women are traditionally socialized in America (and in many other places as well).

Men are socialized to idealize physical strength, success, manliness, competition, and aggression. Sports emodies all of these things.

Women are socialized to idealize physical beauty, material things, and our own appearance. We're also supposed to make a comfortable home, traditionally. All of these require the acquisition of physical goods, often, which means that a lot of women like to shop.

There is nothing INHERENT in men and women that requires these things of us - society sends us subtle (or, at times, not so subtle) cues from the time that we're born that these are the kinds of behaviors and pursuits in which were supposed to engage, based on our gender. I was raised in an environment that gave me a bit of male socialization as well as the normal female, and I ended up competitive and aggressive, but still very feminine. This happens more and more with every generation, as it becomes more socially acceptable for women to pursue career success and be ambitious and men to embrace things like moisturizer and fitted jeans.

Oh, and I love college football.

I think this is completely a stereotype. I know lots of guys how love to shop and lots of ladies who love sports. I get so sick of stereotypes.

i could see this.... my dad was into sports and my little brother as well, my older brother wrestled... louies dad plays the guitar and sings, and louie is really into music as well. my mom always loved to shop and loved music, and me and my sis love shopping and music, and my older brother is into music. he actually builds guitars for a living for collings guitars.
