I know exactly what you mean. I just went through a MAJOR closet purge selling things I swore I never would. You know what? It felt GREAT!! Initially, buying things would give me something to look forward to, but, in the end, it all got tossed onto a pile and I was on to the next thing. I've recently gone through some major life changing events that put everything I am and everything I own, back into perspective. Nice things are just that, nice. I kept a few favorites, but, all in all, I feel like less is more. If you have too many special things, then none of them are special.

I go through these cycles too where I have to purge the closets and drawers...kitchen cabinets...I just took a ton of very nice cookware that I hardly use anymore and donated it to an at risk teens organization. Felt great to cleanse my home, get rid of clutter and hopefully help out a good cause.

OP, if you're no longer getting joy from your possessions, it's time to let them go. Believe me, 99.9% of the time you won't miss any of it, HTH! As others have posted, in the end our "things" don't matter.

And whatever it was that happened that triggered this, I hope you feel comfort and can find peace to resolve it! XXXOO PGal

i have seriously pared down my jewelry and clothing this year, good for the wallet...good for the mind.

i like a clean closet, i only wear jewelry that is versatile for day or evening.

diamond studs (moissanite...my diamonds are in the deposit box)
cartier watch, stainless...great for everything
engagement ring/band

that is about it!

i have a few LV's...most are well over 5 years old, but all classic pieces

lots of denim, linen, and a few sundesses for summer (i don't work...so this is acceptable attire for me)

That is it! it feels good. I swear, it does.

The truth is- material things can't make you happy. But i'm sure you'll like your belongings again, just give it time and wait until you feel better.

Also- it should be said that when i'm in a happy relationship i spend a lot less money on material items. If you're buying to fill a void, then that's not really happiness, unfortunately.

I have felt that way. I have purses, shoes, jewelry. I told my mom if a tornado was to come, I will throw all of my jewelry in a bag. Just enjoy it while you have it but if something was to happen, it is only material stuff, that can be replaced, lives cannot. If you see something you like or love, buy it and enjoy. Yes, it does bring that initial excitement of joy.

thank-you all you incredible gals for honest & kind your responses... sadly... some of you have guessed right. i buy things to fill in voids in my life (and then i meet someone amazing & could share the more simple joys of life with) but then i couldn't let go of my material life & i guess i lost that amazing someone... i never felt this way my entire life. i actually didn't even eat anything for almost 3 whole days. but i've gotten better today....(thank-you)

i don't feel content or having fulfilled this emptiness in my heart (even if i have everything i want - or as some of u said...only temporily will i feel contentment) but it does not last. i want to be happy but i dont know how anymore...

I don't consider people "material objects". And yes, I believe I can take my friends and family with me. I believe in heaven.

you reminded me of what my shrink told me last friday. contentment does not come from situation/circumstances but from within. the within does not include another person. it's your inner being. i don't have the answer neither...i am still looking.
i hope you feel better soon.

One of the happiest times in my life was a weekend camping by the seaside, I had very few possessions (and certainly no labels) with me and just loved unzipping the tent in the morning and heading out dressed in old casual clothes.

I do love clothes and accessories in general, but for me, sometimes I make a good 'investment' and buy something which fits in with my lifestyle and I adore, and at other times I buy something (in retrospect when things aren't going so well and I fixate on an item as being something which will make me happier) which might be beautiful, but doesn't really 'fit' me.

I still find it hard to distinguish between the two, but I'm trying!

Ideally I'd like a few possessions which I love, a happy family life and great relationship with friends, to progress and learn in my career, and to achieve things.

This happens to me only after I buy things too often and too easily.. things that i dont think through and purchases i dont truely love.. but nothing like buying an item you've been eyeing off for ages and truely love :)

I feel ya on this one....Ive been having alot of thoughts on this issue myself....

To be totally honest.....I enjoy my "things" alot more than I thought I would..and yes, I do shop when I am feeling down or stressed out. But as long as I dont put meaning in my material things or rely on them to take place of something..it is a nice distractions that did help me in small ways. As long as I am not over doing it in a financial sense, it is like a hobby that keeps me sane.

Sounds like your going through a hard time and going through different emotions, and these things can change your perspectives, hang in there.....hugs to you!!!!
