^^ Missy, every house you ever live in (at least in my experience) has a 'stove fan'. In my first house, it was the microwave. If you ran that while any appliances were plugged into the living room wall's electrical outlet, the lights in the entire house would dim.

In my current house, the furnace is loud and if my husband has his flatscreen TV on in his office and the TV is on in the living room and I run the hairdryer in the main bathroom, it trips the breaker.

In my parents first house, they had to install a sump pump in the crawl space because every time it rained, there'd be water down there.

It's always something.....

Roo, your tripping the breaker story sounds like my mom's house. You can run a toaster, coffee maker, and microwave at the same time or it blows a fuse (she's still got the old-fashioned fuse box!).

Yeah we're getting a new fan to match the new stove, but there was no way I was ever gonna use that fan. We were hoping we could get a microwave to put up there but I don't think there is enough space. Bah. But anyway. As far as know there isn't any breaker trippers in this house, or at least none that I've been told about. I just couldn't stand looking at that ugly green thing anymore, now it's off to find a new one!!

Picked out Countertops with my Mom tonight!!! We skipped working on the house and went to Lowes shopping. We ordered all new wall heaters and when I saw those counter tops I almost shouted out loud in the store. I was so happy! Posting pics soon!

Isn't shopping so much more fun than working?

missy, also surf CRAIGSLIST for stuff. You would not believe the bargains you can find. Many people who have lost homes to foreclosure sell furniture and other stuff for next to nothing. You would not believe the stuff I've found on there....

I second Roo's suggestion of Craigslist and will add a hint to scour garage/yard sales and thrift stores for furniture and other items that can be spiffied up with a little bit of cleaning, paint, etc.

I was doing some wall paper removal of my own saturday night and i thought of you and this thread missy. Something I was wondering about, although really it's none of my business, but if your original thread you said you were going to be living at this house for free (can't remember what family member it belongs to). does that mean it's completely yours - like they're handing over the title - or you're renting for free? What happens when you guys grow out of the house and move out? Will you get something for all the hard work you're putting in in updating the house or is that just sort of a trade off for being able to live there for free?

All the stuff you're doing is going to be adding SO much value to that house and if you're spending your own hard earned money on it then I just don't want you guys to get burned in the future.

Re: the microwave over the oven. If your cupboards are really low.. it IS possible. probably not up to code, but I did it in my house. my microwave isn't up as far as it should be but it works. i have a picture somewhere.... i'll go find it and post. i was determined to get my ugly stove fan down and a nice microwave up! :) more so because my kitchen is tiny and i don't have the counter space for a microwave.

sort of hard to see - but you can tell there's a significant distance between the old oven and the new oven

We r renting the house for free from DF's father. IDK if FIL is handing over the title or not. Probably not. The point of him owning this house is to help his kids get on their feet. When DF's oldest sister got married FIL bought this house to get them out of his LOL, when DFs other sister got married her husband's family took care of them, so between Sister 1 and us, FIL rented it out to random people. Whenever we outgrow the house (if we decide to move. We've kicked around the idea of buying it.) FIL will either turn it over to DFs little brother the way he did us, or rent it out again. We're thinking that all the hard work we r doing on it will get more money in FILs pocket in the future, because DF and I really really want to help take care of our parents. But we are seriously considering buying it. Right now we can't but that's what the whole rent free thing is. FIL is being WAAAY to generous to us, but I guess that's what good parents do! Yeah, it's almost like a trade off I guess. The house needed all this updating anyway. We can do ANYTHING we want to to it and stay there, no charge, for as long as we want, as long as I cook twice a week for FIL! So I figure the least I can do it patch it up a little.

As far as the microwave over the oven goes, we could probably do it, but I found a stove fan at Lowe's I really liked, so I think we'll go ahead and just have cousin-in-law (lol) put in the stove fan. Sure we're losing counter top space, but....eh. I'm just afraid I will run into the microwave when I'm cooking, I'm such a clutz.

Soooo tonight my cousins hubby took down all of our lights and replaced the 2 that he could. The rest of them are hanging by wires so that Mom and I can paint around them tomorrow night. DF will be gone so it's me and Mama, and we can actually get some real work done lol!!!

Here are some cute pics I took tonight! True, they're crappy iPhone pics, but I got halfway to the house and realized we'd left Mama's camera at home!!

The first one is of my cousin and me and her two youngest daughters. Her oldest daughter was probably running around trying to get DF to play with her.

And the 2nd is of DF and cousins hubby tearing down the ceiling fan in the kitchen!
