Default Thoughts on this bday gift idea...??
My dbf's birthday is next Saturday and I was thinking of doing something like this...
  • Get a collage picture frame that holds like 4 or 5 wallet sized pictures
  • Put a gift card in each slot... a $100 AT&T card (he needs a new cell phone, but is undecided... I figure he can just put the giftcard towards whatever), a $50 Golfsmith card (he's a golf addict) and then 2-3 $25 gift cards for restaurants by his work (Jamba Juice, Panda Express, etc) that he can use for workdays.
What do you think? I've been trying to come up with something uber creative and, well, this is about it for me.

I was originally going to get him a new phone but (1) its not really very thoughtful or personal and (2) he doesn't know which one he wants.

I'm also going to take him to a really nice golf course on his birthday. We're going to have a nice brunch and then play a full 18 holes. And I'm going to cook him dinner and make tiramisu for dessert (his favorite)

Thoughts, or suggestions???

^^ You don't think its impersonal? I *hate* giving giftcards because they seem impersonal... but this man spoils himself... if he ever wants something, he just buys it. The only thing I KNOW he wants that he hasn't purchased for himself is a $10k watch... not happenin'

I think it's very thoughtful! A cell phone is usually a personal choice but by him having the gift card to use toward his selection, it's definitely a "present."

Also, if he goes to the food places now anyway, it's a really nice gesture for him to have the gift card to use - and the plus is that he'll think of you each time he uses them.

I think he will appreciate you took the time to think about where he likes to eat/get snacks - that's really "personal", KWIM?

I think it's a great idea! Also, you can give some pictures of you guys to stick in the picture frame, after he takes out and uses the giftcards

That is an AWESOME gift! I usually don't like gift cards either but I started to change my mind about them when my husband gave me a starbucks one 'cause I was going there every day to knit - it was really sweet!

That sounds like a fabulous birthday, he will love it.

I think it's a great, practical gift. My bf is always asking for practical gifts which is easy on me because I get what he wants and I know it is something he will use and appreciate. For my birthday, I always ask for practical things too - gift cards for gas, the supermarket, the drugstore -etc.

i think its a great gift idea but just make sure your partner won't care about receiving giftcards.
a couple of years ago i had just started seeing a guy and his birthday was a few days after our third date. i knew almost nothing about him except he liked music so i bought him a gift card for a massive music store thinking it was a nice offer since we weren't in a serious relationship and it was still pretty new..i was totally wrong and he told me in a text later that night that he felt insulted by it!

Great idea - it's not impersonal b/c you thought of stuff he actually could use - I also think it's a good idea to include pictures of you two!

I agree with everyone & think the gift idea is great! Plus you're not being impersonal at all. You're giving him the gift cards and taking him to brunch/golf/& cooking dinner. These are personal gifts etc.

I like it! All the cards will look cute put together in the frame. I agree with the suggestion to have pictures of the two of you ready to go into the frame when the gift cards come out. I don't think gift cards are that impersonal, especially when you're clearly buying them for places that he likes- that shows you cared! Giving someone cash is another story.

It's a great idea!! Love it!!

My BF's birthday is coming up on friday, unfortunately I have to delay his birthday plans for November because we're going on vacation at the end of this month. I'm such a foodie and somehow food always sneaks into my gifts for others. Have plans to take him to an artisan cheese shop and pick out a selection of cheeses that we both enjoy (old goodies and new things that we'll try with the help of the cheesemongers) then prepare a fondue and cheese sampling/pairing for the evening to enjoy when we get back, I'll put out a spread of fruits, breads, nuts, jams to complement the cheeses.

How bout, instead of the frame, hide the cards in various spots in lingerie that you're wearing for him. Then he can go on an exploration and see what he finds. :)

Or, maybe buy him a round of golf where you're his caddy/beer girl (a cute short skirt is required). Pat his brow when he gets sweaty, clean his balls....golf balls!!
