Thanks for all the sympathies, everyone! I really appreciate all your advice. I am still uncertain as to what I should do. I would like to stand up for my Mom, but I also don't want her to suffer any repercussions. It is a sticky situation. I just wanted to vent about this sort of blatant injustice, so thanks again everyone!

Is the problem of the smelly food intolerable because the smell spreads around the place of business, or does it just stink up the microwave? With popcorn, the smell lingers in the microwave like a plague everytime I open it, but the smell doesn't travel anywhere else.

Getting a few more microwaves, placing them in different locations might help...paid for by the boss of course.

I will just say this without getting too graphic. If you think eggs and fish smell bad coming out of the microwave/stove, think about how it smells after it comes out of a human and then mistakenly have to use the bathroom after that. It's like something crawled up the a$$ and died! You asked.

eww... I am sorry you have to share bathroom with guys! I always think men bathrooms smell worse to begin with.

Wow! I can't believe that. I agree with most people here that it's completely inappropriate for the boss to do that. It's one thing to ban a certain type of food like "Sorry guys, you can't heat up popcorn because the smell circulates the office and our clients can smell that" - I get that and understand why certain foods shouldn't be eaten in the office but to ban all the "Asian people" in the office from using the microwave? I'M SORRY THAT IS DISGUSTING!

Also, I don't know how one or a few people who find it "stinky" should all of a sudden push the boss's decision. The boss seems like a feather-weight. What does the boss expect your mom to do now? Bring raw food or just sandwiches? I'm sorry but even if they were the boss, they have no right to decide that for your mom and her Asian colleagues.
