Default Son going sking - Dad mad!

Not sure if this is a stupid thread but just wanted some opinions. Is it me or what? Last night my 17 year old told me he would be going sking - something he's never done. Anyway, his dad was sleeping so he went out, rented the shoes/skis and I got together gloves, hat etc. to help him. He told me it was a friend from his school and gave me the phone#. It was getting late so I figurered I'd get the rest of the info when I woke him up. Anyway, I tell my DH this morning and he's all ticked off (as usual). Thats a real bad idea is all he says. Of course I just woke up so that irritated me and we had an argument w/me saying he's babying him etc. His opinion is "don't I know all the people that get killed/or terrible accident while sking". So the rest of the morning we're not speaking to each other. Finally, I try to talk to him and he says I'm a terrible parent for not getting any info, I tell him I am when I wake him up. Later he adds "I don't even want to get involved". After all that! Whats your opinion? I'm so sick of bringing things up w/him because to me he always over-reacts, a drama queen.

Honestly, no it isn't you. And frankly, your husband should not have called you a terrible parent.

I'm not a parent, but I think that your DH is wrong, and lashing out at you like that was inappropriate. It was dreadful that he called you a terrible parent! You got a contact number for him, so it's not like you don't know where he is.

Your son is 17 years old, IMO that's old enough to go skiing with some friends, even if it's his first time. The ski rental place will set his bindings to "beginner" and his skis will be set to come off if he falls in a manner that would twist his legs. He'll be fine as long as he's responsible and doesn't ski above his ability. I'm sure the ski place will tell him that, too. People get hurt skiing when they're irresponsible, I think that your DH is overreacting and being very overprotective.

My husband did this with my daughter years ago......the reason he says "I dont want to be involved" is that if something did go wrong, you carry the full blame and he can say, I told you this would happen. He's off the hook for any responsibility.

Unless your son has given you good reason not to trust him, then you should let him go without guilt.

Let your husband pout. When your son gets back safely and tells YOU what a wonderful time he had and everything went smoothly, then you can take full credit for letting him grow up.

Thanks for the opinions everyone. It worked out fine. He enjoyed it, was a little cold (would of helped if he brought his jacket!) and expensive. DH didn't say much just that he was very worried. All that drama and stress for nothing, UGH!

I would have replied "Do you know how many people die in the house every year?"
Seriously, we can't protect our loved ones from LIFE: does your husband never drive your son around, or will he forbid he gets a driver's license? I know skiing can be a dangerous activities, but compared to the dangers on the open road, the risk is quite small.

The fact that you added "(as usual)" when you said your husband was ticked off sounds more important to me. He might have an issue that needs to be addressed (as you said, he overreacts).

Best of luck, and glad your son had fun!
