well it could have been EASIER for him to have a platonic relationship with you and have you around him rather than being rejected by anyone else.

you provided him all the satisfaction a girlfriend would have (minus the physical intimacy) and it probably hurt him nothing ever ended up happening.

Although I would question his orientation...
