Default My Apartment Neighbor Plays the DRUMS

Hi everyone, I just need to rant for a minute. My bf and I live in an apartment building which is nice and, usually, very quiet. Theres just one problem: our neighbors across the hall like to play instruments. At first it was just the piano which we didn't mind, but it turns out that someone also plays the DRUMS. Im talking an entire drum set with symbols and the whole works. The guy doesnt even try to be quiet- he full on PLAYS like hes doing a concert at Radio City. He doesnt play that often (maybe 3-5 times a week) but when he does he goes on for like an hour and its LOUD. I cant imagine being on the floor beneath this guy, or directly next door, and Im actually surprised that no one has complained. Im not going to complain (partly b/c we own this place, we don't rent), at least not yet. I know the little drummer boy is sometimes my neighbors teenage son so I think that sometimes he is playing when his parents arent home, and the dad is only playing sometimes. I just need to rant that I think it is the most ridiculious, rude and selfish thing in the world to live in an APARTMENT building if you own and intend to play the drums. Im sorry but if you want to play the drums at full volume, go buy a house!

So you don't want to complain because you happen to be living there on a permanent basis? Shouldn't it be the other way around?

I'm not sure where you think they would live. Should they go out and buy a house?

It's 3-5 times a week during which hours? During the day? The afternoon? Late at night? During courtesy hours?

That sucks. Does your apartment have a policy regarding excessive noise? If not I would check with the management. Unless someone complains this noise will continue to happen.

All hours- any time from like 7:30am - 10 at night. And yes, I do think they should go out and buy a house if they want to play the drums for an hour or two at a time. Why does everyone around them have to listen to them banging on drums? It gives me a headache and Im sorry but I shouldnt have to ask my friends to shout so that I can hear them on the phone!

And I'm not going to complain YET. Im hoping someone else who is older will beat me to it.

most apartments/condos ask that you be mindful and respectful of the ppl that live around you....so the only way that you are going to get them to stop is #1 go and talk to them yourself [which is usually in the lease agreement] or #2 complain to the management or #3 call the cops [most states have a noise ordinance and it's usually 10 pm]. good luck! i hope they realize how loud they are being....

I live in a condo where the unit next door is rented to some rowdy individuals who blast music (most notably they have a SUB WOOFER against the wall that is also the wall to my bedroom ) all hours of the night...sometimes well into 5am. After talking to them and contacting condo management failed to resolve anything...I thought...well if they're up so late, they MUST have to sleep in in the mornings...

So I blasted screechy screechy Chinese & Vietnamese opera (obtained from my mother) when I left for work in the morning (speakers against the wall I share with my neighbor)...after two days of this no more late night loud music/subwoofer. Not that I'm advocating any revenge tactics but I think it helped them understand how annoying it is when there is lots of noise when one is trying to sleep.

omg! I'm currently having a problem with my next door neighbor as well...he plays loud music at ALL hours...early morning (sometimes he starts it at 5:30 AM, or late at night nonstop from 9 PM to 2 or 3 AM!!)..and the weird thing is, it's mostly on weekdays..on weekends he's quiet!!! it's sooo annoying b/c I'm a college student and am always up late studying or doing papers on weekdays..my building has a good policy on noise and I've made at least 5 complaints so far, so security usually goes up and tells them to be quiet..sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't..if it keeps going on, we are allowed to complain to the billing manager of the building so I assume there will be some kind of fine involved... maybe you should speak to your building personnel about what you can do about it..good luck!!! i know exactly how you feel!

I really hated living in apartments because of the noise. There are drum sets that are quiet. They're electric and you can hook up earphones to them. I agree that it's ridiculous for him to play them in an apartment. Even if he doesn't do it all the time, when he does do it, he's disturbing 10 neighbors around him. I would definitely complain.

I live in an apartment wedged between two churches. On one side is a baptist church and on the other side is some type of crazy spanish church. Let me tell you...NEITHER side is quiet. They spanish have NOTHING against praising Jesus at the top of their lungs at 11pm on a weeknight.

It's a pain, but usually if it's not before 7 AM or after 10 PM, there's not a whole lot you can do.

You would have strongly disliked living next to me a few years ago I used to play the bass, and BF plays the guitar. We moved into a townhouse and would play sometimes, drums and all. His best friend is a drummer, so we would get together and jam out once a week, usually on Saturday afternoons. Eventually we rented a single family home and turned the garage into a studio, soundproofing and all.

Yes, it can be a pain living in an apartment complex and someone thinks its their personal music studio. Is there any way you can talk to your neighbor and figure out a schedule, or at least they can tell you that they're going to be rocking out? That way you know what/when to expect. I don't think it's fair for them to be playing late at night or early in the morning, either.

How annoying!

I would check and see if your complex has courtsey hours. Like twinkle said though, if it's before 10, it is usually within the timeframe for people to be noisier. You might want to consider talking to the management and see if anything can be done. They don't have to say that you are the one that reported the noise.

Your other option is to go speak to the neighbor directly. They might not realize how loud the drumming really is and would feel bad to know they are disturbing other residents.

LOL The fact that you called him "the little drummer boy" CRACKS ME UP!!! LOL

I really feel for you. But in the end, I don't think he's doing anything wrong as long as he's not playing late at night or early in the morning.

You also live in an apartment building... you suggested that the drummer buy a house if he wants to play drums, but maybe you should get a house if you want total peace and quiet? Just a thought. It's not necessarily everyone else that should make an adjustment for your comfort, especially not in an apartment complex.
