Mom turning 75...Gift help please!

I sure need help...

My somewhat difficult, demanding (sorry but true) mother is turning 75. She already told me she does not want or need another bag or jewelry (which is what I typically get her). Last year I got her a David Yurman bangle and I had planned on getting another that she could wear with the one she already has but I guess that is out. Clothes? forget it. Never likes anything I get...even Burberry Constance jacket a couple of years ago. I am bringing a catered luncheon including cake to her house for the whole family but still have no gift in mind. She seems disappointed that no one has planned a big bash for her although we had one when she turned 70 and it was a nightmare. We lost my Dad two years ago and still have not recovered from the trauma...long story. Anyway, any ideas oh wise TPF members???

If only...could care less about the Hermes scarf and too late for family portrait..and, honestly, would feel weird without my Dad in pic. Thanks for your thoughts.

How about manicure, facial? Gift certificate? My mom just turned 82 so I'm trying to think of the things she likes. Its hard as they get older.

Last time I did that she never used the g.c. I spoke to a friend and she thinks I should just get another Yurman piece since she likes the first one I gave her. The bracelets look nice worn together. On the other hand I often feel like I am throwing my money away of these pricey gifts for her because nothing ever truly pleases her. I asked her specifically if there was anything she wanted or wanted to do and I think I am supposed to be a mind reader.

Does she have any hobbies or anything that she ever talked about that she might like to try? Something for the home?

How about a trip? Does she like to travel? Can you take her to a Broadway show? Does she have a restaurant that she likes to eat in all the time? Is there something special she could do with the grand kids (if she has grandchildren)? Does she have any friends? Maybe you could pay for a little luncheon with her friends?

I like this train of thought. My grandmother LOVES when we do simple things like take her to the movies, out to dinner, etc. So maybe an elaborate version of an outing, like high tea somewhere followed by a show or a concert?

All good ideas but I already suggested most of them and really do not want to shell out for a trip. I offered to take her to whatever restaurant she wanted but she was not thrilled so I am bringing lunch/cake/flowers and now I need a gift too I guess...or maybe this is all enough?

What about something with you or even the whole family? Like I know if I give my mom a gift card to the spa she probably won't use it, but if I make it a mother-daughter day thing and go with her she will go and enjoy it more!

Also, maybe she'll like it if you go shopping together and you can have her pick out something on the trip and buy it for her there.

Thanks to all. I decided to get another Yurman bangle. I can not really take her shopping as she lives over three hours away and unless she comes to me it is a little difficult to do. I also got nice cards and a 7 and a 5 candle so I will make it as special as I can and hopefully she will not be too disappointed...she is a tough one.
