I dont know...although a hubby is dependent on his wife to get the housekeeping done, i feel that housekeeping or even rearing children is something that can be replaced by maids or nannies. hence, i've always had the idea that housewives are more dependent on their husbands than vice versa.

For example, if the housewife leaves the relationship, the man is able to pay someone to help him with the kids/housework. But if the hubby leaves the relationship, the wife is left with not much cashflow and not much work experience on top of that, KWIM?

Then again, I'm unmarried, so what do I know And in my country, having a maid or two is commonplace, thus, maybe that's why my viewpoint is different.

I guess I am dependent and if my husband decides to leave me, I am screwed. But I think sometimes you just have to take a chance. It was important to us to have me stay home and be with our children.

I have taken some precautions to protect myself. I had several of my own retirement and investment accounts that I accummulated through the years. We only just combined out nonretirement accounts (although we don't have much in nonretirement). Also, I know every asset we have like the back of my hand since I pretty much handle the financial matters now. I always have had my own checking account and credit cards. We got married late in life so I had my financial life pretty much in place. I probably wouldn't earn as much if I went back to work, having been out of the work force for a while but I would survive.
