Default foot in mouth situations anyone???

let me start with my horribly embarassing story...

i was talking to this lady at my job who has picture of this 9 year old girl all over her desk... the lady that i work with looks like she's in her mid to late 50's so WITHOUT THINKING i blurted out---

"awweeee your granddaughter is soooo cute!!!"

she glared at me and said, "that's my DAUGHTER"

my jaw dropped as i tried to think of something quick and smart to say (like, um AN APOLOGY!!!) and i tried but the only sound that came out of my mouth sounded something like "uh-un-aaaaaa-mmmm-hee-ummm"

after what seemed like 5 minutes of baby talk, "i'm sooo sorry" finally came out....

open mouth > insert both feet..

i'd like to see you try and top that folks!

I was with my best friend and she said to me in our language (not English)
"Woaww, that baby looks like a gremlin"
Then the baby's mom turned her head and stared right at us.
She spoke the same dialect.
YIKES!

Unfortunately I do this. It's mainly when I am trying to be helpful when I should really just SHUT-UP!! LOL

We recently built our home. We were the first home on the block so I wanted to welcome everyone. Well, the next door neighbors were visiting their home as it was being built and I went to say hi! We spoke for a while and I discovered they were from another state. One of the daughters says, " We are getting a pool!" I said great! And trying to be helpful since they aren't from Texas I told the parents, "Make sure you don't use XXX pools as they are way over priced." They said, "Oh that's who we are using." " Umm okay. Well, they make pretty pools" I said. I should have shut-up there but I continued and wanted to really be more helpful and said, "Well, make sure you don't roll it onto your mortgage as you wind up paying $180K for an $80K pool!" Umm yeah guess what they rolled it in!! LOL OMG I was mortified. Funny thing is that it's been a few months and we are the best of friends. We have laughed about that conversation several times!

Ohhhh boy... I could fill this thread in a millisecond LOL

Some family friends of ours had recently built a new house. When I went to see it, I was trying to be enthusiastic and said "Wow! It's really coming along! It'll look great after it's painted!" (it was a grey colour, which I swear looked like cement) And the owner looked at me for a full 20 seconds before going "It's finished... we had that colour custom made."

God, it still makes me cringe...

I have heaps more and I'm sure I'll revisit this thread again and again LOL... I think I must have an inbuilt survival mechnism that makes me forget those awkward situations, though, because that's the only one I can think of at the moment yet I know there are heaps more!

Oh, where do I even start. We had some doctor friends over for dinner and joked about our DS who was about 9 months at the time. And I sometimes say that if he acts badly and "If you ever see some Asian kid on your doorstep, take him in and feed him please."

Well, I took it further this time and said, "yeah, you can treat him like your adopted kid from Korea."

Within milliseconds, I remembered. The friend's wife was adopted from Korea.

We all laughed uncomfortably for a moment before I wanted to crawl under a rock and die.

my lil sis and i were hangin out by the public pool in our town when a classmate of hers joined in to hang out...

we were just minding our own business when we noticed this lady coming out of the pool wearing a one piece swimsuit that wasn't exacly befitting her body type. it was mesh all over except the areas that need to be covered to keep it GP.. as she emerged from the pool, i guess the water made the suit hang loose coz the black patch that was supposed to cover her "girls" sagged down to her belly!!!

my sister's jaw dropped and started laughing hysterically! grasping for breath, she nodged her friend, who was sitting next to her and pointed to the lady (whose nipples were still exposed without her knowledge!!!) saying ---

"oh my gosh look at that!!!!" trying to discreetly point at the lady...

her friend looks over and said, "um, that's my mom"....

my sister couldn't say anything else but, "ummm, no offense"

lol no offense????!!!! no offense???!!!!!! lol
she grabbed my arm and begged me to take her home lol

i think the best was one time in high school a friend and i were at a pet shop. we were chatting up the fish guy and were talking about our version of ski week. I said "yeah, it's INTERCOURSE week". *Cue turning bright red* yeah, i said the intercourse word instead of interSESSION.

I think the best though was from my roommate in college when she asked a very pregnant woman in a bathroom for a tampon. whoops!

LOL!!!

Not me personally that I can think of off the top of my head, but my cousin's coworker was showing him her newborn's picture, and without thinking about it, he said (REALLY loudly and without realizing it), "she takes after you... she looks like a monkey!" (in my cousin's defense, I think to him these two thoughts weren't related... LOL)

I JUST did this the other night, and I KNOW better, but I SWEAR she looked at least 6months pregnant. A gal was picking up an item off craigslist and I see this very round HIGH tummy and I ask her if she's expecting her third (as her two girls are in the car) and she says, "No, I'm not expecting".... I am usually SOOOOOO Good about things like that and WHAMO... I fell for the BIGGEE You are NEVER supposed to assume! UGH!!!!
