Default Engagements... how long and how old?

Just curious for the married and engaged folks here, how long did you date your husband/fiance before you were engaged, and how old were you when you got married (or how old will you be)?

We met 10 years before we married, and had on/off relationship during then.

Finally he asked me if we could get back together, and I said, "not if it's starting over- It had better lead to marriage." He said OK. We became engaged about 4 months later, and married 11 months after that. He was in NJ , I was in CA and we had logistics to work out, I had to leave my job and move to NJ.

I was 31, he was 30 when we married.

Fortunately I convinced him to move to CA After 2-1/2 years of marriage.

That's nice to know~! Personally, I would move to the Bay area in an instant compared to NYC or NJ!

I am in a similar situation as you were with your DH.

My DH and I have been together 8 years before we married and had a long distance relationship.

Because of family (mainly mine) being so controlling and unsupportive, we decided to elope, and I moved closer to him (Toronto).
We worked on a compromise (because of business and job issues) closer to the ON/NY border.

Anyhow, we didn't have any set time or pressure. Maybe it was partly due to the long distance situation, but we refused to let us down.

As long as you (the individual) and your SO are committed and patient, no time (whether long or short) should make a difference!

I got married at 20. We had been together for 3 years before we got married. We've been very happily married now for 6 years and have a baby on the way.

The right time is different for everyone.

It's definitely different for everyone.

Me - dated a tad over 3 years, got engaged, married 10 mos later at age 30.

One of my bfs didn't meet "the one" till right before turning 34. They were engaged about a yr after dating, married about 6 mos later, she was 35.

Well I'm NEWLY engaged (just got so on MONDAY!) and I'm 22. My boyfriend and I had been together exactly 2 years, but best friends for 6 or so.

We plan on a normal-long engagement, about a year or so.

We had been together for almost exactly 2 years when we got married. I was 30 (almost 31) and DH was 37 (almost 38). We were only engaged from Oct - Feb. We really didn't see the point of a long engagement. Looking back, if we had been planning the wedding 6 months or a year or longer in advance, we probably would have spent more $$$ on it! There were a few things that were just done very simply because we actually only planned the wedding for about 1.5 months. Centerpieces were simple, invitations were simple, no place cards/seating chart, etc. None of that was needed anyway, and we had a very elegant wedding & reception.

We were together for almost 2 1/2 years when he proposed. We were only engaged for a couple of months before we got married. We already knew that we were going to get married and it was easy to plan since we had a pretty small wedding.

I was 34 and he was 46 when we got married. We've been married a year and a half now.

I married my first husband with no engagement, though we'd known each other about a year. I was 19 and he was 35.

My second husband and I decided to be an exclusive couple after knowing each other two years and maintained another two years of our long distance relationship until my eldest son went off to college. At that point I moved to Philadelphia to see if we could survive actually seeing each other on a daily basis. We did, announced our engagement and married a year later (last July). I was 52 at the time of the marriage and he was 43.

DH and I had a really fast courtship. We met in December, got engaged in February and were married in July. Next month will be our 7th wedding anniversary.

Eta: I was 21 when I got married.
