Default 1 in 3 of us have been touched by cancer

Earlier this year my uncle died of colon cancer. My dad has been on chemo for lung cancer and I am so happy it is all going well so far.
last week my best friend was diagnosed with bowel cancer and has started tratment. I am feeling really weird right now. two years ago it was something I heard about. My grandmother died of skin cancer but she grew up in the sun and I was so young it didnt affect me.
The ad says 1 in 3 of us has been touched by cancer. This means it happens to us or someone we love. I am not doing very well statistically.
My friend is really healthy, eats well, exercises, always smiling. So unfair. The stress and anxiety my loved ones have been through honestly seems worse than the disease.
I feel sad but it makes me appreciate all I have.
I feel better now I have just put it in words....Thanks for reading my post.

MEMS, I am so sorry you have been so touched by this terrible disease. Have you been active in any community programs or any events?

I have found that being active in my local Relay for Life has been so fulfilling for my heart. To spend my time not doing something that's all about me is a highly gratifying experience. I love the exercise, the companionship, and the strength. I seriously recommend giving it a try if you have never participated.

My heart goes out to you. I have lost one great-grandmother and my grandmother's best friend to cancer, and had another great-grandmother kick cancer's ass. Hang in there.

*hugs*

Hi, I must look into doing more. Thanks for the encouragement, my friend really must get better she is only 37. Ironically she did a cancer run herself yesterday, something she had arranged before she knew. She is such a giving person, and always so happy. I met her today and she just cried when I gave her a gift. Its seriously damaging to see these people I love like this. I still see my dad with no hair, he is still smiling. They have to fight emotionally before the battle even starts.

I have close friends with cancer everywhere it seems. My friend and neighbor across the street, one of my close girlfriends is battling it now for the second time too. I know of at least 4 other cases also. Scary.

I've been touched by cancer more times in my life than I care to think about. I do what I can to prevent having cancer (don't smoke, stay out of the sun, etc), and I donate where I can. Cancer can be such a horrible thing to live through, but it's always been a wakeup call to me: Live life to the fullest, everyday. Tomorrow isn't a guarantee.

Yes I totally agree with you. Its funny how when we are children its all carefree but as we get older we get touched by all these things and our parents and grandparents get old etc. We really do need to enjoy every minute. We never know what is round the corner.

Sorry to hear that. One of the most horrible things for the sufferer is knowing time is running out. Not always but when I think about it I imagine that is how I would feel. It can be very hard to keep positive and yet the survivors are the ones who are positive..

About a month after my dad's dad died, my uncle and grandma were cleaning out his closet and they found that he had been hoarding tons of morphine. He tried so hard to stay positive but he was definitely hoarding that for the day it got to be too much.

My mom had the early signs of breast cancer but thankfully handled it (no more)

My daddy had prostate cancer (but his poor diet is what lead to his demise. and my Mom's best friend died from Leukemia.

My dad's death was what really hit me hard. I definitely appreciate life more, because I understand that life is fragile and not forever. I am definitely trying to take good care of my self and get check ups often.

Mine too, though he's doing much better after his surgery this past January.

My grandpa had prostate and lung cancer as well.

MEMS, I'm so sorry you've had to go through all of that, but we're here for you if you need to talk.

knowing that days are numbered is what hurts but again it does make me feel probably we are served what we ordered some way or the other
some where our actions direct or indirect are to be accounted for sooo much of widespread of this disease

That's a very sobering statistic. I grew up feeling I would one day get cancer of some type because everyone on my mother's side of the family had cancer. She had breast cancer but lived with it in remission most of the time for 22 years after diagnosis.

We can get regular check-ups including mammograms, not smoke, and know what to look for with other types of cancer. Beyond that, it's out of our hands.
