I wanted to say something about this confusing hardware issue a while ago, but I wasn't sure where to post it.

A good month or two ago, we'd simply differentiate between the two types of hardware as "Old Hardware" and "New Hardware." But now there appears to be a new "New Hardware" which is the "Mixed Hardware." Even sometimes I get confused by it. (And some tPFers call the new "Mixed Hardware" as the "New Hardware." So now there's 2 generations of new hardware, kwim?)

Would it make more sense for us to create a reference thread on hardware with pics and then call them by generations? Or would that not make sense for anyone?

-First generation hardware would be the old, original brass hardware with lobster clasp and long tassels.
-Second generation hardware would be the light gold, RM signature hardware with square tabs (and no tassels).
-Third generation hardware would be the mixed hardware which consists of lobsters clasps, shorter tassels. (And I hear that this hardware will be "shinier" than the brass?)

This way, if there are more future hardware changes, we can simply add a new generation, instead of coming up with different names to call it, like "Mixed-and-more-changes Hardware." If not, that's okay. This is just a friendly little brainstorm. I was just thinking this the other day at work because I was getting so confused when Minkettes said "New Hardware," and I'd second-guess myself and forget which new hardware they were talking about, KWIM?

I think we should stop refering to the "MIXED" hardware as 'new'.. It is too confusing. I think they should be called, Old hardware, New & mixed..

Or as luna suggested, 1st, 2nd & 3rd generation.. but it might be hard to get everyone on board.. I'm game though.. WHATEVER makes it easier!!!!!!!!

^^ I agree.. it also might be easier to just call new hw signature since new does have implications that it is the current hw.

Maybe we should do a poll on it? I would start one, but I'm fairly new to RM so I don't feel like I've earned a place here yet

Thanks for defining this!! Just a question since I'm a newbie and may be ordering a couple of bags over the next couple of weeks... Has anyone had a problem ordering bags online that appear to show one set of hardware, but arrive with another?? I guess I'm just wondering if I should always trust their stock photos and description?? I'm now on the hunt for a Nikki with the old hardware, so I don't want to get any surprises. TIA!!

Not that it matters but that is a fairly old thread..

baglady- It does happen every once in a while so if you are worried just call to confirm and it really shouldn't be a problem. More than anything it happens with special orders.. you shouln't hav a problem buying a reg bag on a website as usually that bag will ONLY come in one kind of hardware. HTH!

Persnally I think the hardware should be called this:

-ORIGINAL HARDWARE
-SIGNATURE HARDWARE
-MIXED HARDWARE

I think this makes the most sense and is the least confusing...

Thanks LR!!! Makes sense to me.

On a side note I really like the "mixed" hardware. A little of both worlds!!

Good idea. However.... I think there will always be confusion for newbies. What makes them "old"... "new"... "mixed?" Maybe we could STICKY this in ref lib along with lining etc. ??

Also the Nikkis with the Signature and mixed hardwares don't have the same strap holders.
Original Nikki HW round
Signature-Square
Mixed -trapaziod, sometimes square?

^^ totally...
the Nikkis we saw from the Spring collection were square again, but the leather that attaches them to the bag was thicker (so they wouldn't slide around)...
