For those of you with experience of the black coated PS1 hardware: how well does it hold up to use? Is it more prone to scratching and marking than the brass or silver hardware? Please share your experience.

TIA.

I have two PS1:s with black coated hw, my XL is two years old and my patent medium is one year old. I have to look very closely to see any chipping, and it's inside the rings where the strap hw clips on. The overall look is still as new though.

Thanks Ellie, that's reassuring and good to know.

I wanted black hardware, but I was sent one that was supposed to be from new inventory but was already chipping on the clasp and rings! I really wanted to keep it but was worried it would only get worse. I wonder if there are even differences among the batches of black hardware, since some seem resistant and others not so much.

^I'm not sure about the new gunmetal hardware but I think PS improved the old black coated hw over the years, in the end it was only visible locally when looking closeup. I think someone here also said the new gunmetal hw was silver colored under, not brass like the black coated hw?

Oh so the old black coated is brass under? Someone mentioned that underneath was silver but it makes sense that it would be brass as all their other hardware is brass.

Does the gunmetal have a coating on as well? It's not just a darker, aged silver look?

I remembered at least the older black coated hw was brass under, but perhaps it changed over the years? The gunmetal is aged silver but a scratch will be lighter in color, it's not a coated with paint like the black hw though.

Thanks Ellie. Really appreciate your help.

Do you think the gunmetal is a replacement for the black coated or are both hardware versions still being produced?

I have just got the PS1 black with the new gun metal finish a few months ago. From what I understand was they were having alot of color chipping problem with the coated black paint.

The gun metal is not painted on its actually really dark metal, on the edgy you can see alittle silver

I did end up getting a pouch with gunmetal hardware too and really like it. In some light it looks almost black. It's definitely not a high contrast to the black, as silver would be.
