Default Would you turn your own child in?

Quote:
CHESTERFIELD, S.C. (CBS News) ― An 18-year-old accused of planning to bomb his high school was charged Tuesday with attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction, which carries a possible life sentence, as more details of his potentially deadly plans emerged.

Ryan Schallenberger's journal contained an entry made last month that contained a timeline for an attack that included how he would lock his school's doors and where he would place more than five explosives in the building, prosecutor Jay Hodge said during a court hearing for the teen.
Quote:
Schallenberger was arrested Saturday after his parents called police because he had ordered 10 pounds of ammonium nitrate through eBay, authorities said. Ammonium nitrate is a fertilizer that was a component in the deadly 1995 Oklahoma City bombing.

I can't even imagine how difficult that would be, but I would hope that I would do what I think now is the right thing and turn them in. But god, oh that would be hard.

Absolutely but it would probably be one of the hardest decisions of a parent's life. I don't think of it as turning on your children, I think of it as protecting them from themselves and taking the first step into getting them the help they need

I think I would have taken action to ensure the bombing never happened, but I am not sure I would have done that by calling the police - especially if it risked life in prison. There are learning moments and people who need help, and I don't think that life in prison teaches much or provides the help someone like that needs. The event had not yet happened, and in all honesty I could not have lived with myself if I sent my son to prison for life over something that had not yet occurred.

Wow ! I think I would be able to live with the decision to turn him in rather than live with the guilt and devastation if he actually carried through his plans. I cannot imagine the devasation these people's families go through after something like this, they (the families) are innocent parties as well as the victims and victim's families for the most part.

if he went as far as to order fertilizer, then he was serious. And getting psychological help isn't always the answer. Didn't one of the Columbine kids go to a therapist for a long time? Not to mention if the "urge" never goes away he would eventually do it and learn not to write about it and to order the explosives from somewhere else.

I would. There was a very tragic case in my school recently where a young woman was the victim of a hit and run. The vehicle involved belonged to a young man who drove it home. His parents helped him repair the damages to his car in secret and told the other young people who were in the car not to come forward.

I think the responsibility of a parent is to raise a person who is a good member of society, first and foremost. If there is something going/gone wrong it is best to inform people who can rectify the situation before it gets out of control.

Yes. There's no alternative in my mind. You can't keep him locked up, so how would you ensure it would never happen, and if it did it'd partly be your fault.

yes as hard as it would be i think i would have to call the police. like others have stated, i would NOT be able to live with the guilt and the shame if the building had been blown up.
