Lightbulb Woman Unaware of Pregnancy Gives Birth at Party

A 30-year-old woman who was unaware she was pregnant gave birth at a friend’s costume party, BBC News reported on Tuesday.
Ally Ashwell of Newcastle, England, was bar-hopping — in a bumblebee costume — when she began to feel sick.
She returned to her hotel room to find she was in labor, and the contractions came so fast she was forced to deliver in the hotel.

Ashwell’s baby, Owen, was born prematurely at 26 weeks, but doctors at the Lancashire hospital where he is being cared for are optimistic about his future.
"It is very unusual for a baby to be born in this situation," a spokesman for Blackpool Victoria Hospital told BBC News. "I think Owen surprised us all by the progress he has made."

I always thought these stories seemed far fetched, and now that I've been pregnant, I'm convinced that you would have to be in serious denial to not know you were pregnant. Even if your periods were irregular, 6 months is a long time to go without one. Not to mention the sore breasts, bloating, and all the rest of the stuff that goes with it.

I don't ever believe these stories about being pregnant and not knowing it. I can't claim to understand the psychological underpinnings of the inability/refusal to acknowledge/admit the pregnancy but --short of being in a coma-- I don't buy that it's possible to be THAT disconnected from one's body!

I don't buy it either. At 26 weeks you would feel kicking and there would be no mistaking your belly. She must have been in serious emotional denial.

I agree with everyone about her being in denial about the pregnancy symptoms she was feeling and dismissing them. What concerns me is that she was bar-hopping which suggests to me that she might have been drinking during her pregnancy. I hope the docs are right being 'optimistic' about the child's future.

I mean seriously how can you NOT KNOW you are preggers...for 26 weeks? That just seems so bizarre to me.

I was watching a show the other night called "I didn't know I was pregnant" or something. Amazing. I don't understand how these women don't know!

Apart from the kicking, surely going to the toilet 500 times a day would give a gal a clue?
I do hope the bub is ok.

Totally amazing! I do recalled that years ago, as I was flipping through my daily newspapers. There was this story that caught my eye. Women gave birth while playing tennis She too claimed that she didn't know she was preggers. She says she always has irregular periods, was on the plump side and didn't feel sick during the last 9 mths.

i know a few women who have their periods when their pregnant, and its not discharge or bleeding but actual periods! and for many, if its their first, they start showing at 7 months... so she might have just thought she gained weight? i dont know... a bit weird.. 3 months i can understand but maybe 26 weeks is a little extreme..

I'm not sure women who can't even recognize signs of pregnancy are mentally-equipped to be mothers. A screw must be loose.

My old roommate didn't know she was pregnant until she was over 6 months along. She had always had problems with her periods and has PCOS. She was told she would never have kids. Yea..well, they were wrong! Since she is on the heavier side from PCOS, she only gained 7 lbs her entire pregnancy. She said she felt a "flutter" in her stomach and her sister made her take a test. When we moved out, she was about 7.5 months and i had NO clue she was pregnant! Can you imagine my surprise when a month later i hear she had a baby!? So it can happen..
