Default When is first doctors appointment?
I went into the clinic today and found out I was for sure pregnant . Anyway, I didn't see my OB/GYN, or any doctor for that matter. They basically made me pee in a cup, sat in the waiting room until someone told me to go wait in another waiting room, and then was told I could leave and just call in to get my results.

My next appointment isn't until the beginning of Nov! Is this normal? I am just sitting here pretty lost right now, because I realized I don't know anything about being pregnant (yes, this is my first). I thought they should at least sit me down and give me some pamphlets, tell me what not to eat, how much weight to gain, and answer at least some of my questions! All they did was give me a prescription for prenatal vitamins, which I had already been taking.

I would usually call my mom and ask her many questions, but I have yet to tell her. I'm trying to do it in a special way, considering that this will be her first grandchild. I am planning on buying some pregnancy books, but was just wondering if it is normal to feel so lost. And, is it normal to have your first appointment at 12 weeks? Also, did your husband/so attend any or all of your appointments?

^^Same here with both PG's...OB's saw me at 10-12 weeks.

Also, I would buy some books on being PG - that would definitely help you out and answer some of your questions or just come to this subforum My DH went to every appt with me for our DS since he was our first; but with this PG, he has only been going to the peri (high risk OB) with me.

Oh, yes, it is totally normal to feel overwhelmed and lost. As the weeks go on, though, I think you will get used to being PG and all that goes along with it!

Hope you have a H&H 9 months!

My pregnancy was confirmed at 6 weeks by my gyno dr with an ultrasound, Then I had to make an appt to see my OB dr at about 8 weeks. I could have skipped the first appt and just went to the OB at around 8 weeks, but that time frame to wait is pretty normal. My advice would be to buy the book What to Expect....it has been a life saver for me.

And Congrats on the pregnancy!!

Congrats! Hope you have a happy and healthy 9 months.
I went into to a lab for a urine sample. Follow by that, my health care provider gave me a call and schedule an appointment with an OB.
My pregnancy was confirmed at 6 weeks, with an ultra sound. I had to return at 8 weeks to confirm a heart beat. If you're concern, give your OB a call and schedule an appointment.

first off, congrats!!!

anyway for me i found out i was pregnant right away (4 weeks along), i called my OB as soon as i got a positive pregnancy test, and they scheduled me for an appt @ 6 weeks to confirm the pregnancy (via ultrasound). then after that, my next appt was at 10 weeks, where i didn't have an ultrasound, just a doppler to listen to the heartbeat. then at 12 weeks i had the nuchal translucency ultrasound (was optional). i then had appts at 14, 18, and 22 weeks. pretty much it seems like in the first and second trimesters you have doctors appts every 4 weeks, then once you're in 3rd trimester it's every 2 weeks until the last month it's every week. though i think with different doctors and different situations (high risk pregnancies, etc) it will vary.

and to answer your other question, my DH has been to every single ob appt except for one, and that was only because he had to be out of town for work (and it wasn't a big appt, i think it was my 14 week one where there was no ultrasound, just regular tests).

and as for pregnancy books, there are so many different kinds, i agree it is very overwhelming! it seems like there are 2 main types of pregnancy books, there are the reference books (eg What to Expect When You're Expecting) and the more humorous books that are much more fun to read yet still informative (good ones are Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy, and Jenny McCarthy's Belly Laughs).

Congratulations on your pregnancy! The first visit timing depends on the practice, mine usually does the visit between 6-8 weeks. I found out I was pregnant at 4 weeks, 4 days, had my first visit at 7 weeks and first ultrasound at 8 weeks 5 days. They didn't even confirm my pregnancy at the first visit!

DH has been to almost every appointment and ultrasound except for the first visit, an unexpected ultrasound, and one ultrasound he couldn't make. It was a good opportunity for him to ask questions and really experience that part of the pregnancy.

Have a happy and healthy nine months!

Congratulations!!

I had my first ultrasound at 7 weeks, then a follow-up appointment with my doctor that same day. This week (8 weeks) I had an appointment with my doctor's OB nurse, kind of a "Welcome to our OB program" type of thing where we went over a packet of information, she sent in a prescription for prenatal vitamins that I choose from some samples they gave me the week before, and just a general "what to expect" over the course of the 40 weeks as far as appointments. They took my urine & did bloodwork at both appointments.

My next appointment is at 10 weeks with my doctor before she goes on maternity leave herself and I think they said for the first couple of months they'll have me coming in once a month, then it goes to every two weeks. They mentioned that we'll start doing the doppler thing next time I'm in there. My next ultrasound isn't until the 16-20 week one though. I think every office probably has their own procedure as to when they routinely see people.

I definitely second the book "What to Expect when you're expecting", it's been neat to look through for both DH & myself. DH has gone to just the first ultrasound appointment so far, so he doesn't have to leave work to go to just the chit chat meetings... but once we're further along probably after our next ultrasound, I'll probably have him come a bit more often/he'll probably want to stop in and be there for the questions part.

Oh... and as far as things to avoid - you can probably do a google search if you're questioning something. This isn't an all inclusive list... but is what was generally suggested to me:
- Heat up lunch meat or sandwiches from Subway in the microwave for 10-15 seconds before eating if you've got to have one
- Avoid large fish like "shark" that hold in mercury, and don't eat anything raw... smaller cooked fish like tilapia is okay
- My dr didn't want me to have my hair dyed before about 16-18 weeks (boo); Pedicures were okay
- Avoid caffeine when possible and limit intake, no diet sodas because of the artificial sweetener
- Don't use Sweet N Low or Equal; Splenda was okay to use
- If you've got a headache, use Tylenol (no Advil/ibuprofen) and Tums are okay to use whenever needed... thank goodness.

Have a happy & healthy 9 months!!

^good advice!

first off, congratulations!!

the wait, unfortunately, is the norm.

i was told that you shouldn't gain any weight in the first trimester. oops. i failed that. lol

i really haven't read books on pregnancy, but i have skimmed a few and read quite a bit online, especially in the beginning. you just have to do what's right for you. once you do go in for your first appointment a lot of questions should be answered.

my dh goes with me to every appointment, this is also our first.

My first appointment was at 12 weeks. We were in the process of moving across the country, so that wasn't the doctor's fault, but they said they don't see anyone until 10 weeks. Before that they may not be able to see or hear the heartbeat, which would only freak you out. So don't worry - look forward to your appointment and it'll be here before you know it!

I told my parents by emailing a picture of the test that said Pregnant!

Good luck!

Congrats!!! Hope you have a healthy and happy pregnancy!!! This is such an exciting time in your life! Yes, it's normal not to see a doctor until you are about 8 weeks along. I saw a doctor with both pregnancies at about 8-10 weeks along. You can get some pregnancy books and get some over the counter prenatals as well. Your first appointment will come faster than you think! When I was pregnant with my first I was living in London at the time. We just called my parents and when my mom answered I said "hi grandma!!" and she understood immediately and freaked out!!! It was great!
