Is there anyone else who struggles to lose weight while nursing? I have been watching every morsel of food and exercising but the scale is stuck. I had a similar situation with my son 3 years ago but thought it was because I really wasn't watching my diet too carefully. Obviously I can't limit my calories too much but I'm eating between 1500-1800 per day which is recommended for nursing moms. Any suggestions?

Don't forget that you won't lose the last 5-15 lbs (depends on the person) until you completely stop BFing!!! HTH!

I am hoping I could go back to my pre-pregnancy weight after I stop breastfeeding as I am still 3kg/6.6lbs heavier.

*hand raised* ME! I have about 15lbs to go and really don't eat much differently from prepreggers but my body seems to be hanging on to it. My mother said she was the same way. I only have 4 months to meet my goal of 9 months of BF.

Thanks everyone, I hear tales of women whose weight just "fell off" from nursing. I breastfed my son for 15 months and hope to nurse my daughter for at least 12, so I guess I'll just keep at it.

the fact that you lose weigth quicker was one of the things i thought i could count on with breast feeding.. is that not the case? ( its not my sole reason for wanting to breast feed but it gives it an edge :) )

^ If you're breastfeeding, sometimes you hang onto a couple of extra pounds (it's your body's way of ensuring you have enough to make milk for baby). I'm in this boat right now. I'm 11 months into BFing and I still have 5 pounds left to lose...the scale hasn't budged in months but I'm ok with that for now. In contrast, a co-worker of mine gave birth and was back to her pre-pregnancy shape in 6-7 weeks. No extra weight, no nothing! She also BFs but her body just didn't hang onto the weight.

I am breastfeeding my second one and he is 3 weeks old. I am 15 lbs over my pre pregnancy weight but I remember with my first, the weight never came down to my pre pregnancy weight although I breastfed for 11 months. It all depends on individual's body; some women hang on to the weight even breastfeeding (me!) and some ppl just lose it all quickly without even trying!

It depends ... with my first two the weight fell off to where i was 3 kg under my pre-preggo weight. Now my third is 11 months and i still have about 4kg to lose ...

I also have had friends that lost it all and below their prepreggers weight while BF and then when they stopped they gained back 15 -20 lbs. So it's just everyone's body is different. Now I'll be totally bummed if it's a majorly hard challenge to loose the last 15 after I stop BF. I'll give it some time but I do expect at least 10 to come off easily.

One reason I stopped breastfeeding is because I was wasting away.
DD was a piglet though X |

... thought I would bring back this thread.
I gained 24lbs total with my DD and was 12lbs over my pre-preg weight at 1wk postpartum. I have been BFing exclusively and the scale has not budged, not even 1lb, and I am 7wks postpartum! I too figured BFing would help lose the pounds. I have been very careful with what I eat (perhaps too careful... hard to get a meal in with all the baby care and feedings), and I have been exercising most days (like 5days/wk) when DH comes home. I am so frustrated, I did not expect to lose all the wt overnight, but I did expect a gradual loss, not a complete stand-still! |

I don't know if it's the breastfeeding or the housework of being an SAHM. I was size 8 pre-preg and now I'm a 6 although I'm eating for 3. Always hungry dammmit.

I'm one of the lucky ones; I lost all my weight all six times even while exclusively breastfeeding. I guess just like everything else, everyone is different.
