Baby bling: The gold-plated pram was bought from Harrods for £6,000


All parents find they have to splash out a little when a new baby comes along. But for one new arrival, it is obvious that only the very best would do.

Yesterday it was revealed that this gold-plated pram, which boasts a fitted sound system and satin interior, has been snapped up after just two weeks on sale at Harrods for a staggering £6,000. ($12,000)


Described as "the ultimate in "baby bling", the converted Silver Cross Silver Shadow is dripping in £4,000-worth of 24-carat gold, which covers every panel as well as its wheels and spokes.
Its leather hood is trimmed in super-soft ermine fur, it has a blue satin lining - and its base even conceals a clockwork music box which plays soothing nursery rhymes.
The show-stopping pram was created by Graham Richardson and Alison Murfet, who run a pram-restoring business in Holbeach, Lincolnshire.
It was bought around six weeks ago at the famous Knightsbridge store by a South African businessman, who has not been named.
The Silver Cross brand dates back to 1877 and generations have grown up being gently wheeled around in its baby carriages.
In the 1920s, it was crowned the number one manufacturer of baby carriages for Royals after one was supplied to George VI and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.
The Queen later chose a Silver Cross pram when Prince Charles was born in 1948. However, his was not covered in gold. The cost of the pram exceeds that of any other baby carriage available in Harrods.
Mr Richardson, 59, said a standard pram was first sent away to a gold plating specialist, who spent two weeks covering every panel in gold.
"It looks stunning in the daylight, it really is the ultimate in baby bling," he said.
"We don't know much about who bought it, but I'm sure it's something the Beckhams would be proud of.
"We may make another one if someone commissions it, they'll be putting diamond wheels on it next."
A Harrods spokesman said it was not certain whether the pram was bought for a baby, or as a collector's item by the older gentleman who purchased it.
"Whilst this particular item wouldn't appeal to all customers, we are fortunate enough to have a diverse range of customers who seek out the rare and unusual, which this certainly is," she said. "We do sell other Silver Cross prams which are fairly expensive but they are around £2,500 compared to the £6,000. They are popular - they are very Mary Poppins."
