Default newborn's going home outfit help
Hi everyone!

My due date is coming up and I'm starting to pack my hospital overnight bag. I realize that I need some help picking out my baby's first outfit!

I hear that onesies are no good because it can irritate the umbilical nubby. I live in SF so it will probably be pretty cold when I bring her home (due date is 12/28).

Most of the clothes we have for her now are a lil bigger (3mos and up), so we'll most likely go out and buy something.
What type of clothing (material, size, etc) should I be looking for?

Any suggestions greatly appreciated!!

Thanks!! =)

Um.... Good question. I live in the East Bay and will also be cold. I plan on bring a few new born outfits in addition to a few baby blankets. I think that should be good enough, since I don't plan on being outside for too long.

I didn't hear that onesies are bad for umbilical cords???

A soft pair of cotton, footed pajamas and a hat.
I bought my daughter a cute pair of pink pants and top from Baby Gap that was the smallest size they had (up to 7 pounds). Turns out it was huge on her at 5 pounds 2 ounces. I used onesies on both of my infants and had no issues with the umbilical cord stump.

They are definitely more cumbersome and you have to be careful putting th eonesie on and off as you can accidentally rip the cord. We kept DS in tshirts and diapers and swaddled until the cord fell off. I can't remember what we took him home in....just be sure to keep the feet and head bundled in the cold weather.

I brought two outfits with me, one in a newborn size, one in a 3 month size. Both were footie PJs and I put a hat and gloves on him. He ended up going home in the newborn sized one (which was too big for him). The material on the outside felt more like a soft towel. Just keep an extra blanket on him until you arrive home :).

^ the t shirts they supply at the hospital (ask for extras before you leave) and swaddling blankets I found to be best for 1. As often as you change diapers the first few weeks and 2. Avoiding tugging on/around the umbilical cord. i'm sure some people have used onesies with a newborn...I just found them cumbersome the first month or so.

good to know! As far as I know, all the new born clothes I've bought are almost all onesies...! I guess we just have to be careful!

lol i just asked my sister about this (mother of three) and she said, "of course you can use onesies!" just be careful with the diaper and putting on the onesie. i guess there's some sort of technique that she'll show me at the hospital.

i spent lots of time picking a "going home outfit" and when we were ready to leave hospital, she was so fast asleep and i realised it didnt really matter and i wasnt going to disturb her just to change her into this outfit....she came home in her bonds suit that she was already in, all i used in hospital (which im assuming is a onesie??? we dont use that term in aust) lol.....they are the most convienient. and i wouldnt worry about the belly, she would be wearing a singlet too, so it wouldnt be rubbing on the suit.
