Default just want your opinion...
no wrong answers here.

i really like the name jade as a first name if we have a girl. my dh likes it too, but i also made the mistake in telling him that i may not use jade and name her after his mother, who passed away when he was a teenager. so of course, due to my big mouth, he's biased and no longer cares for the name jade, unless we use it as a middle name. in the end i know he'll support whatever decision i make but now i'm really torn. i know i have some time to think about this but i never thought that naming a child could feel so overwhelming!

when you think of the name jade what images (if any) does it conjure up for you? something positive, negative or indifferent? too trendy or different?

thank you. :)

Was Jade his mothers name? No, right? Im confused. Jade is a simple and lovely name.

In terms of naming a person after a family member, I have mixed feelings about that. I had a cousin that is kind of bad news and wasnt really close to the family, and he named is kid after our grandpa and the whole family was like why did you do that? Does that make sense? I suppose in most situations though, it is a nice way of honoring the person but you have to remember that persons memory is shared by the whole family. Sorry if thats random - your question just brought up that memory for me.

my bad. jade is not his mother's name. jade is the name i've liked for a long time but then i started having second thoughts. that's when i told dh that i was going to use his mom's name instead of jade. or maybe have jade as a middle name.

We had a few names in mind but didn't wind up naming DS until we met him - maybe do that with Jade and MIL's name? After a day of pondering and getting to know our little guy, we felt like he fit the name "Victor" versus all the other names on the list.

We did the same thing. Our daughter was either going to be Lilly or Ava. After she was born, we both felt like she looked and acted more like an Ava, so that's what she became. It was neat that we both felt the same way.
Anyway, I like the name Jade and it doesn't really conjure up any images for me.

I like the name Jade. The only images it conjures up for me is a middle age hippie woman who wears a lot of rings. I don't know where that comes from. Maybe Drew Barrymore's mother or a movie I saw once. I think that you should discuss the ramifications of naming your child after your husband's mother. For me that would be weird

Naming a child after a parent that has passed seems like a nice idea but it depends on what the family dynamic is - are there other siblings who may want to do the same? I've had the thought that I'd like to name a daughter (if I have one) after my stepmom because we were close but I don't want to take that choice away from my stepbrother if he wants to do that.

I do like the name Jade though...

Jade is a cute name! I like when people use family names. But mainly for middle names. I would want to choose the first name myself. My DS's middle name is my great grandmother's maiden name. And I think it fits perfectly with his first name. Maybe compromise with your DH and use his mother's name AND Jade.

thank you so much for your replies.

i'm still torn but i have some time left to think about it. i guess somewhere somehow the seed of doubt has been planted. i suppose i don't want my child teased or telling me she hates her name, like i did with my mom. lol

my dh's family is very small and his only sibling, a brother, is finished having children. i never met my husband's mom but she sounded like an incredible lady and i thought honoring her would make my husband feel proud. and now, he's so proud he can barely contain himself! i don't want to burst his bubble b/c i may not choose his mom's name, it was an idea i had and i should've kept it to myself at the time.

with that said, my husband will support any decision i make. i've also thought of waiting till we meet the baby and have her decide for us, so i can definitely understand how some of you did that.

I don't want this to come across wrong but you keep saying the name you choose and he will support you but what about what he thinks. It should be something you both like and agree upon.

I am sort of on the fence about the name Jade. It's different and unique, and not many people have it ... yet IMO it's just kinda blah and not too exciting. I hope that wasn't too harsh, it wasn't meant to be at all. After all, it will be your baby so you should name her whatever you want
