We went to our weekly appt today and Doc said Monday we had to be induced (or I could elect for a C section). My BP has been steadily rising, Protein in the Urine, awful Edema in my legs/ankles and she was not willing to wait any longer. Since we are having a large baby (around 9-10 lbs) she offered me a choice as to which I would prefer and at first I wanted an induction as I was hoping for a VB but now I'm not so sure. I am only 1 cm dilated and around 60% effaced and so she said she would start with a drug to ripen my cervix and then depending on if it worked go with the pitocin.
Honestly I am so confused which to go with and with him being so big I'm scared of the possible complications from not only his size but just being induced. I would really prefer a VB but at this point I'm wondering if a C is the way to go?? I would love to hear about your experiences and any advice you might have. |

I high blood pressure issues and was induced, and gave birth with the assistance of forceps and had an episiotomy because of the baby's sudden heart rate drop. It was a scary birth experience, but DS is okay! I'm still glad I went the natural route because healing was quick, and I was on my feet in no time.
Also, the ultrasound scans they do on size for the baby is not 100% accurate.. they could be more or less a pound in difference. They said DS was at least 5 lbs, and when he was born he was 4 lbs 6 oz. If you opt for a C-Section, healing of the incision will take longer as opposed to vaginal delivery healing. That is definitely something to consider. But.. if the baby is on the large side, delivering naturally might be more difficult. I know you say are experiencing health complications.. but its still possible to do vaginal delivery. Best of Luck!!! There is no wrong choice!

Thanks so much Jen for sharing your experience
I'm really scared and I'm just not sure which to choose. I thought we'd be able to wait it out and go into labor naturally and so I had not really given induction any thought (kicking myself now of course). I've been doing some looking online and of course it seems I'm only finding scary info. Hearing about all of your ladies different experiences really helps and also seems to calm me down a little.

Sorry to hear you're having a bit of a rough time, tatortot! I would try to avoid a c-section if you can...its a lot of recovery time based on what I've heard (my mother in law is a labor/delivery nurse for the last 25 years and its what she told me) as opposed to a vaginal delivery. I also had high blood pressure towards the end of my pregnancy with DS and was put on bedrest....thankfully that worked and he came on his own without me having to be induced. With this last pregnancy, they did an ultrasound and said DD was almost 9 pounds based on their measurements and when she came out she was 6 lbs 14 oz!!!! BIG difference!!! Don't go based on what the doctor says the ultrasound comes out as....it may not be accurate!!

i agree with diva...a c-section is major surgery, so try to avoid that if possible. i was also told that i was having a large baby, well over 8lbs. but she was 7lbs12oz. so the weight may be off by some. GL i wish all the best for you and baby :)

Personally, I would not elect to have a c-section...like others said, it is major surgery with a longer recovery time than a routine VB. Also, our DS was supposed to be 9 1/2 lbs when born, but he was only 8 lbs so the doctors can be off on the weight! I was induced at 38 weeks with DS - I was 50% effaced and 2-3 cm dialated. I know others have had bad experiences with induction, but my induction went smoothly. They started pitocin at 9:30 am, I pushed from 3 pm to 5:11 pm and that's when DS was born...
GL in whatever you choose to do!!! Congrats! |

I too would try to avoid the c-section. It's a longer recovery time, and then in the future if you want to deliver vaginally, you may have a hard time finding a doctor or hospital that will help you depending on where you live. Getting medical insurance is also becoming more difficult for women who have had a previous c-section. I've given birth to a 9lb 12oz baby and a 10lb 5oz baby and those births weren't any different than my other babies who ranged in weight from 7lb 9oz to 8 and 1/2 lbs, so don't worry about having a big baby, it can be done!

I've delivered bother ways; via induction - cytotec & pitocin and I've delivered c-sect. . . I'd choose induction/vaginal everytime!
If things get dangerous they'll do a c anyhow, but I'd never elect one. |

Thanks so much for all of the info ladies
After sleeping on it I think we will try for the induction and pass on the C sec. As far as him being big I still really wanted to try for a VB so hopefully everything will work out and it will be possible.I've got my fingers crossed for smooth sailing and I can't wait to hold the little guy. |
