Default Indian baby 'back from the dead'

Indian baby 'back from the dead'

Hospital authorities in India have ordered an independent inquiry after a baby was declared dead, only to make an apparently miraculous return to life.

The baby girl - born in the city of Mumbai (Bombay) - was diagnosed as stillborn on Monday night.
But she astonished her distraught family by gurgling as they took her off to the cemetery the next day.
It is thought she revived after the effect of drugs - given to her mother during a complicated labour - wore off.
Hospital authorities say they are now investigating possible negligence by staff who attended the birth.

'Limp at birth'

"The doctors who were on duty are being questioned and the inquiry will last the entire day."
Correspondents say that it is not clear when or even if the results of the independent inquiry will be made public.
Dr Merchant said that the 30-year-old mother of the child - who was seven months pregnant - suffered life threatening convulsions and high blood pressure over the weekend, which required powerful medicines.
He said that that the doctors believed that the baby - who was limp at birth - had no heart beat and no pulse.
She was given a death certificate on Tuesday morning and two hours later her body was handed over to her parents.
But later, when the effect of medicines wore off, Dr Merchant said that the baby "showed attempts to breathe".
"Under such circumstances, it would appear that doctors had no reason to assume that the baby was dead," he said. "There is on the face of it a case of negligence to be answered."
As the grieving parents made their way to the cemetery, the baby reportedly started gurgling and was rushed back to the hospital.
She is reported still to be in a critical condition and is on a ventilator.
Medical experts say the most likely explanation for what happened is that drugs given to the mother suppressed the baby's heart beat - which would have grown stronger once the effects of the drugs wore off.

Sheesh that lady must have had a heck of a lot of drugs in her system for the baby to have appeared to doctors as dead! Thank goodness they realized the mistake before it was too late.

That's horrible. Poor baby, and she is still in critical condition. My prayers are with her and her family.

She might have even been cremated, actually, had they not seen her gasping like that.,

It seems like a lot of weird baby things happen in India, why is that ? like babies with 9 arms and a lot of birth defects and stuff. Is it that people generally have poor pre-natal care there or do they interbreed a lot in some areas. It seems weird and I know that there are a lot of impoverished areas out there but there seem to be so many Indian doctors here in the US. Do they normally have poor medical care in their own country ? Just curious. This story is so sad BTW, that poor little baby, hope she is ok.

^^ I'm from India so it's true in some ways. It's not really so much interbreed as it is just poor medical conditions. Yes there are a lot of Indian doctors but they are all outside of India (like here in the US). Doctors in India are some of the very best but compared to the amount people they have to serve is crazy. Again India is a developing country and there are even some babies who are born at home and not in a hospital because they can't afford the medical attention. It's sad but true, although I have to say that India has been growing by the numbers and the economy is only getting better.

God bless that little girl.

Thank you, I was wondering about that. That is so sad for what some children have to go through. I think the indian doctors are some of the very best too.I live in Boston so we have a lot of medical facilities here and many wonderful doctors that are from India ( My dr is Indian). You are some of the kindest warmest people. I was wondering about interbreding because I know they have a Caste system there and sometimes with Royalty it is not uncommon like in France and England. That poor little baby, so happy they saved her in time, she is a survivor !

for the parents!!

Imagine giving birth and your child dies...only to find out you were given a second chance at parenthood when the baby opens her eyes?

I HIGHLY doubt the parents were mortified

why is it terrible? the baby can LIVE!!!!!!!! Live!!!!!!!!!! thats a miraculous thing. Maybe im being too postive

Yeah, it's a GOOD thing that the baby survived.
She's one tough cookie!! But if it was me, I'd be furious.
