I am having troubles feeding water to my DD. She is constipated and now has a UTI because her intake of fluids is insufficient.
How do I feed her water? She really hates the taste of it...even when I add fruit juice to sweeten it. She pushes away the sippy cup, the bottle and spoon. I try to feed water to her with a syringe and she spits most of the water out. How do I get her to drink more water? |

How many bottles or how often is she breastfeeding? Babies under the age of 1 really don't need anything else. As long as she is eating/drinking enough breastmilk/formula, she should be fine.
Do you fill the tub to give her a bath? My doctor told me not to let my daughter sit in water in the bath. She had a kidney infection around the age of 8 months which started as a UTI. Once I changed the way she bathed, she never had a problem again. Also, remember the wipe her front to back. |

When my daughter was constipated, I would add a half of a cap full of prune juice to her bottle. She couldn't even tell it was in there. Or feed her apricot and apple baby food.

If her fluid intake is insufficient, then her food intake (i.e. formula, breast milk, soft foods mixed with liquid) must also be insufficient. I agree with Jill that babies aren't SUPPOSED to have water; they take in all the fluids they need through their primary food source - formula or breastmilk.
Has a pediatrician suggested the additional water? If so, I'd be tempted to get a second opinion. My babies were never constipated, but for my friend's infants who were, their pedis usually recommended what omgsweet mentioned - a bit of prune juice in a bottle or added to baby food/cereal. |

Yes, I tried prune juice mixed with water and she doesn't want anything to do with it. That was what my pediatrician recommended.
She breastfeeds about 5-7 times a day and she's almost 8 months old. I feed her solids 3 times a day and ever since she started solids, she has been constipated. So I figured it's because she doesn't take in enough water with her meals. omgsweet: I didn't even think about her sitting in her bath. Yes, she does sit in her bathwater for about 10 mins everyday. I will ask my pediatrician about it at her follow-up appointment on Thursday. We went in to see the doctor today and they took a urine sample from DD and found a small trace of bacteria in it...they are sending it to the lab for further analysis. So I'll know for sure what kind of infection she has on Wednesday. |

If you express your milk, will she take it in a bottle? She won't notice a very small amount of prune juice mixed with the milk.

pear juice or pear baby food should help.
you can give water at 6 months old but only small amounts, and it is not a cause of constipation if baby is taking in other fluids (breast milk/formula) so if she doesn't like the water, just forget it and try pureed prunes mixed with rice cereal/oatmeal, or puree pears mixed with cereal or on their own. also, you can get the baby safe feeder and put chunks of pear in there for her to suck on. |

What solids in particular is she having? Some foods are quite binding, and in my ds' case, he had trouble digesting certain foods and would suffer from allergy-related digestion issues.

DS's pediatrician advised to give infants water with moderate amount. We feed DS water, at least twice a day between feeds. He won't take more than an oz each time, so there's no reason to worry about overdose of water. We live in a tropical country so it only makes sense to give him water. Like ms p, we add an extra oz of water in his formula, which he takes twice a day.

we've had several patients who brought their constipated children in for (chiropractic)adjustments. There is a particular adjustment that induces a BM within 30 minutes or so 9 times out of 10.
Speak to your pedi about H2O, because usually they do not recommend giving babies water directly - they should be getting adequate water from their regular dietary intake. If baby is chronically constipated - look into allergy testing. |
