I cut out all sushi and sushi rolls, coffee, mayo, cream cheese, tuna, Alcohol (of course!), all OTC meds (Advil, etc). Coffee got the thumbs up in the 2nd trimester, but even then I only had a small latte once a week.

True! I wasn't even thinking about the caffeine factor, as I drink the Arizona Diet Decaf Green Tea. Ohh....I miss it!!!

I drank decaf'd green tea no problems. Caffeine is not harmful but excessive amounts can cause harm. Just remember most sodas contain caffeine so if abstaining, you should stop consuming sodas also.

My friends' OBs told them to stay away from all spicy foods. My OB said spicy food is safe so long as I have been regularly consuming it before. My OB said to stay away from raw fish and reduce consumption of large fish like tuna and salmon. Once a week 1 portion is fine for tuna and salmon. My friend in Japan didn't get this no-fish advice from her OB so really it depends on location. Fish in Japan is basically staple food for non-vegetarians. Spice is staple food in countries like Mexico, India, and Malaysia.

Just make sure whatever meat you consume is 100% cooked. Steak well done, etc. Vegs and mushrooms eaten raw must be thoroughly washed. No seafood from brackish waters (mussels, oysters..).

I have a question - why would you want to avoid mayo? I have not read anything about this. Thanks!

Basically everything else posted here I have avoided or have been told to avoid. Although I did have a hot dog at a cookout two weeks ago.

Fresh mayo (just like freshly made Caesar salad dressing) is made from raw eggs. Mayo from a jar poses no threat, as it has been pasteurized.

hmmm. I love spicy food, and as long as you don't have heartburn, I didn't think there was a problem with eating it? Am I missing something?

Also watch out for Caesar salad.. some of the dressing is made fresh and can contain raw egg! I have found this at 3 restaurants! Glad I asked first!

For me, it was nothing raw, deli meat, coffee and anything caffeine. I had to give up Sushi during pregnancy. Oh, how I miss it but now I am making up for it.

If you intend on breastfeeding, the forbidden foods continue ...

Something about causing blistering on baby's skin.

I don't think that is possible. I heard because it can cause digestive problems when you are nursing and can cause sever heartburn, etc while pregnant.

There are cultures where spicy food is eaten routinely. It does NOT cause blistering on the baby or any such thing. If you are unaccustomed to it, then it can cause heartburn in YOU and make you uncomfortable. And a breastfed newborn is usually fine with whatever foods the mother has been eating throughout pregnancy, so cruciferous vegetables, dairy and spicy foods won't necessarily be a problem after the baby is born. Many babies have digestive issues for the first three months, and people try everything to make it better. By the time baby gets to about 3 months, the digestive issues usually stop, so people think it was whatever they eliminated last (dairy or spicy foods or whatever) when in fact that often has nothing to do with it because it was developmental.

You should definitely avoid ALL artificial sweeteners. Aspartame, if you read up on it, is a neurotoxin. Bad, bad stuff. And Splenda is no better. I don't consume that stuff ever; I sure wouldn't feed it to my baby. You should also try to avoid MSG; it's a neurotoxin as well. (Google "other names for MSG." If you start reading labels, you'll see that it's in more food products than you could imagine.)

i agree with everything. the notion that spicy foods somehow messes up the baby's skin or gives it less hair or whatever is a myth. i do know that a lot of women avoid spicy foods when pregnant only because it gives them (the mothers) heartburn, diarrhea, and/or vomiting, which of course no one wants to go through if they don't have to, that's why many people caution about it.
