Default Disposable Diaper Review

A Review of Various Brands of Disposable Diapers: Honest Advice from a Stay at Home Mom of Two in Diapers

All diapers and baby wipes are not created equal. As a stay at home mom of two in diapers, I've tried just about every brand available in my town. Some are great, some are adequate, and some just aren't worth the money at all.

Below you will find reviews of diapers and wipes that I've tried on my little ones. All of the information on this lens is based off of my personal experience as a loving mommy. The diaper prices I've listed are based off of a large package at the WalMart price as of July 8, 2008. I've also listed the price per diaper. Sometimes you may think a pricier diaper is worth it until you realize you are spending almost a quarter per diaper. That's $1.00 for just four diapers!

Pampers: They're Expensive, but They're Super Nice

Package of 100 for $19.67 ($0.1967 per diaper)

I love Pampers Baby Dry. They really are the best diaper money can buy. They are super, super soft. They also have the stretchiest waste band I've seen on any diaper. Both of these characteristics mean a comfortable, yet snug fit.

Pampers Baby Dry have an adorable Sesame Street Baby motif in gender neutral yellows and teals. They are super cute. Pampers diapers are lightly scented with a fragrance similar to baby powder, so they aren't a good choice for babies who are sensitive to perfumes.

Pampers Swaddlers & Cruisers: Even Pricier Than Baby Dry and Not Near as Nice

Swaddlers 92 for $19.24 ($0.21 per diaper) / Cruisers 80 for $19.24 ($0.24 per diaper)

Pampers also makes a diaper they call Swaddlers for smaller babies and Cruisers for larger babies. While I love Pampers Baby Dry, their more expensive Swaddlers and Cruisers I do not like at all. They have a netted layer that lies between your baby and the diaper. This is intended to protect the baby's skin from irritation. But, it doesn't work. The netted weave is very large, so the baby's skin still comes in contact with the diaper. In fact, the netting sticks to the baby's skin really bad. My poor little baby had a deep red impression from the netted layer. It seems very uncomfortable to me. Also, the absorbent layer in both Swaddlers and Cruisers seems to break apart in pieces when it gets saturated with urine.

My conclusion on Swaddlers and Cruisers is don't waste your money. If you want to spend big bucks on a good quality diaper buy Pampers Baby Dry.

The Best Diaper Money Can Buy

If you're not on a budget, then Pampers Baby Dry are by far the absolute best disposable diaper out there.
Huggies: Gentle Care, Natural Fit, and Snug and Dry

Package of 84 for $19.24 ($0.2290 per diaper)

I lumped all of the Huggies daytime brands together because they all leak. They are terrible. Every mom I'm friends with told me that Huggies leak when I was pregnant with my first baby, but I received some at my baby shower and decided to give them a try and I ended up with poopy in my lap on more than one occasion. They leak peepee, they leak poopy, they just plain leak all the time. And to top it off, they aren't cheap. They aren't scented, so many moms turn to Huggies when their baby is allergic to Pampers, but as you'll discover on this lens there are much better alternatives to Pampers than Huggies.

Huggies Overnights

Package of 62 for $18.97 ($0.3059 per diaper)

Yep, Huggies Overnights are the most expensive diaper on this lens at a whopping 30 and a half cents each! But, they are an overnight diaper, so you only use one a day and they are worth it. I started using Huggies Overnights when my daughter turned one. Her diapers were getting so full and puffy that they were waking her up at night. I switched to Huggies Overnights after reading great reviews about them on epinions and to my amazement, unlike all other Huggies diapers, they do not leak at all. They don't even get that puffy, so they stay comfortable throughout the night. My daughter started sleeping through the night thanks to this diaper.

Huggies Overnights run a little small. My town doesn't carry the size 3 (the size my daughter wears in every other brand I put her in), so she wears the size 4 and it fits just fine.

*Mommy Tip: I also use the Huggies Overnights for long drives or trips to the zoo. They work great at keeping my daughter comfortable until it's convenient to stop and change her diaper.

Get a Great Night's Sleep

My daughter never slept through the night until we started putting her in Huggies Overnights every single night. They hold an amazing amount of liquid without getting uncomfortably puffy.

Luvs: True to Their Advertisements, No Leaks!

Package of 120 for $19.97 ($0.1664 per diaper)

Luvs are a great bargain diaper. They don't leak and are unscented, which is great for sensitive skin. The first time I used Luvs, two years ago, they did not have stretchy sides. I had to tighten the velcro tabs a few times per diaper to get them to stay up. I have tried Luvs again recently with my newborn and they now have stretchy tabs. However, they are still not as stretchy as Pampers, Huggies, or even many generics. They have Blue's Clues pictures on them that vary in colors of red, yellow, and purple.

Luvs are great to buy if the store is sold out of your usual brand (which I've done a few times). Since they are fragrance free they will not irritate sensitive babies, they are a good value compared to Pampers and Huggies, and they do not leak. But, they aren't as stretchy and comfortable as a few generic diapers that I actually like better than Luvs and they are a whole lot cheaper.

Live and Learn and then Get Luvs

Luvs perform great. They are unscented, so are great for sensitive skin. They don't leak at all, just like the commercials claim.
Target Brand Diaper

I love this diaper. It has stretchy tabs, hugs baby's legs, is soft, and doesn't leak at all. The only time I've ever had a leak with the Target brand diaper is overnight. They are unscented, so are great for sensitive babies. If you frequent Target, or have one located close to you then this should be your diaper of choice. My first baby wore nothing but the Target diaper for 10 months. They work great and even though they fit better than Luvs, the Target diaper is cheaper.

WalMart's White Cloud: A Great Value

Package of 104 for $15.97 ($0.1535 per diaper)

One day my husband called me from work and asked if I needed him to pick anything up on the way home. Our newborn was almost out of diapers. At the time, I only used the Target brand diaper, but my husband was planning to stop off at WalMart, so I asked him to pick up a package of Luvs. Boy, was I mad when he came home with WalMart's generic diaper called White Cloud. He said he bought it because the price was so low. All I could think about was that now I'd have to put my precious newborn in these horrible cheap diapers. But, the White Cloud diaper really surprised me.

White Clouds work great. I haven't had a leak with them yet. White Cloud diapers have stretchy velcro-like tabs, just like name brand diapers do. They are almost identical to the Target diaper only the decorative images on the outside of the diaper seem to differ. Besides that, Target's diaper and WalMart's White Cloud diaper look, feel, and perform exactly the same.

WalMart's Parent's Choice: Good Quality and the Best Value Out There!

Package of 92 for $13.67 ($0.1485 per diaper)

Believe it or not, this diaper is my pick! Wow! Could have knocked me over with a feather when I tried this diaper. It is the cheapest diaper available in my town and it is my favorite. I've never had a leak with the Paren't Choice diaper and to my surprise they are almost as soft as Pampers. Parent's Choice diaper performs a little better than the Target diaper and White Cloud diaper, even though it's cheaper and it is unbelievably soft and comfortable. It's unscented, so it's great for sensitive babies. Another nice feature is that the main part of the diaper is plain white so it doesn't show through your baby's clothes. What is super surprising is how well the core holds fluid. It stays together and soft like Pamper's core and doesn't break apart at all. The only thing Pamper's has on the Parent's Choice diaper is that it fits a little more snuggly and is a tiny bit softer. But, the Parent's Choice doesn't leak and has stretchy comfortable tabs and is super soft, so it probably isn't worth it to spend the nickel a diaper more.

My Experience with Disposable Diapers

An Overview of Every Diaper We've Tried

When I had my daughter, the hospital provided us with Pampers, which I loved. They didn't leak and were super soft and stretchy. Unfortunately, the second week home from the hospital, my daughter developed an allergy to Pampers. It really scared me as a new mom. She had a bright red (think lobster-red) rash every where the diaper touched her. It literally looked like she was wearing a red diaper.

We had a package of Huggies at the house that was given to me at my baby shower. But as I stated earlier, Huggies leak horribly. After ending up with a lap full of poop for the second time, I sent my husband to the store to buy our baby some other diapers. I was so discouraged because I knew Pampers didn't leak, but my daughter couldn't wear them. And, since Huggies is the next name brand after Pampers, I thought nothing else would stop leaks and assumed Pampers was the only good diaper out there. Boy, was I wrong!

The next diaper I tried was Luvs. I remember all of the commercials talking about how they stop leaks as well as those "pricier brands." So, I gave them a try. They didn't leak at all and they weren't scented, so they didn't irritate my baby at all. I used them for a while. The tabs didn't stretch so I kept having to tighten the diaper to keep it up.

I decided to look at epinions and see if anyone had reviewed diapers and they had. I found out that a lot of parents liked the Target diaper. I bought a box and loved them. They had stretchy tabs, fit great, weren't scented and didn't leak. We used nothing but the Target diaper in the day (we started using an overnight diaper when she was about a year old) until after we had our second baby. By then my daughter was 20 months old, so the Target diaper served us well for over a year.

After having my second baby, it became tedious going to WalMart with two babies to buy groceries then loading them back in the car and driving to Target to buy diapers. So, I decided to give the WalMart's White Cloud a try and it was just as good as the Target diaper. In fact, except for the outer design and color, they seem like the exact same diaper. Then one day, when I was checking out at WalMart, the cashier said, "Oh, White Clouds are nice, but have you tried Parent's Choice? They are cheaper and don't leak at all." So, after we used up the White Clouds I bought a package of Parent's Choice and they are great! After all of the diapers I've tried over the past nearly two years, Parent's Choice is second only to Pampers Baby Dry. They don't leak, have super stretchy tabs and waste band and they are very soft. Much softer than White Cloud and the Target diaper.

Here are some more reviews.

White Cloud rated #1 store brand by consumer research.com.

http://www.consumersearch.com/diapers

Wal-Mart White Cloud
Pros
  • Inexpensive
  • Absorbent
  • Performs well for its price
Cons
  • Not as durable as other brands
Our Analysis

We found the best review of Wal-Mart White Cloud diapers at Consumer Reports, which asks families to try out this product (along with mainstream brands) for two weeks. Wal-Mart diapers are also mentioned in the latest version of the book "Baby Bargains," and are also featured in a blog by About.com's guide to baby products.

Reviewers point out that investing in a store brand like Wal-Mart White Cloud diapers can save you more than $300 per year over more expensive name brands. White Cloud diapers are praised for their wide, soft-stretch waist; their secure-grip stretch tabs; their cloth-like cover and their ultra-absorbent core. Tests show that White Cloud diapers resist leaks well. Parents have posted mixed reviews, but many swear by White Cloud's quality. In tests, White Cloud diapers outperform a couple of prominent name brands. If you're not comfortable buying store-brand diapers, reviewers recommend either ultra leak-proof Pampers Cruisers (*est 31 cents per diaper) or Pampers Swaddlers (*est. 27 cents per diaper) for newborns.

Pampers Swaddlers

Best diapers for newborns

Pros
  • Variety of sizes
  • Stretchy sides and extra padding
  • Fold-down section for umbilical area
  • Snug, comfortable fit
Cons
  • More expensive than store-brand diapers

Although Pamper Swaddlers diapers aren't included in the recent diaper review roundup by Consumer Reports (though other varieties of Pampers are), we found useful information about Pampers Swaddlers in the book "Baby Bargains," and in a blog about disposable diapers on About.com (where About.com's baby product guide polls parents about their favorite diapers). User (parent) reviews on Amazon.com are also informative.
A favorite of both parents and experts, Pampers Swaddlers diapers come in three sizes to fit newborns and babies up to 18 pounds. Parents like Pampers Swaddlers' "Grow-With-Me" fit, their stretchy sides and their soft overlapping tabs, which they say provides a snug, comfortable fit. Pampers Swaddlers also have extra padding in the back, since they're meant for inactive babies who spend more time on their backs, rather than toddlers. Swaddlers also feature a fold-down front section to accommodate a newborn's sensitive navel area. Though reviewers praise Pampers Swaddlers, they also give high marks to Wal-Mart White Cloud diapers (*est. 13 cents apiece), which cost half as much.

Huggies Pull-Ups

*Est. 33 cents per diaper

Training pants

Pros
  • Versatility
  • Kid-friendly designs
Cons
  • More expensive than store-brand pull-ups

Huggies Pull-Ups aren't included in the most recent diaper roundup by Consumer Reports, but user reviews on Amazon.com are useful, as is a poll on favorite diaper brands posted in a blog on About.com.
Pull-ups are diapers that are pulled up in a manner similar to underwear, designed to help ease the transition to toilet training. What reviewers like about Huggies Pull-Ups is that they can double as diapers and pull-ups, meaning you don't have to completely undress your child to replace a soiled diaper. Unlike another popular brand of pull-ups, Pampers Easy Ups (*est. 30 cents per diaper), Huggies Pull-Ups can be used either way: as underwear-type pull-ups or as regular diapers with reclosable side tabs.

Seventh Generation

*Est. 27 cents per diaper

Eco-friendly diapers

Pros
  • Chlorine-, fragrance-, and latex-free
  • Hypoallergenic
Cons
  • Limited absorbency
  • Sticky closures
  • Brown color

Our Analysis

Unfortunately, Seventh Generation diapers aren't included in the latest diaper roundup by Consumer Reports. Seventh Generation eco-friendly diapers are reviewed in the book "Baby Bargains," and are also mentioned in a poll on favorite diaper brands posted in a blog at About.com. Seventh Generation diapers are also the subject of a substantial amount of parent reviews on Amazon.com.
Many parents posting to user-review sites are fans of Seventh Generation diapers, which are chlorine-free (chlorine bleaching, a technique used in most mainstream diapers, produces the pollutant dioxin). Seventh Generation diapers also have no fragrance or latex, and are hypoallergenic. Enthusiasts of this brand say these are the best diapers ever. Other users, however, say these Seventh Generation diapers don't have enough absorbency in the larger sizes, that the tape closures are too sticky. In addition, some reviewers dislike the diapers' brown color. If you're not concerned about latex/fragrance sensitivities, Pampers Swaddlers for newborns and babies (*est. 27 cents per diaper) are comparably priced, and Pampers Cruisers for older infants (*est. 31 cents per diaper) are only slightly more expensive.

I am finally through all of the Newborn and Size 1 Pampers that I received from my baby showers and from the hospital. Kayla is almost ready for size 2 (12 lbs) so I am trying out Luvs, Parent's Choice and White Cloud. I still have a Size 2 box left of Pampers that I will use for outings/overnight but I will try these 3 brands during the day to see how they perform.

Thanks for the reviews!

There's also the G-Diaper which is the most expensive disposable diaper though only the liner gets tossed the rest washed. http://www.gdiapers.com/ Word has it G-diapers are super absorbant and cause the least allergies/rashes. I guess it appeals to mothers who love designer products too much I find it icky to dispose of though, eeew!

Your DD is so cute, I was going to try the Kirkland, how do they compare to the Swaddlers, do they have the "netting' feature, I love that.
