Default Did you pick a "Modern" name, and if so, why?
I think it's more of an American thing, but it seems like there are a lot of new names circulating nowadays.

I come from a country (Ireland) where either you have an Irish name or a regular "English" name - you don't really hear much that's really unusual.

So I'm fascinated by all the new names that seem to pop up on an almost yearly basis over in the States. Where did they come from?

So for the mom's with new-ish names - tell us your naming story!

Did you read it in a book? See it on a TV character? Mix up two family members names to get one whole new one?

My kids have names that are popular in parts of Europe, but not really heard much in the US - so people often think they are 'modern' names. (we also used scandinavian spelling since our last name is norwegian - and that confuses people too. American's are not used to pronouncing J's as Y's)

We got DS's name from a movie of the same name that won the foreign film oscar the year he was born - Kolya

DD looked exactly like DS, and I figured that irish twins was the closest to true twins that I was going to get, so we gave her the similar name - Katja

Hmmm. I don't know what names are considered a "new-ish" name. I picked Maya for DD. I thought it was simple and pretty. I guess it isn't new, since the poet Maya Angelou has to be over 70yrs old! DS is Darwin Jr., definitely not a "new-ish" name; I think it might be old English. I think a lot of people are doing made up names, but DH and I are not into that.

Unfortunately, a lot of people just make stuff up. I think a lot of "new" names are terrible and an embarrassment to the children, honestly.

I favor older and more classic names myself. I named all three of my children pretty traditional names. I actually wanted to name my dd Margaret Evelyn, but dh didn't like that.

Hmmm, well my oldest daughter's name is Margarita....after my mom. Don't think that's really a new name? Everyone that hears it says "oh like the drink??", and I always have to say "no, like the flower". Margarita means daisy in Greek. My youngest is named Ariadne....another old name, an ancient Greek name she was a princess in Crete. I'm sure those that know their Greek Mythology know the story behind the name. Hmm what would be considered new names I wonder?

Oooh everything posh, I love Ariadne!!...that is our choice if we have ever have another baby and it is a girl. I am also Greek and we also went with traditional Greek names. My son is named after my FIL. His name is Adoni. In English, this translates to Anthony but we are not using the English version as we prefer the name in Greek. My daughter is named for my maternal grandmother and her name is Marina.

"Modern" aka recently made-up names are definitely popular in the U.S. At the same time, I've noticed a revival of classic names in recent years, i.e. Henry, William, Sophia, Jane, etc. DH and I are definitely into classic names so we named our kids old-school English names.

My kids have old Hebrew names. They aren't very common, but they are great old names with deep meanings. You have to be careful how you name your kids. They may take on the characteristics of the people or meanings for whom/which they're being named.

I've decided I'm naming my kids after modern appliances.

I'm not sure if this would be "modern" but DS is being named based on DH's favorite baseball team (yes, I think he caught me in a moment of weakness when he suggested it) and his middle name is a Hawaiian name we combined out of two guys my FIL knows who are "good people" (we didn't want to give DS one of the family names, but we did combine family member names to create a new one...after making sure that said members were not miscreants...LOL).

I have no clue what is considered a "Modern Name". DH and I chose names that we loved. I picked out there first names and he picked out there middle names.

DD#1-Maya Alexandria
DD#2-Kristina Gabrielle
DS-Jacob Elijah
