i've pretty much completed my baby registry but debating whether i should include a diaper pail. i mean, why not just tie up the diaper in a plastic bag and have DH throw it outside in the trashcan?
seriously though, i've read reviews of various diaper pails...genie II, dekor plus, diaper champ, safety 1st. anyone have success with any of these? TIA! |

Yes, I love the Diaper Champ. I do think its worth the money! I got this as a gift from my registry. But when DS got a little older probably about 8 months, we started to take his poo diapers out to throw away because they got VERY stinky. I wouldn't want to let those sit for a while. But before when he was a newborn, we tossed everything into the Champ, and it worked well. Kept the smell out until you opened it to take the bag out - that is when I held my breath! So basically now, we only use the Diaper Champ as a pee diaper holder.
For the diaper genie, you must purchase their refill bags for it, in order to work properly, but for the Diaper Champ you can use any old plastic bag - including the ones from the grocery market. That's what I like the most about it - reusing stuff! I hope this helps with your decision. It would be a good investment for the first few months of your little one's life!!!

I would have to say yes and no. When DD was small and pooped a lot I used the diaper genie a lot. Now that DD is older(11 months), she only poops once a day. Now I don't use the genie anymore. I just immediately take the dirty diaper and throw it away outside.

I asked about which one to get back when I was registering, and ended up not getting one based on the feedback I got. A lot of people said it was great for a while, but then it sort of absorbed the smell and they got rid of it, and people didn't like having to get special bags for it. My DS started pooping only once a day or every 2-3 days early, like 6-8 weeks, so we just take those diapers outside and then use a little stainless garbage can with a pedal operated lid in the nursery (the kind where you step on the pedal and it opens up.)

I recommend the diaper champ. I bought one for my first DD and I am still using it 3 years later with my second baby. It keeps odors at bay, only when you change it does it smell bad. It uses regular trash bags so that's why I picked it initially. We are not allowed to use large garbage cans here where I live so we just have to take the trash out 2 times a week in bags.. so this works better for me than putting them in the regular garbage outside (since we don't get to do that)

I never used a diaper pail, just put all the diapers in the trash and took them outside. I figured it was just gonna sit there and get smelly.

I recommend dumping/shaking the solid waste in the toilet before throwing away the diaper. That works better than any diaper pail at keep smells away.

not for me.. i just kept the plastic bags from the grocery store and wrapped each diaper in those tightly. Then I would put them outside. My DD was breastfed until 15 months and breastfed babies poop doesn't really have that horrible odor. I recommend saving that money for that awesome swing you're going to need. LOL

I would have to say no. I had a diaper genie with my first, but like others said it was only good for a short time. Now i just tie them up in a plastic bag and throw them outside

with my 2nd baby... i didnt bother to register or buy for a diaper genie... like the other posters have mentioned.. it's just a waste of $. we just make use of the plastic bags we get from the groceries and we usually throw the trash with dirty diapers 2-3 times a day.

I don't think so. We throw ours in the trash that gets emptied often enough anyway. The big stinky diapers always get thrown direct into the big trashcan outside. I think those diaper genies are pretty much a waste since they use a lot of plastic in order to wrap up the diapers

I had a Diaper Champ and never used it. When DS was a newborn, we would hang a grocery bag on his changing table and use that for diapers, then threw away the bag a couple of times a day. Once he started table food, the diapers got REALLY STINKY. So now, we save the plastic produce bags from the market, toss it in there, twist it up, and throw it in the kitchen trash (which gets emptied daily) or just outside in the garbage can.
I wouldn't recommend it, personally. |

no, not IMO.
I have 3 kids and tried it w/ my 1st child. It was too much work and began to stink after a couple of months. I just started putting poo dipes in a grocery store plastic bag and tying it in a knot. I bought a trash can and put it just outside the garage door and would just throw the baggies into it instead. Worked best for us through 3 kids.

We have a Genie II and love it. When you are changing your baby, he/she maybe crying and wiggly, and you will have your hands full. Having the diaper pail right there and then really helps. All you need to do is take the bag out every few days. I tossed this odor eliminator thingie (sorry forgot the name) from Bed Bath and Beyond to absorb any residual smell so I don't have to hold my breath when I take out the bag (otherwise you really don't smell anything from the outside). I'd recommend one,it's worth the money.
