Yesterday afternoon, I left work to go pick up bubs at daycare. As I'm gathering up baby and snuggling him after a long hard day, the daycare director approached me.

She said "Sarah, I've done something kind of naughty." - as a side note, we got our first bill for August and it had an error on it. My husband had called them on it and it was adjusted. My assumption was that she was going to tell me about the billing error. I was WRONG.

She then proceeded to tell me there was a mix-up with the bottles. Vincent (my little man) is EBF, and I pump and provide three individual bottles for his daily need. Each bottle is marked with a V on the bottom, and bagged together in a bag labeled Vincent.

Apparently the director was helping out in the baby room, and two babies needed bottles at once. While they were warming the bottles, she was holding a different baby and started giving that baby MY milk from Vincent's bottle. I guess not even an ounce into the feeding, they realized the error, and threw out the remaining 4+ ounces.

They called the other mother immediately to let her know about the error. She was FINE with her baby getting my milk by mistake. (I don't know if I would have been but I'm glad I wasn't faced with that phone call)

Here's my thoughts:

1. Why didn't I receive a phone call immediately? This was the 1:15PM feeding, and so he received his third bottle at the second bottle time, leaving him with NO milk from 1:15 to 5:20. She said that he was not acting hungry at that time and should he have started to get hungry they would have called me. I let her know that it was unacceptable to me for them NOT to have milk on hand, so yes, I should have been called. Also, with my job I travel making sales calls around my area. I could have been well over an hour's drive away from him.

2. Should they have disposed of the remaining 4+ ounces? I guess I'm really wondering here if they could have just changed the nipples and it been OK to keep the milk. What would you say?

Really, I feel like I'm mourning the loss of the 5 ounces of breastmilk. I'm so thankful that Vincent wasn't starving to the point of being stressed by the time I got there. It's such a strange relationship women can get with breastmilk, but I pump each and every ounce with LOVE for my baby boy. Not to mention that it takes me usually two pumpings to get about a bottle and a half's worth of milk.

I'm so sorry to go on and on about this, but I'm hoping to get some outsider input on this. I needed the vent time I suppose. I did give the director a call and (respectfully) gave her a piece of my mind. They are now enforcing the policy that the baby's name should be on each SIDE of the bottle, so that this doesn't happen again. Now I'm paranoid about Vincent having had someone else's BM, there's no way to prove he hasn't!
That's 2 strikes Sarah! Billing, breast milk, no more negligence! That's your precious baby you are paying them to care for in your absence. I understand that little mistakes happen here and there, but please. Don't be afraid to assert yourself. A friend of mine pulled her child out of his daycare because of lack of proper communication regarding an incident. It's all in the way incidents are handled! Hug Baby V for me.
