My concern is a baby who can climb out, can climb most anything else.
This includes pulling on furniture to stand and possibly getting crushed under - look this up if you think it's uncommon because it's NOT uncommon.
Or pulling on curtains, plugs, toilets, etc. . . . Don't underestimate what a baby can get into or underestimate how soundly us sleep deprived parents can be {sleeping through some sounds}.
Oh I was just kidding ! We live in close quarters over here so there is no way I would miss the baby being up, she is up my a$$ 24/7 lol ! I know some kids are quiet and sneaky like my first who is a boy would probably get up quietly if he is that age and do some damage. I am curious to see what to do too because I need to transition the baby into a toddler bed, she has been co-sleeping with us so I need lots of help too !

Most Physicians will tell you that the crib is the safest place for your child to sleep. Now, As Jill said every child is different. My daughter is very spirited; quite the firecracker. There is no way at 9 months she could be trusted in a toddler bed & I personally wouldnt be able to sleep with that arrangement. I would have to do the things I listed in my other post. We know are children best. If you feel like your child will crawl/walk to your room, or will stay out of trouble with freerange of the house you are lucky & may be able to transition to a toddler bed without problems.

We would find him sleeping on the floor in front of our door every morning - or in the middle of the night (didn't even have a master bath in those days, so we had to be careful not to step on him)! We handled it by allowing it - and making sure everything was safe. We left the crib side down, put pillows all around the crib on the floor, made sure there was a gate at the steps that he could NOT get over, baby-proofed the rest of the furniture (and kitchen - it was on the same level). Never had a terrible incident - or even a minor one. He just would NOT stay in that crib! And yes...he turned out to be my "problem" child. Then he grew up...and now he's his wife's problem!
Your post cracks me up.

Well, I just found another tip: putting socks on your little one before bed. With socks on they cant get a good grip I guess. My daughter would take them off but not every kid is like mine, lol.

I hate to say it, but I'd buy an inexpensive crib and use the tent.
99% of babies could never be moved to a toddler bed this young.
That is what I was trying to suggest, but I think I was unclear in my wording, lol!

I think all of this is based on the childs abilities too. My daughter was walking at 10 months, my neice at 9 months so if the 9 month old is climbing out of the crib at 9 months maybe the solution isn't a blanket solution but should be discussed with her pediatrician as to how to handle this situation for the safety of the child. Please keep us posted !

Wow, thanks guys for allll your GREAT responses!!! Seems like this isn't quite the unique problem. I never thought it was b/c geesh, babies are naturally curious, you know?! Anyway, today was DS's 9mo follow up well visit. Ped suggested a toddler bed if he gets out of hand but I just can't trust him w/ one quite yet. He'd go B O N K E R S !! It would be the equivalent of leaving a 21yo guy in Vegas with lots of booze and lots of $...LMAO!! Absolute debauchery!

Needless to say, I might just have to suck it up and get another crib .

To those of you who used lots of soft objects around the bed, how well did that work? I mean I'm sure your kids are ok now but did y'all ever wake up to horrendous screaming/crying?

bisbee - I must admit I literally lol'd when I read your post....what a crack up!
DlkinVegas - Socks are a great idea....DS takes them off too unfortunately. He HATES them.

I can't speak for these gals, but my friend's DD broke her arm and had it in a cast after falling out of her crib.
This was her 3rd fall, after her 1st fall my friend had surrounded the crib w/ pillows. Her arm still broke.

She's the one who told me about a crib tent for the 1st time.

I'd get another crib that can be serially lowered. Mine was the Storkcraft Stages Deborah (?) from Walmart for around $350. Every time he could get his legs over the top, we kept lowering the bed.
At around 18 months, he was able to get out, so we switched him to a toddler bed with no problems.
Skip one handbag and get the crib... you'll gain a peace of mind.

I totally agree that getting a safer crib may be the best option. Cribs are the safest place for infants and children until age 3-4 (in hospitals, we are required to keep children younger than 4 in cribs). A child in a toddler bed in a separate room may be truly asking for trouble. I can't imagine an infant who is able to climb out of his own crib but not over the side rails of a toddler bed? I think you would have to bolt all your furniture to the walls and make sure his room is completely baby-proofed as well.

As a pediatrician, I wouldn't recommend using a toddler bed at this age particularly because of the other safety issues involved. It's good that you did bring this up with your pediatrician as well, but maybe trying a different crib will work for you.

I know when my oldest son started climbing out of his crib, there was little we could do to keep him in it (he would grab the rails with his feet too). So we let him sleep in his play pen. He couldn't climb out of that.
