Unhappy 6 month old waking up screaming...Help please!!
Ok, Lily has pretty much always slept through the night without a hitch....until this past week. She'll wake up, not just crying, but screaming! I'll run in there, pick her up (so she doesn't wake up her brother who has school in the morning) and as soon as I do, she stops crying and is happy as a clam. The second I put her down, she starts wailing again. She isn't sick, she isn't pulling at her ears, could it be teething?? I'm at my wits end of waking up at least once a night to a screaming baby with nothing apparently wrong....Any ideas????

Teeeething. That's my guess for sure. I think the hyland's teething tablets work - try them! Does she have any teeth yet?
Other than that it could be separation anxiety--although I think they tend to go thru that a bit later. Ireland is 8 1/2 mos and starting to go thru the separation anxiety right now.

I found with both of my kids that their sleep patterns would change at any given time without reason. I think some times when they go through some developmental milestones, their sleep patterns can be interrupted. Teething is a good guess too, but if it is I would go right for the Tylenol/Motrin (instead of Hyland's) because that can cause some serious pain. Best of luck and I hope you get back to sleeping through the night again soon!

Kori-- OMGosh! Ireland is getting sooo big (as per your avatar). She really is such a beauty! Thanks for the suggestion....would you believe Lily is already showing signs of separation anxiety?? I can't put her down and leave the room without a hissy fit of some kind. :( And no, she doesn't have any teeth yet so I'm definitely on the lookout for some pearly whites soon....

Vhdos-- Thank you, that's what I was thinking as well with the whole sleep pattern thing...I looked that up in my book and they said the same thing, that it could change without notice so to speak. I am going to give her some tylenol now since she has been crying pretty much non-stop since I put her up in her crib for a nap (a nap that doesn't look very likely at this point!!). Poor thing...ironically she's better the second I pick her up! Could it just be the separation anxiety??

From what I remember, I think it may be separation anxiety. Both my kids went through this MUCH MUCH earlier than 8 months. They would cry and scream as soon as I would let go of them, or someone else held them! Teething can definitely be another reason her sleep is being disturbed. The symptoms for teething can occur well before you see any pearly whites. Tylenol should do the trick if it is teething. Hope both of you are back to sleeping through the night really soon!!!

Yes, it most certainly could just be separation anxiety. As babies get older, they become more independent, which in turn creates anxiety in regards to needing/wanting mom and needing/wanting independence at the same time. My daughter went through a period at about that age where I had to hold her constantly and/or entertain her constantly. It was draining but came and went. My son is 4 and still prefers to spend most of his waking moments with me!

I say teething. Now, my daughter does this when her nose is stuffy too.

Thanks! Your Lily is gorgeous too!! It sounds like she is just a little anxious when you leave the room. When Ireland does that I just keep going back into her room a few times until she is calm, or I let her dad put her down. She seems to have no issues when he is the one that puts her down...but if I put her down OMG its like I'm leaving her forever and she freaks! If you think she's teething (lots of drool, chewing on her hand/paci/anything, general fussiness) I would give a couple of teething tablets and a dose of motrin. That seems to work pretty well for Ireland, and she can get a few hours rest usually 4-6 uninterrupted before she's up again crying because the teeth are bothering her.

Tough isn't it?! Drives me a little crazy, but I know in a year she'll want me to leave her alone and go thru the "I can do it myself" phase.
