Default 24 week preemies surviving: miracles do happen

I was on You Tube watching ultrasound videos that mama to be's have uploaded and came across several preemie videos of babies at 24 weeks gestation. I was under the false impression that you had to be much farther along for your baby to survive. I was AMAZED at how developed they were (visually) and how much they looked like babies. I guess in my mind when I think of a baby 24 weeks I thought they "wouldn't look" fully developed. These were very inspiring and I thought I would share. It's amazing what modern medicine can do.

Those are amazing! I guess I didn't realize how baby-like they look this early! I pray that I carry until full term, but those are very encouraging!

How amazing! My coworker just gave birth to twins at 25 weeks. One of them passed away, but the other one is hanging in there. Very encouraging video!

It is amazing, and babies can live that young, however, if you read most of the replies, you will see that quite a few of those babies did not make it
I could not imagine losing my baby. I thought about how big I was at 24 weeks (practically just started to show!!!) and I just teared up.

Are you talking about the 4 babies from the links I posted, from what I thought they all survived. I didn't see those replies.

^yes, it does happen. Many people dont realize that they "look" like babies VERY early on- not the "blob" of tissue many women were lead to believe for so long. I work part time at a children and women's hospital and I regularly see babies under 10oz born and get healthy enough to leave! Medical treatment for these young lives is amazing right now and getting better every day.

Babies begin to look like babies at about..12 weeks or so. I mean, you can tell they're babies earlier before that, but they start to get fingernails, and their fingers come apart!
That's why I don't understand why some women would want their baby to be born early, just for their sake. A baby born under 37 wks is considered premature.
One of my bff's had a premature baby boy due to preclampsia. He was born at 4lbs.
He is now 5 months old and thriving

Those bring back so many memories! They are so beautiful, although some look older than 24 weeks when they shot the video. They might have labeled it "My 24 week preemie", meaning that their preemie was born at 24 weeks, but they were older when they videotaped. My son was called a "29 week old preemie" up until he left at 38 weeks, because it's important for the staff to know how far along they were when they were born.

Most hospitals won't allow you to clothe micro preemies until 26-30 weeks because of sensory issues. If you think they were small on those 2 videos in the middle, just imagine a baby 8oz lighter and thinner, and that's what a 24 weeker really looks like.

Oh man.. it took me forever to type this post. I was crying my eyes out the whole time. I really hope my new baby doesn't have to go through that ever.

Yes, miracles do happen. My second one was born at 29 weeks and while we were in the NICU, i befriended another mom who gave birth at 25 weeks.

Her baby was amazingly strong! She was less than a pound, had to have a heart surgery, blood transfusion, you name it, she had to have it done. And yet she came home on what was supposed to be her actual due date healthy. Thank goodness we've come a long way with technology and medicine nowadays!

I believe the earliest baby in the world to survive and go home was born last year at 21 weeks and 5 days - I remember noticing the story as I was pregnant at the time.

My BF has an older daughter who was born at between 26 and 27 weeks 19 years ago and is now a beautiful healthy young lady so it just goes to show that miracles do happen sometimes.

we have one of these micro-preemies in our family.
Hospitals actually refuse Moms in preterm labor at or before 23 weeks + 6 days if you can believe that.
They haven't kept up w/ new improvement s in medicine at all w/ this issue.
My step sister was turned away until the 1st day of her 24th week and they finally admitted her.
Her baby is 2 yrs old now and about 75% in height/weight, no eye sight problems and is learning at or above her peers.

Every week a Mom gets past 24 weeks though makes a HUGE difference in survival, so much so that by the time you get to 27-28 weeks it climbs to a 90% survical rate.
