Ladies,

What do we think about the vintage scotch grain bags? I personally find myself harking back to the olden days of Mulberry. The leather was soooo much nicer!! My Darwin Emmy is still my have bag to carry around, because I never have to worry about damaging it. It's so hardy!

My new weakness is definitely scotch grain. It's such a gorgeous leather and the old Mulberries are total classics in my opinion. Am I alone in thinking so? Anyone else agree?

Hi Twinks - yes - totally agree - the scotchgrain is really classic and early Mulberry - when it had more of an Aristo/Country Weekend/Huntin, Shootin, Fishin vibe - and the bags were hardy and practical to match that image - if you can find a decent one in good condition - it's a great addition to your collection - ooh and you're an Emmy fan too - I absolutely adore - they are Mulberry quality, stitching and detail at it's pinnacle, imo!!

Rox I completely AGREE!!! Emmy's are a masterpiece. I love my Emmy even more than my Roxy (completely unexpected!) and I do love my Roxy! So beautiful... :) xxx

Hehe! - I hate to admit it, but as much as I'm bonkers about my Roxys - there is just something about Emmy isn't there - what colourway is yours?....apparently (and you prob know this anyway) they stopped making as they were just too labour intensive and cost ineffective....and one can see why

Another for the emmy, love it as much as the Roxy and can't imagine parting with it as it's my only Darwin bag.

I'm another admirer of Emmy/roxy craftsmanship!! I'd like to find out more about the scotchgrain though, as its obviously hardwearing.

There is a "Mulberry Leathers" guide in the reference library:-

The Different Mulberry Leathers: A Guide

Also, trusted seller Naughtipidgin has started a "Guide to Mulberry Leathers" on her website:-

I saw a beautiful oak Roxanne in Waitrose yesterday and was stopped in my tracks. I've never seen one irl before and I think instead of a foxglove bays that I 'just had to have' the other day, I am going to have to try and track down a not too used one of these. I can see why die-hard Mulberry lovers favour this type of leather. It is indisputably Mulberry at it's best. Just sorry that I only cottoned on to this brand late last year.

Hi all, I just saw this thread and had to chip in so to speak. Mulberry scotch grain is definitely IMO the most hard wearing and beautiful. I have a couple of vintage mulberry bags in scotch grain and the quality is amazing. They still look as good today as they did when I first purchased them, ahem, many years ago ;-). Maybe I need some more to keep the spirit alive!

Keep a beady eye on fleabay - some very good oaks do pop up on a regular basis........but go for the older Darwin (rectangular plaque - sometimes with fob - older ones without and just maker's mark) - imo better quality than recent nvt (oval plaque and brass fob).....

Thank you so much for that Rox! I will run it by you (and the authenticate forum) if I find a likely prospect. I think the one I saw in Waitrose would definitely have been a darwin. It just looked spectacular.

Going back to the scotchgrain....

It's not leather.....

"Scotchgrain

Established as a classic Mulberry style, Scotchgrain combines superb durability with water resistance. This material has been developed to endure the harsh realities of international travel, and is used in a variety of Mulberry luggage, handproducts and accessories.

Features:
Distinctive pebble grain finish.
Water resistant.
Scotchgrain is a poly-vinyl coated woven cotton and is naturally resistant to everyday wear.

Care:
If surface becomes dirty, can be wiped over with a clean damp cloth."
