Its not just men's accents that go down well. I was in a print shop in Lincoln Nebraska and the shop assistant did all my printing and bound the copies for me for free because he thought my accent was "purrrrty"

My DH has a rather 'posh' accent apparently and when we were in Louisiana we were in a restaurant & some of the kitchen staff came out to hear him talk. I kid you not!

My Japanese friends adore how Mr & Mrs Beckham speak 'Queen's English' elegantly - they mean they can hear the difference from American movie!

I usually try to say nothing.... (I remember when Bay City Rollers were huge in Japan we all thought they spoke beautiful 'Queen's English' then! LOL)

^^ I've just given up on my accent now, I seem to use bits of doric, orcadian & glaswiegan, not to mention that my mums side of the family is from bristol so I can speak with a cracking english accent if the situation arises. Its funny when people who are speaking to me try to work out where I'm actually from though!

LOL ratrat that's hilarious, eloquent they are not - hehe!!

Hi Orkney, I kind of know what you are saying, no one can work out where I am from, me neither sometimes. have you sometimes found yourself trying to stick to one? I have but it only works for a short while though!

Flossie, did your children who were schooled at american international schools end up with American or Canadian accents? My husband has an American accent due to his time there, never lost it, one of his attractive features too, I love his accent :)

Ooooh a Brissol accent - just love it. It took me a long time to get used to the Bristol accent & they way they like to call inanimate objects he or she. We looked around a house once & the owner proudly announced 'She be a lovely shed, she be'

I always think that I don't have an accent but apparently I do!

I suppose I would if I went 'up north' because I'm born and bread Southern.

Maple , it depends , both older boys speak with a mixture , but as soon as they hit the US shores , and especially when they are with their friends the American accent is more predominant . Same with my daughter , but the youngest speaks with an English public school accent .
We are true hybrids as they use a lot of Spanish words too ( from our time spent living in Mexico), originating in Wales so sometimes Welsh can be detected as well , and of course now in Scotland , also German family connections .

I always detect your Bristol accent , I never hear any "Scottish" when you speak.

^^^its those letter R's they always betray me!

Maple have never purposely tried to alter my accent but it really depends who I'm speaking to, will speak using loads of scottish if I'm speaking to someone who is also using that speech, same with the english.

I dont think I have an accent either, but people have said I do too!

I have always lived in the east midlands (nottingham/sheffield/leicester/derby/lincoln) and can tell the difference in accents between some of those places... lord knows what I sound like then

Anyone watching comic relief? Some of the films have had me in tears. Made me think obsessing about a new bag was so very shallow. Donated instead.
