Default Bayswater 09 versus bayswater 2010
I have just been to the store and compared bayswaters - new stock SS 2010 arrived, and one bag was still SS 2009. Have to say - the difference is huge! The new ones are made of VERY grainy leather, very slouchy, the "screw" details on the front plate look towards each other (like on some fakes), the other side of the metal plate is not roundly faceted, like on usual authentic bayswaters, but is flat near the opening hole, like on fakes. The inside suede surface of the leather is black, not grey, on black bays. Feet pads are bigger than on fakes. Overall impression pretty bad, I am afraid to say, for chocolate and black bays. Oak new model had nice leather and good quality overall, just new features. The old model for black looked SO much better, that I ended up splashing on a full price bayswater! (only £50 discount promotion), and ran away with the "old" one, before someone else bought it. My guess is the Mulberry have bought some factory where the best fakes used to be produced...IMHO
But I just wanted to let bays-lovers know, that if you want a beautiful bag, make sure you go and have a look which model you like more, and whether it is wise to wait or to buy now.

I just bought an oak bays (I know I know...I still remember that I had promised pics!), and was using it this week. A very good friend of mine, a mulberry lover herself, said that she didn't think that it looked as expensive as a colleague of ours who has had hers 2 years. She wasn't being nasty, she still adores my bag, but was just telling me her honest opinion. I am madly in love with my bays, but it did make me wonder if the quality has gone down. Im very new to this addiction

That is slightly concerning, I wonder why this has happened?
You would think that if anything design and quality of the icons would improve overtime.

I have noticed with some other high/middle end companies (not sure If I can mention names) that their products have seriously become cheaper looking and of poorer quality over the last couple of years.....Lets hope its just a glitch....

I have to agree. I've looked at the NVT bays and they are thinner than the Darwin. Moreover I ordered an E/W rouge noir and in my opinion the leather was so thin , it just didn't look £500 so I sent it back. Yet the spazzalato really does look quality and the leather value for money. It's sad because Mulberry is all about the leather and its quality.

You are right! ~I saw swatches at Harrods- some of the leathers are SO thin now!

Good question! (bearing in mind I just bought black bays today!) Yes, if the new ones are like that - I will not buy any in those new styles. My husband, having seen new ones, is already asking me to forget my Mulberry obsession and look at other brands. With bayswaters I think people developed an allergy to fakes and their features, so when you are offered to pay £600 for an authentic, but fake looking item, you would feel uneasy. The one I bought today has thick leather and looks closer to Darwin, however, Darwin would have been still better.

Interesting...I wonder if Mulberry is cutting back because of the dreadful economy? A lot of money for something that looks fake!

Thanks for this thread Korinza.
"the "screw" details on the front plate look towards each other (like on some fakes)" is an interesting observation, as I'd noticed fakes tend to have them like this, but, when I was in John Lewis in Bristol last weekend, there was a black Bays with the postman's lock like this - wonder if this was also 2010 stock?
Is it going to get more difficult to authenticate/spot fakes for sale?

On no! That doesn't sound nice at all! I'd hate carrying an authentic, expensive bag if it looked like a fake to everyone else .

Why would they make these changes anyway? Doesn't sound fair to have people paying the same amount of money for less quality...?! I'd understand changes if they drop the price as well, to make them more affordable. But to increase prices and drop quality, nonononononono!

My black darwin Ledbury from Fenwick - bought in Feb 2007 - has screws like that, as does my nvt Joel, also from Fenwick, purchased in March this year. I was told by an sa that Mulberry often change the way the screws face - I wish they'd leave it so they face each other, I'm quite ocd about things matching up and looking neat!
The general deterioration in quality of Mulberry has been well documented here, particularly in the light of the price rises. It's such a shame. Mulberry is clearly very focused on raising its profit margins - understandable, it's a business like any other. I just wish they didn't have to compromise their quality quite so much in order to do so... I still adore Mulberry, of course, but I don't think I'm alone in wishing for a return to made in England, Darwin leather!

Ditto!!! You are most definately not alone in that wish! Most of my bags are darwin and i just love that leather!!! The prices are gradually getting above my comfort zone and none of the new styles/ leathers are rocking my boat.
