Shy Violet, thanks for the info! I guess once we get married we'll have to take care of that ASAP.

I just know that right now, the tax deduction is pretty sweet. It's hard to give it up when I can focus more on paying down my car.

18, with a pitiful minimum wage job and incredibly inconsistent hours. ugh!
checking:$18
savings:$3000

As long as I have $50 in my checking, I put the rest into my savings.
unfortunately, all my hard work will be poured into moving/some rent soon, then I have to start all over

I'm 21 and have about $5000 in my superannuation account and $3000 in my savings...it would be a lot more (I'd be up to about $11,000 in savings) if I didn't go overseas earlier this year...actually that's quite a depressing thought. I owe $8000 on my car and by the time I graduate next year I'll have about a $30k uni debt.

I'm not worried though, I'll have my car debt paid off by mid next year (unless something terrible happens like losing my job) and the uni debt is to my dad so I'll only be paying a tiny amount of interest on it.

I'm 23...

Haha..I have nothing saved but eh..living at home and the job pays for the cell phone...plus..no debt...I don't even have a credit card..just a debit card so I can only spend what I have in the account...I think I'd be really out of control if I had a credit card...oh..and the parents still pay for the car's maintenance..thank goodness for my parents' generosity

Grandfather was kind enough to give me a Trust Fund of $XXX,XXX but I didn't do the saving so I guess it doesn't count..but cant access it until I'm 25 so maybe it still counts as savings? ^_^

19 / College Sophomore

Checking: $6
Savings: $2301
Owe Private College: $17,500 (when I graduate) <-- Luckily I got a scholarship that renews every year!

I'm teaching cello as a side job, two hours a week and I only started working a little before summer ended. Previous to that, my parents didn't give me any sort of allowance.

Regular Savings:
My parents had me open a bank account when I was 12. I'd get 100-150 in allowance and they'd make me put it in the bank and would match it. At 15 I started working. They didn't let me spend anything they would make me put it in the bank and would match that.

Emergency Savings:
My grandma left my mom her 2 homes and my mom rents them out. She gives me most of the money from that. She was recently re-diagnosed with breast cancer so she's been kind of obsessed with making sure i'd have something in the bank if she were to pass.

My cd money was from my grandma. I haven't needed it though. I receive merit scholarships and only pay about 12k a semester and my father insists on covering that so i'd have that money for grad school if I decide to go.

The IRA money is from my mother.

And on having no debt. At 18 I got myself a secured visa and used it for about a year and built up great credit then I bought myself a car. I ended up getting a great rate and I had a good down payment I put down 60% which was 8k and paid off the rest quickly. I don't really charge much to my cards. Every other month or so I charge a few books or dvds so I can get rewards points but thats about it.
I don't think you should count the money from your mother and grandma. I think it is more about what you make and what you make(save) out of it.

Kudos to your Regular Savings and what a great idea your parents had.

I'm 32; married and has full time job.
We have no tuition debt because our parents paid for them, therefore we never borrow student loan.
The only debt we have now is the mortgage for our house.

About $20K savings (my own account), DH's account has another $20K (well..last time I checked was a year ago, he maybe has more now? because we don't have joint account).
I only have $1140 in my IRA because I don't believe in one.

i'm 19.
i have saved, on my own, around 40gs now.
i also have a forced savings account with my parents, and they match what i put into it (around 1000 per month)
i also have a trust fund that kicks in later on in life.

i have a really great job.. thank goodness. and i don't have many expenses as i'm quite spoiled.

I have bypassed this thread previously as I didn't want to scare myself!

Pension is fine, mortgage is fine, but I really have nil savings at present.

A lot of the house is paid off but everything else has gone pear shaped (but no debt other than mortgage).

Checking acount: 500$

And a little pension, but nothing big.
